Subject: A question about the intarwebs...

I was listening to a album I made for myself the other day; it was part of a free giveaway: buy Rupi's Dance by date X, go to j-tull.com, punch in..."the code," and boom! Two live tracks and three phone messages are yours to download. I jokingly thought to myself about reviewing them...

But then I thought, "Wait a second...in a world where music online has become almost important, does it have a place at the archives? Some bands giveaway whole albums online, and Myspace governs music to a certain, limited degree. Does the archives reflect this? Can interenet music be addressed here? Does it need to? Does it already and I'm just to lazy to check?!?"

So, is there a way that this aspect of modern music can be represented, is it under consideration, is it a new point, or are we gonna ignore it?

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Are you saying that PA should be giving away albums online?
We have an unsigned bands section where bands can post their Myspace links.

There is also a thread about free legal downloads.

I mean if something is released JUST online, can we accomodate it, and would we even want to?

I think that at some point, we should. I believe more and more bands will go looking for different media, not in the least because of the situation with current CD sales. If that happens, they will still be releasing tracks, and maybe also albums, which deserve to be reviewed and discussed here under the same conditions (definitions and genres) as vinyl and CDs. A change of medium does not make an 'album' less of an 'album'.

That's the spirit - know they are there, but don't recognise them as being different. Thumbs%20Up

I don't see what difference it makes if a recording is only released online. We can add it and review it the same as a normal CD.

That makes two of us then, and 2.5 if we take into account Tony and his memory leak. Wink

Hey, more like 3.68 my friend! I've seen how some more "underground" artists these days have created a little career for themselves usuing only, say, myspace. I'm all about that sorta thing (after all, I run one).

I remember many people saying that Wobbler's two unreleased tracks, present on their website, were better than their debut "Hinterland". The band realized this and announced their release on an EP due this year, although nothing is heard on that matter since November last year...

Trying to answer to the Whistler, I don't see a major change coming with the introduction of web-tracks in, say, the artist's profile. Like bhikkhu pointed out, we have already an extensive thread on free legal downloads (although it could do with some links). Plus, someone interested in a band here on archives has always the official website to click.

About your case, I assume those tracks on J-Tull.Com are not accessible to all. But I don't see how they could merit an inclusion on their own. If you enjoy them, and would like to review them, you probably should, but not on their own - if you were granted access to them via purchasing "Rupi's Dance", then you could describe them (if you want to) in that album's review.

As for MySpace bands, we have seen them being added on two conditions: first, if they are prog; second, if they make the album(s) available for free download, even if they never had any "material" launch.

I'm not sure I gave you the answer you were searching or contribuited much to the discussion. But I do remember a nice review written for an album added to the Fripp discography that consisted of the 4-sec Windows Vista opening theme, which was eventualy deleted (not sure if it was kept somewhere in the forum archives - it really should). LOL

What? I put on a little weight over the summer...

Kotro: Nah, I was pretty much kidding about that; wouldn't be too helpful either, seeing as how the free download offer should have expired now (although I could do a "lookit what I got!" sorta deal).

And I heard of that Windows thing...God Fripp has some dedicated fans.
