Trying to get into them, haven't heard a single thing so which album would you suggest getting that describes them as a band musically? Oh, and are they progressive at all? I heard they were sort of generic metalish, but I really haven't a clue as to what they sound like.

the best, by some margin are:

Rage For Order 4/5
Operation Mindcrime 5/5
Empire 4.5/5
Promised Land 4.5/5

I wouldn't bother with the rest....Wink

Queensryche are kind of a proto-prog metal band.  They are sometimes credited as being the first progressive metal band and their main influences seem to be Rush and Pink Floyd.

Operation: Mindcrime is their best known album.  It is also a concept album with a really good story.  If you like Mindcrime, then you would probably like their follow-up Operation: Mindcrime II, which was released in 2006, and is a sequel to the original story.  This is my currently most frequently played album.

Promise Land is considered to be their "proggiest" album and might be a good starting point also.  I think that Melomaniac's above list is a pretty good ranking system.  I actually like Hear in the Now Frontier and Q2K, but they aren't essential listening.

Empire is also a really good album.  It contains the ballad "Silent Lucidity", which at the time that it came out people thought that it was Pink Floyd song.  Personally, I hear some Pink Floyd influence, but never thought it was a Pink Floyd song.

I think their best album is easily Operation:Mind-Crime, but it's not very progressive. I'd make this recommendation:

Non-Prog/Prog-Related:

- Operation: Mind-Crime
- Empire

Prog:

- Promised Land
- The Warning

T, it was probably incorrectly placed here by the topic starter.  Do you have the special super powers required to move it with your new title?

I may get burned for this, but I actually enjoy Hear in the Now Frontier and Q2K. Still listen to them frequently.

After hearing O:M, Empire, and Promised Land, I think Queensryche are only somewhat prog metal, but still a very good band. All are about equally good in different ways. About 4 stars all around.

This should be moved to one of the Prog Lounges... Queensryche have been in PA for ages!

Anyway, I love the band (prog or not), and my favourite albums are Rage for Order and Operation: Mindcrime. Empire and Promised Land are also very good.

Operation Mindcrime and Rage for Order are very good albums, Empire is rather good but not overly memorable (too much of a polished, radio friendly feel to it IMO). OMII is just plain terrible, I just cant sit through the whole thing.

Queenryche, good music even if not always progressive.
Operation:Mindcrime is a classic on its own right, Promised Land  and Empire are good albums, too.

Warning, Rage for Order, O:M, Empire and Promised land are all good albums (with Empire as the most commercial of the 5). One curiousity on Rage for Order is the cover of Dalbello's song "close to you".

Love Operatin Mindcrime (though OM II is patchy) and Empire. Rage for Order is also pretty good and i can even find stuff to enjoy on The Warning.
