I have been enjoying these two records so much this week, and was thinking how hard it would be to pick one over the other. So i'll let the experts decide which one is better. GENTLE GIANT vs. VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR.

This is a hard choice. Objectively, these albums are both very good but since I adore Hammill's vocals I am choosing "Still Life".

Gentle Giant for me as ''Still life'' a good album has the horrible ''la rossa'' and leave  a taste of sameness at the end

Both very good albums, The Power And The Glory just ahead this time.

The sameness i can agree with. IT has been with the band since "The least we can do.." to a certain extent, but... do you really think La Rossa is a bad track? Wow, i have always seen it as... well, i was gonnas ay top 5 on the album, but top five of all of VDGG, at least! :)

Gentle Giant -The Power And The Glory

Not a difficult choice for me.

The Power And The Glory is a good album, no doubt about it, but it is not even my favourite album by Gentle Giant, which, in turn, despite being an extraordinary group, is not placed amongst my very favourite ones.

On the other hand, Still Life by Van der Graaf Generator... The only album which can compete with Still Life (in my list, obviously) is Godbluff...

Both, please! Smile

What's up with this never-ending mania for pitting albums and bands "against" each other here? How unnatural! Why would I ever have to choose? Confused

If I select one to listen to now, I can play the other the next time, can't I? Stern%20Smile

That's the thing with art -- you're allowed to like two or more dissimilar things equally well....

"Experts?" LOL "That's right, girls -- I'm a certified Gentle Giant expert and registered Van der Graaf Generator consultant." Geek

(I thought we were just called fans.) Ermm

I'll stop now -- but these frankly pointless "X vs Y" polls irk me, and seem to be getting ever more numerous.

No offense. Two great prog albums -- I applaud your good taste! Smile

'Still Life'. I really like 'The Power and the Glory' but I love 'Still Life'.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Power & the Glory.

One of the finest GG albums! Still Life is excellent as well, but I don't think it's VDGG's best. If this was a "Pawn Hearts vs. Power & the Glory" poll instead, It would have been MUCH more difficult for me.

Absolutely right Peter. I was going to say both.

Wow.  La Rossa is one of my two favorite songs off of the album, the other being Childlike Faith, and one of my top ten favorite VDGG songs.  Those two songs really make the album for me.  The other three are good, but La Rossa and Childlike Faith stand far above the other three IMO.

I also love The Power and the Glory, one of my favorite GG albums.  Hard choice, but in the end I must go with TPATG as I think it's a bit more of a consistently great album from start to finish.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Both bands and both albums are blameless and irreproachable, just like all good Prog.

IT's very sad that I didn't listen to either of these bands. VDGG looks so interesting though.

Is are Gentle Giant not good, so Still Life is me for

Still Life, no competition really. VdGG and GG are my two favourite Prog bands, but in this case VdGG is the clear winner. That said, The Power and The Glory is a really good album.

I personally think Still life is VDGG best output, while the Power and the glory, although excellent, is not a masterpiece as Still life is.

I don't see Still Life and Power and the Glory on the same level. GG is way better if you ask me.

Both have great music on them. I choose Still Life, and that's purely a matter of taste which I cannot defend.

Have yet to listen to Van Der Graff, so Power and the Glory wins by default.

Havn't heard the entire Still Life, but for me it's a tie.

I voted Still Life, I found too much of Power and Glory to be a Yes and Jethro Tull clone
