Long tracks, group composition and date of release (preferably the early 70's One thing I have learned throughout my long career of record buying is to check out the early albums first because later albums ........ are deceiving. ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

However, checking out the band line-ups and the music generated over for instance, Cuneiform Records last 60 releases (say CUNE 150 to 205), and you will discovered somebody /some people have experimented there already. |

I usually look at the track lengths, i know intellectually that this is
not a good indicator of quality, but I just can't help it

I usually go off the recommendations of other people.I never buy an album based on seeing the product on display. If you are talking from the point of view that of you have made the decision to buy something by the band already then I usually know what I want through recommmendation.I never buy anything new without listening to it first anyway,so I dont buy off the internet "on spec".

Back in the early seventies when I began collecting music it was more or less trial and error going by weirdness of album covers. These days ( and I don't only buy prog albums )I have to hear the music first. I'll take it to the listening post whether it's vinyl or CD. Also these days music tends to be a little more pricey both from the retailers and second hand shops. So for me gone are the days of buying albums for just 1 or 2 tracks. I just bought Ramstein's Reise Reise after seeing their video for Keinne Lust on the Quebec version of MTV Music Plus. I listened to a few of the other tracks and plunked down my 15 bucks which probably could have bought 3 or 4 used lps back in the seventies. So I voted for any others. I don't really care what the instrumentation is as long as I like it. |

I think from the choices you gave, it's the tracklengths. But the thing that really makes me buy an album is the vibe it gives me when I listen to it in the record store where I'm buying it. For instance when I first heard the full album of Riverside's Out of myself (I knew the song Loose Heart through Progarchives.com) I was astonished by the talent that I heard from the first instance the cd started and that same spark was there 5 songs further I think (some of) you know what I mean ------------- Interested in my reviews? I usually look at the whole package. Album covers, line up, how long
the tracks are (though I don't think a 25min song is always a good
thing). Also, I read a few reviews about the album before buying it
just to make sure it is worth buying. That's why this is such a great
place! I've found so many great bands from here.

I found some interesting bands just by their cover. I found Pendragon's window of life in a record store, and the cover appealed to me, then I looked at the track lengths, 6 songs in just under the hour, 1 song of 14:40. I never heard of the band, or any of the band-players till then, I listened it in the record-store, already intending to buy it. it helped the sales lady said the music was somewhat similar to Marillion's. Same goes for my first Arena album, I saw the cover of Pride, then saw on the back the names Pointer/Nolan as writters, and the length of the songs, I emmediatly knew I wanted that album Those were two very impulsive purchases that I thank God for every day, two of the best albums in my collection ------------- I'm always almost unlucky _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Id5ZcnjXSZaSMFMC Id5LM2q2jfqz3YxT |

Line up - keyboardist, or even better, organist Track titles - Sometimes things just attract me Gender - I just don't like female vocalists.. I'm trying to broaden my horizons but ideally speaking it'd be a guy on vocals - also for there to be at least one hottie in the band. Release date - 1967-1975 ! Nationality - British. I buy other stuff but all of my favourites are British. ------------- Stop me from dreaming? Okay :-( |

Long songs can be a big clue to musical credability, although sometimes not. Exhibit C:
Although you may be intrigued by a 13 minute opus, one should never make the mistake of purchasing this album. The answer is always do your research via the internet with such great tools as Prog Archives. The days of making the above mistakes can be easily avoided by aid of today's technology.

I have to say how I buy albums from new bands is based on what the general public says. If it is highly condoned then I will give it a shot. Vice Versa as well. -------------

Of Couse now that the web exists. I think most of the people were referring to the pre web days and even more likely of the vinyl days. Record hunting was never an exact science and mistakes were frequent, but second hand shops were numerous and I bought a used record inToronto for $3 to 5 at one shop and would discard what I did not like to another for about that same price or slightly lower. My vynil record collection was build between 1975 and 1990, most of the titles I bought were either previously heared or from bands/artist well known by me. Ocassionally, I take chances, so that's why I have a record of a band call Angel, a very infamous one. But also stump over gems like Nude, or Fugazi. ------------- Please forgive me for my crappy english! |

You just hit on the one group where this long track thing is probably best avoided.Flower Kings seem to make long tracks for the sake of making long tracks. They just water down the soup to make it last longer.
