I'm very surprised this band is not on the archives. When I first got into Dream Theater and discovered prog..they were the most recommended band besides Symphony X, Evergrey, Opeth, Queensryche and Fates Warning...huge bands.
I found them to be just as proggy and technical as the formention bands.
Anyway...this is a higly recommended band to fans of prog-metal and I hope they get added to the archives.
Anyone else a fan or have something to say about this awesome band?

Yeah I agree, Nevermore is amazing....This Godless Endeavor is their best IMO. They should be releasing a new album sometime next year.

This thread shouldn't be there, because the band are not in PA. Anyway, Nevermore were rejected by the Prog-Metal team.

^ Personally I can see a clear relation between Nevermore and Prog, but it's not enough to include them. Think of them as a brilliant Thrash/American Power Metal band with an outstanding vocalist and a real knack for writing really interesting and unusual (in a slightly avant/experimental sense) music.

They can be very technical and to my way of thinking progressive but I'n not sure that any more thrash type prog metal bands should be added just now unless its 100% clear they are prog metal seems like theres still some getting use to recent inclusions for some of us.

Band should be at least in Prog-realted list
eventhough I'd prefer to see them in progressive metal list
I think progressive elements will get stronger with every album... so probably it's a question of an album or two, sooner or later will see them in the list

I'm a huge nevermore fan(even if the W.Dane is a bit too much some times), that band is amazing!
And I can see why you ask why they're not in the progressive metal genre? Because for me they should be.
They are more prog than Death for, I take Death in comparison cause
everybody will agree that they're prog but they are more prog than
plenty of bands in the category, at least that's my point of view!

i lie if i say im a big fan, but they have they moments. over all its a
trash band with a really weird vocal, he doesn't sound like any thrash
vocal i know.

the last death album "the sound of perseverance" had allot of really interesting technical elements, and thats why death should be here under the teach genre. never more prog, why? give me one reason for it to be prog.

W.Dane used to be an opera singer, I was told, very powerful voice anyway.
I agree about the sound of perseverance, my favourite death album with symbolic.
Now why is Nevermore prog? _their use of acoustic and electric guitars in the same songs. _their creativity _their virtuosity _rythm changes, very well arranged melodies, work on harmony _they use a typical prog structure for some of their songs(the learning, this godless endeavour)with an intro, then appearance of the main theme, then many rythmic different sections, main theme, outro.
It's not their main characteristics tough, but hey it's a metal band! well progessive metal it is! less prog than opeth of course but as prog as maiden and death sure!!!!
|
Posted By: bluesynight

ok...
"their use of acoustic and electric guitars in the same songs"... so is maiden, so what? and maiden is only in prog related, so its not prog.
"their creativity"... you need to be more specific.
their virtuosity.. it doesn't make it prog, joe satriani is all so virtuous and his not here, and nether is hendrix.
rhythm...maybe, i didnt listing to them enough to judge this part, but from what i heard..no.
"very well arranged melodies, work on harmony"...harmony, well no they work on melodic structure, there are here and there some harmonies, but in flames have them to. its mostly melodic.
its a good band, but its not prog.
ps opeth is here only for their technical elements, beside that they just a melodic death. and thats why they in the ../subgenre.asp?style=43 - Tech/Extreme Prog Metal section, and not in the prog metal section.

^ In Flames is also a good example of a band which plays highly technical/virtuosic music but stays away from prog at the same time. Nevermore are prog related IMO, but not enough for me to insist for them to be added.

On a related side note....has anybody here heard Warrel Dane's first solo album Praises to the War Machine? It's extremely good.

i agree, although there is some work on harmony on sorrowed man for exemple? Welll of one song
BUT they're not even in the prog related section!!!!!!!!
they should be add!! in the same category as opeth even i don't agree
with you concerning them they're are more than just technical, have you
listened to damanation(not that technical actually), deliverance??, or
songs like a fair judgement, the first two albums... In my opinion opeth are more prog along with other metal bands like the old dead tree than what I saw in the progressive metal section, for exemple KAMELOT (are you serious??)or symphony X. Of course some of their releases are clearly oriented death metal but some of dream theatre albums has nothing prog (their first)or very little images and world(though exellent, well it's sometimes prog thinkin it again) or falling into infinity. This is very subjective anyway

I always thought of them as good power metal, nothing much more.
However, I do admit that I haven't listened to a whole album from them. I just got kindof bored after awhile. The music tends to kind of run together for me, and it all sounds pretty much the same. It isn't unique enough to be considered 'progressive", at least not in my mind.

its not about being unique, its about having prog elements, they dont have them. and beside power they have also some really interesting trash and melodic death elements. and a really interesting vocal. i said it before and i say it again, good band, but not prog.

You're contradicting yourself. "progressive" = "unique". To have prog elements, one must have enough originality to make it to the archives. Otherwise this site would be overrun with hundreds of same-sounding Dream Theater clones. To be progressive doesn't mean your band has keyboards, a super-fast guitar player and an operratic singer.
Having said that, I do admit that Nevermore is good at what they do, but what they do has been done before, therefore they are not on here.

The PMT rejected Nevermore long ago,and since then I personally have no reason to change my vote from no to yes.
Adding them under Prog Related is out of the question.

this godless endeveaour??? NERVEMORE is NOT a power metal band, the rythmic section is much of the time power metal and when I say power metal I mean American power metal(pantera) but that's all!! by the way I proved there are prog elements in their music they do what have been done before, could you tell me which band did that before? I also have another question : why are Kamelot and symphony in the progressive metal section? They are not unique at all ! symphony x is made of neo classique virtuosity ok, so you should add jason becker. Kamelot, poor music, it's commercial gothic, not more I saw them live, the poorest performance of the graspop 2005, within temptation was far better lol
but i give up my idea ok!

A little heads up...not all of the prog metal bands here were added by us.
The owner of this site added quite a few of them, and if he wanted Kamelot or Symphony X here,so be it.

^ This is true. The site owners have the final, final say, and sometimes bands that deserve to be here are pushed aside in favor of more lackluster bands. Why is this? Because the site owners themselves call the shots, and what THEY consider prog is what is ultimately included.
I can understand the argument, but I do not agree with it. I have never thought of Nevermore as a prog metal act. Hell, let's unclude Dragon Force and the like while we're at it. You have to draw the line somewhere. Symphony X is progessive in my opinion, Nevermore is not. The examples you used are fine, but obviousely these other bands were cleared for inclusion ages ago. To debate them now just to make a point isn't going to help your band's cause.
Perhaps Prog-Related would be a good place for some of these other bands, but for whatever reason, Nevermore was voted down there as well, so there you have it. Not even prog enough to be considered related to the genre in any fashion. That sounds pretty final, to me.

no its all technical, you need to be "more then metal to be prog". for example symp x...they use allot of shred, they highly influenced by classical, they use symphonic elements. concept albums and highly intelligent lyrics(POWER METAL).
Modern Progressive Power Metal (American Style) In
a way these bands revived the music which had sparked the Progressive
Metal movement in the 1980s. In the meantime the musical environment
had changed a lot, for example neo-classical elements had been made
popular by one Yngwie J. Malmsteen. This was influential for most
Progressive Metal bands which were rooted in power metal.
The
following bands can largely be attributed to American Power Metal,
although some are borderline to the Eclectic/Mainstream Progressive
Metal bands. |
and how many DT clones you know? maybe sun caged remind me the old DT, but i can think about any one else.
