Sometime in the past (maybe recently), a famous 18yr old actress working for Disney took a 'naturist-style'  nude picture of herself for private reasons. Someone apparently stole the pic and leaked it over the net, and some of the reactions really shock me. It's as if the poor girl has to be ashamed of herself for taking a nude picture of herself and some even saying that they will forbid their daughters to watch her performances due to that picture. Out of curiosity I checked it out and yea, it's the typical non-sexual naturist pic. It's none of their business and it's not her fault it got leaked, it's the leaker ... duh!

Why are so many Americans so ashamed of the human body? Why do parents prefer to show their kid a rated R violent thriller or terror movie rather than a much cleaner movie which happens to have a scene where you see a woman's breasts? Why  is this naked picture bigger news than important science/politics news around?

"Good job son, you decapitated that guy with the axe. You're good at this game! oh wait, is that a nipple? turn this garbage off and don't play it again"

Slightly off topic: Sexuality. Why do parents try to protect their children to know about sexual education? They're going to learn eventually anyways, and it's better to teach it in school or in a family discussion rather than the kids learning in a very wrong way: (internet pornography, etc)

Would the country be better with no political correctness or the level we have now?  I personally don't like PC but it sure deters a lot of trouble.  People need to relax but the problem is where do you set the line?  If we say the picture was no big deal, then the next one is a little worse and so on before there are no boundaries.  It just isn't black and white and the religious people and the people who don't want anyone to ever be offended are going to have their say to the point where people just want them to shutup or go away so they give in.

If Disney does nothing, this should blow over.  But will they be able to weather the storm?  I hate that crap they put out but I have no beef with the girl and I am sure she is mortified with this and I feel bad for her.  But then again, maybe it was a publicity stunt.  Worse things have occurred.

I think you are mixing political correctness with social repression. The religious right in the U.S. is in general so blatantly contradictory it is hard to ever see tham embracing any sense of logic.  I find it amusing that people who find themselves on a higher moral ground because of an alledged spiritual awareness become so deeply distraught over the human physical form.

And "slippery slope" is a logical fallacy.  Artistic nude photos/paintings leading to hardcore pornagraphy is no more likely than choosing a firm matress over a pillow top will eventually lead to sleeping on a bed of nails.

It's a bit odd that they made a huge fuss over Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" but are happy to send TV programs like Sexcetera over here, however I'm sure we have the same double standards as well.

oh yippie... nothing like jumping up on the soap-box after a hard days work hahhaha

that sums it up....  Just blame it, as I do, on the lunutic right and their damn evangelicalism.  It's ok to decry sin and immorality for others.... but who is it that often gets caught with their pants down.

This country has always .... from day one ... had a purianical streak.  Not to mention a healthy dose of hypocrisy.  It's fine to say what others can and can't do... as long as it doesn't apply.. or affect them.  Sex .. of all forms is natural... and nothing is more natural than the human body.  Lord knows though.... I'll be the last person you'll see prancing around town in the buff.  I'd get laughed out of town... but I don't understand what  people's hang-ups are with sex.

oh well.

It's when it gets nastier and sadistic, like the rape scene in A Clockwork Orange, for instance.

There's a time and a place for sex in films.

And it should never involve Billy Bob Thornton. Didn't care for Monsters Ball in the first place, but he really didn't help.

The US is sexually retarded. I don't know if it's totally religions' fault, but I can't think of any other culprit now. Sex that is demeaning to any participant should be kept private from the general public, but still avaliable. And child porn and beastiality should definitely be outlawed, but other than that, no one should tell you what you can't do with another person sexually. As long as everyone's happy, go for it.

Nudity is the most natural state of being. The human body is to be admired, not shunned, unless in such cases when it is grotesque to look at (morbidly obesce, etc).

but yes, Americans, the first ones that is, were Puritans, which would be a fitting start to the nation

there are many contries (essentially all of them), with better sensibilities in the matter (to name a few the UK, and Japan)

because since nudity is so taboo in america, the ultimate counter-culture way of protest, and easy was to shock and disgust in america is nudity (anyone remember janet jackson circa the superbowl a few years ago?, I thought it would be the LA Riots all over again). Without people having it, it is in to display nudity and sexuality (despite the fact many of these so called protesters do it in a very blatant, untasteful manner)

I never said it was, David.  I was just using it as an example of the way sex shouldn't be portrayed in films.

I doubt it would have got through the censors at all in the US.  It eventually got banned over here though.

there's this somewhat pointlessly rebellious, hedonistic streak in americans.

the funny thing about the repression left is that though gay marraige is a hot-button topic in elections, it emits this awkward silence that just flows over the room whenever it's mentionedTongue

Americans are prudes. Sex is a natural thing. I attribute much of it to religious teachings of the past/present. The Bible, in the old testament Garden of Eden tale, says to us that nakedness is shameful. Why? If were weren't supposed to be naked, then why are we born that way? Confused

There is a huge difference between nudity and pornography. Unfortunately there is a vocal minority who cannot make that distinction and their over-reaction leaves you wondering if it is their own morality they are protesting about.

The worst thing of all is that sex drive is so repressed that it always escapes in violent and intense bursts at like parties and other things like that. The inhibition of sex just leads to a general hypersexuality in rebellion, well not even in rebellion, more like "because it's fun and naughty." It's a forbidden fruit, and we Americans eat as much of it as possible.

I can attest to the first post. When I grew up, my parents forbade me from seeing PG-13 movies with sexuality but I could watch full R movies like Terminator and Predator (I was a big Arnold fan back before acting ability factored into my criteria Wink). Looking back, it would have been no big deal to see sexuality or even R-rated nudity. It is far more harmful to a child repressing the human body and endlessly discussing it on the news than just seeing some nudity.

Basically, yeah.
I've always found stuff like that funny. But that's more of a religon-centered sexual oppression, and that could be the worst of all if the person doesn't truly feel it.

If the media reports and hypes up the story of an actress being nude it allows them to do less actual work and keeps them from reporting on the truth in various fields of the world...government, etc.  You know the story.

..and this is what is wrong with mankind. It's not just an American affliction. Violence is completly acceptable, but sex is frowned upon. Violence is now entertainment. We can sit watching the tea time news, watching images of people shot to ribbons in war zones, dead children being loaded onto trucks in Baghdad and we think 'ooh, it's terrible isn't it' But, if we saw a pair of knockers and a ladies front garden on South Today, the BBC's switchboard would light up like a Christmas tree, and the proles would be writing to the MP's in disgust.

It's a funny old world. Perhaps if our social evolution takes us to a place where violence is actually deemed unacceptable, there would be less killing in the world. People would then have more time for sh&gging!

What's in a name?
Face on a stage
Where are you now?
Memory fades, you take a bow

Here in the dark
Watching the screen
Look at them fall
The final scene

And we go doot
Doot doot

Look at them fall
Flicker and fade
Gone are the screams
I put them to bed, now they are dreams

And we go doot
Doot doot

Be proud, then, that your liberties here at PA aren't going the same way there are in the 'States!Confused

(I am an American, by the way).

As for nudity in the 'States, it's not really quite that way. Americans are puritanical in every respect, and everything is a vice. So the youth (12-25) go and indulge themselves until they run out of cash and decide their lives are sh*t, at which point they become the next generation of the self-loathing Religious Right.

http://www.lyricsdomain.com/19/sparks/tits.html - Tits    http://www.lyricsdomain.com/19/sparks/ - Sparks

(Ron Mael)

Harry, it's good of you to stay
Hear every word I say
And not just duck away

God, these drinks are something warm and watered down
Barkeep, how 'bout some ice
Hey, Harry sit back down
Say, that little thing there's fine from behind

They all look good after three or four,
So drink Harry, drink Harry,
Drink 'til you can't see no more
of anything, no more of anything
Drink Harry, drink Harry, drink 'til you can't see no more

For months, for years,
Tits were once a source of fun and games at home
And now she says, tits are only there to feed our little Joe
So that he'll grow

Harry, it's really rough at home
I've caught her on the phone
Hey, who's that on the phone?
Oh, that's no one dear,
The standard sort of line
Harry, you know me well,
You know that I'm not blind
Hey, you ain't been drinking
Don't you know I'm buying?

They all taste good after three or four
So drink Harry, drink Harry, drink 'til you can't drink no more
of anything, no more of anything
Drink Harry, drink 'til you can't drink no more

How well I know
Tits were only there for fun and games at home
And now she says, tits are only there to feed our little Joe
So that he'll grow

God, the room is spinning round
Hey, drive me home old pal
God, you sure get around
Harry, I know it's you who's breaking up my home
Harry, don't say a word, just drop me off at home
Harry, forgive me Harry, let's have just one more

It's all so good after three or four
It's all so good after three or four
It's all so good after three or four

So let's drink Harry, drink 'til we can't drink no more
of anything, no more of anything
Drink Harry, drink Harry, drink 'til we can't drink no more

How well I know
Tits were once a source of fun and games at home
And now she says, tits are only there to feed our little Joe
So that he'll grow into a man

So let's drink Harry, drink 'til we can't see no more, etc

I don't drink and I graduated co-valedictorian, to refute your slanderous accusations, and I still have no idea what you're talking about. Re the link to their song, that was not mine, of course (mine appeared above that). My link was for a much older, funnier, better-sung song. I get a real kick out of the ditty, especially the "yip yip yip yip um mum mum mum" vocals, and I love the dancing audience members.

Nudity, (he typed, trying to steer this thread back in the direction of "on topic").

Living in the Netherlands, it never ceases to amaze me just how hung up the US gets about it. Here, virtually anything goes. It's nothing to walk through Amsterdam and see a bill board poster or advertisement, featuring full frontal nudity, male and female, and you know what? No one gives a sh*t! They've been that way since the 60s and Dutch society has yet to slide into a cesspit of Sodom and Gomorrah style iniquity. In fact, the Calvinistic Cloggies are some of the most inexcitable, level headed, and broad minded people I've ever encountered.
Can't those Bible Belt prudes see? Making a fuss about nudity is what makes it shocking. Whole tribes in Africa and South America walk around stark bollock naked and no one bats an eyelid. Why aren't they all raping each other every minute of the day, or hiding behind the nearest bush? Because no one told them that sex , nudity and shame are inexorably linked, that's why.  Of course, Christian missionaries and their misguided "soul saving" have tried to scupper this 'at one with nature' life style through the centuries. As said tribes are also descended from Adam and Eve, why didn't they inherit the biblical "shame" as described in Genesis? Strange, that .

n00bs, it takes like a 2 second google search to fing who the actress was, and 5 more seconds to find the actual pic

It actually made ma hate High School Musical a little less... no just kidding

Really big deal... there are hotter porn stars of the same age out there with many better pictures. Now people bitching about how terrible this pic is, but digging in their browser history will show a different story entirely Media is a business and scandals pay off well.

^ well, that scene is really not very offensive ... but there are some movies which contain hard pornography and are considered to be of artistic value which seems to allow them to be broadcast on TV ... at least in Germany. The most popular of them are http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256103/ - Intimacy and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0194314/ - Romance .

interesting comment about the attitude to nudity in the Netherlands - being British i come from a culture where people went to a lot of trouble to change out of their swimming costumes modestly on the crowded beach, using three hands and a towel - it must have been excruciating to witness .....

During a holiday in Austria some years ago we visited a heated indoor/outdoor swimming pool set in the mountains and snow, there were no  seperate changing rooms, but mixed, and people were walking around totally starkers without a care - except the English couple still struggling with their towels in the corner! Embarrassed
