Black Sabbath by a mile. Deep Purple is one of those bands I could never get into.

first 5...wow...hmmm

Sabbath's best by most accounts...and Purples generally least known,  (and appreciated)

Deep Purple for me...  love their 'prog' period when Lord called the shots.. not Blackmore.

Both bands are great, but Deep Purple gets my vote, love their "prog related" period when Blackmore called the shots
The early albums were great too

I find myself listening to Deep Purple a lot more than Black Sabbath, though both were important in the development of prog.

Black Sabbath by some way, for me...

Though I'm not really a major fan of any of these two bands, I kind of like their early outputs. And while I consider Deep Purple's output quite varied and influential, I tend to prefer Black Sabbath [and also consider their albums to be more consistent].

Easy poll this one, Purple by a million miles. No comparison in my book, though, funnily enough, I prefer Iommi to Blackmore! LOL

Sabbath all the way !! LOL

I listened to both bands today which is kind of strange. but I vote Sabbath.   Deep Purple's first 5 are good and all, but Sabbath's are incredible.  They had power in all instrumental departments.  That stuff will cut you and explode you at the same time.  Deep Purple lacks that kind of power.  MEGA POWER.

Tough call, but I have to go with Sabbath. They were great and hugely influential on EVERYBODY!

If you're basing it off the first 5 then Sabbath without a doubt. DP didn't start making an impact until their fourth, In Rock

Black Sabbath? The popularity of BS (and Ozzy in particular) amazes me, but I guess they are one of those bands whose fame (and infamy) is bigger in teh USA than in their homeland.

I prefer Purple, the music is more interesting to me.

Does anyone notice that a lot of Blackmoore's riffs are good for strip clubs?  His riffs are great, but he has that one style of riffage in several DP and Rainbow songs that have a strut walk kind of rhythm and they always make me think they could fit well in a strip club.  Not that I've ever been to one, but thats just the impression I get sometimes.  Anyways, I was just curious if anyone else got that impression.

Black Sabbath first 5 albums are all classic, especially Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Master of Reality and of course Paranoid. And i think they have aged better than Purple.

Black Sabbath for me.  Nothing against DP though, I just prefer Sabbath.

Sabbath upto and including Sabotage.I Never really got into Deep Purple big time.Liked some of their stuff but they never really 'did it' for me.
I preferred Iommi's guitar style/tone to Blackmore's.I got more interested in Deep Purple when Tommy Bolin joined, albeit breifly. That said.I do have a penchant for 'Burn'.

Woah, close shave here, I thought Purple would wipe the floor with it. Not that Sabbath aint great, but at their peak Purple are just that little bit more special.

and in Greece too...Wink
they are considered as the fathers of metal, which makes them probably
the most popular in the country (many metal maniacs in my homeland) Evil%20Smile
Deep Purple are big also, but not at the same level
(I admire Ritchie's riffs, his Rainbow ones are even more unique IMHO)

This one goes the other way round of the poll of Sabbath vs Purple this one I vote to Sabbath. Sabbath first 2 albums and Sabbath Bloody sabbath are amazing.

Evan's albums are not bad but they're not quite hard rock like gillan's albums or coverdale's.

Sabbath for me....

Can't understand what's so speciall from Evans/Simper era. I have their 3 albums and I really like BOT and DP but they don't reach non of Gillan or Coverdale's albums.

If I voted for Purple I would do it just for Fireball. Black Sabbath's debut and Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are fu**ing masterpices of hard rock. Deep Purple's BOT and DP are very good but not masterpieces. Only Fireball reaches that. And like my review of In Rock, In Rock will never take a place on my heart of hard rock.

Actually, unless my memory is totally shot (always a possibility) In Rock was the 5th DP album, after Shades, Taliesyn, DP (with the Bosch cover), and Concerto.

In any case, for me In Rock trumps all of Sabbath's first five.

it was the 5th Clap and Deep Purple hit it hard from the first album in early 68. If you want to measure impact by sales... and why not.. people can't listen if they ain't buying it.  Shades was ..what a top 20 or 30 album. Sure sales were driven by Hush..but  listen to that album... I'll be damned if that isn't heavy prog.  Not to mention Lord was right with Emerson in wanting to bring classical and rock together in those days before prog really became prog.

I'm most familiar with Mark II Deep Purple, which is simply an awesome line-up. Mark I and IV have some cool songs as well. Really, the only Sabbath I bother with is their first two albums, and sometimes the third.

So... I think I made a good decision on my vote.
