Let's say you could add one person to any prog band. Not take away a member at all or create a new one. Who would you add to what band, and why?

I would find it very interesting to have Gabriel not rejoin Genesis, but to join King Crimson as there line up is now. Why? Listen to "The Power to Believe" and "Up." Both are full of effects, complicated songs, a very dense sound with a dark feel. I think the combination of the two super powers combining together would work beautifully!  I think in certain cases, there is a certain emotion in Apathetic instrumentals that Crimson has nailed, that Gabriel lacks. Plus, imagine up with terrific skill and complicated layering that King Crimson has placed in "Up". I think it'd work great!

Also, as beautiful as "The Power to Believe" was, you can't deny it wasn't the most melodic album, which Gabriel is a master of. Although TPtB was magnificent, I think some of Gabriel's melodies and emotion he puts into his writing can work great! All in all, I think the addition would result in a masterpiece.

Ian McDonald on sax, electric piano, and mellotron on the next Tool album. It would be unlike anything we would ever be able to imagine. Just think if they covered Moonchild.

Ian Anderson into any band ever. There is no band that cannot be improved by the Minstrel.

Yeah Whistler, you seemed to forget that it is Jean you are talking to.  GonG has to get mentioned.

Uh oh...why do I have the sudden feeling like no one is going to leave this thread alive?

Well, in all truth, I must say I haven't heard Gong yet. But I DO know that Ian's flute kicks all other flute ass to hell that I've heard so far.

Well, I'm listening to Minstrel in the Gallery, so I'll have to disagree on both counts, but...like I said. Gong has always sounded intruiging (sic?) to me anyways, so if you don't mind highjacking the thread for a minute, any suggestions for a poor Tuller like me?

listen to the Mother Gong album "Fairy Tales" and you will get blown away by Didier Malherbe and forget about Ian Anderson. take my word for it. mark that it is not Gong but Mother Gong. in my opinion the masterpiece of Didier Malherbe; my sister (who plays flute herself) was really fascinated by that album

Well, I somehow doubt that, but I want to get into Gong, not nessecarily be blown away by some fascinating flute playing. Shouldn't I start with something a little more classical...or available at Amazon-able?

that Mother Gong album IS classical, in my opinion. but if you want to start with Gong, buy "You". fantastic drumming by Pierre Moerlen; he was never again as good as on that album, and he was always extremely good

Aha! That one seems more likely, and shall enter that long list of albums I promise myself I'll buy but never seem to.

And, I understand that Ian's flute is a leetle hard to get into, but give the poor lad a chance; he sneezed into that thing so that the children...might live.

To add on to the off-topicness, I recently ordered Gong's Camembert Electrique album.  For some reason, it's cheaper as a new reissue LP than as a new CD, go figure.  Anyway, considering how much I love Radio Gnome-era Gong, it's surprising how long I waited to purchase this.

I know Ian Anderson very well, so I don't have to get into him; actually I knew him before Didier Malherbe. Ian can't shine a candle to Didier

One thing KC was always about was pushing the limits of music, and it's been a while since they've been particularly melodic. So I think Fripp might be open too a little messin around! And he'd have more opportunities with Gabriel since he's just a tad bit more talented as a vocalist.Wink

Plus, look at Gabriel's singing on "Darkness", he can pull off a heavier sound if he wanted too . And I doubt Gabriel would focus completely on vocal melodic parts, he;d no doubt had something to say regarding the instrumental breaks.

IDK, I think it'd be great. Even just for one album.

Thanks to Luc Pilmeyer I can pass on the happy news that Didier Malherbe and the Hadouk Trio have received a prestigious music award in France, the 'Victoire du Jazz' as http://www.lesvictoires.com/Victoires/jazz/laureats.html - 'Artists of the Year' , the ceremony was also broadcast on the FR3 TV channel.

Looks as if Didier is about to try and get a tune out of the award - he probably could.

This isn't exactly the question you asked, but I would like to see a collaboration between Brian May and Ronnie James Dio. It would be better than Rainbow!

I would add Frank Zappa to Pink Floyd. He would lend them a much-needed sense of humor. (Can you imagine "When the Tigers Broke Free" combined with "Drafted Again"? The ultimate anti-war song).

I think of Pink Floyd's earlier stuff, and it seems more surreal than funny to me. And much of the latter (Rogers-dominated) stuff is just existentialist melancholy incarnate.

That actually happened.  Zappa jammed along with Interstellar Overdrive in a show somewhere.  I used to have a recording of it, but it was of such low sound quality that I got rid of it.

Jimi Hendrix to Emerson Lake and Palmer so that they could be HELP.  I'm not sure if the rumors that this might actual have happened were fact or fiction but I think it would certainly have made for an interesting collaboration.
