I've been listening to a lot of Holdsworth, Ohm:, Planet X and Brand X lately. The guitar in these bands seems to be all over the place but I know thats its no randomness.
Are they just playing in a unchanging key signature? Is the bassist playing some progressions changing the chords while the guitar solos over it in the appropriate modes? How exactly does this writing and playing get done? |

Here's my general approach to it: you'll need a theme/melody to give the song some level of coherence. You'll also need a solid chord progression to improvise over constantly (I love intense fusion improv!) Also, you may want to add some fast unison passages to serve as bridges. If nothing else, have a solid bassline under all the chaos and at least one melody to play every 24 bars or whatever. It's okay to have a song that is 80% soloing, but you've got to keep it within some sort of structure. Hope this helped! ------------- for those about to prog, we salute you. |

| also avoid any striaght major or minor chords, a real simple way to make your chords sound more fusionesque is to forget about modal coherence and make your chords minor 9ths, diminished 7ths, or major 7ths. dominant 7ths sound good too if you take out the 5th. hope that helps! |
