Despite most of Canada being a backwater for the world's media coverage; I wonder if any of you have any thoughts on the commission charged with studying what Quebecers would accept as being reasonable when accomodating new immigrants. One of the more "interesting" propositions, advanced by the new Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois is that immigrants would need to meet certain french language comprehension levels to be able to fully participate in the democratic process - i.e. to vote, to run for election, to be a member of any government commission etc.

So far, it seems that the more remote the area of the province, the more uptight Quebecers are about newcomers. One childish public firestorm was ignited over the fact that a muslim group rented a "cabane a sucre" (maple sugar camp) & asked that no pork be on-site during their event. The supposed insult being that beans & pork are a staple of the Quebec traditional potluck meals at these sites.

haha, if you call that a firestorm then you ougtta come to the states and ask that Merry CHRISTmas be changed to Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings...as I am often told by religous folk - "In the US we believe in freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion.Ouch
