So, we all have our prog heroes but, what if you could make a fantasy prog band, who would you pick? We need a Singer, Guitarist (or two), Keys man (synths, mellotron, hammond), bass, drums/precussion. But if you want to add flute, sax etc, its all good! Let the debate commence!

Vocals: Gildenglow
Guitars: Petrucci, or Paul Gilbert
Bass: Chancellor from Tool
Drums: Portnoy. I just love him.
Keyboards: Neal Morse. He is great with keyboards, but I think he is one of the best composers out there, that's why I add him.

This is just one of my setups and I have a lot more in my mind.

What we need, I think, is a souped-up version of the Bruford-Levin Band:

Bill Bruford: drums
Tony Levin: bass
David Torn or even Robert Fripp: guitar
(with guest appearances by Steve Hackett, Steve Howe and/or Allan Holdsworth)
Andy Tillison: keyboards
(with guest appearances by Patrick Moraz, Django Bates and Dave Stewart)
Jon Anderson (?), Kevin Ayers (!), Annette Peacock (!!), Bryan Ferry (?!): vocals

P.S. Let the musicians write and play ALL the music they want to play, and ONLY if they really feel like playing.

P.P.S. Additional guest stars on sax, violin (or even viola, Geoff!) and marimba would be a plus!

Gabriel            vox/flute/keys                                         Steven Wilson or Moraz

Funny how almost every newie does this threads... hey, I have done them too when I first came

mmm the choice for today...

Prog metal

Maynard Keenan (Tool)- vocals
Fredik Thordendal (Meshuggah) - guitars
Finn Zierler (Beyond Twilight) - piano and keyboards
Morten Agren (Kaipa, Thordendal´s Special Defects) - drums
Sean Malone (Cynic) - fretless bass

It would be a very technichal rhythmic band, with some good dark piano melodies and an emotional touch thanks to Keenan´s singing

Vocals - Peter Hammill. Guitar- Dave Gilmour with Alan Holdsworth. Hammond- Jon Lord. Bass- Geddy Lee. Drums - Mike Portnoy. Ian Anderson- Flute. Dave Jackson on sax. .Richard Harvey - recorder and crumhorn. Derek Shulman can play their patented 'Shulberry' mini guitar and take up Violin duties.

I think Emerson would be unable to fit into such a band, hence the placement of Lord, who is a great musician with a and team player, and we all Love the Hammond sound. With Hammill on vocals and fellow VDGG pal Jackson on sax, my band would make a dark, dramatic sound, with Gilmour adding splashes of light to balance the mood and Holdsworth putting a jazzier edge that would work well. Lee will keep it chugging nicely and throw in some interesting licks .Portnoy would give a hard dynamic too, perhaps bring a metal influence to the table to give it muscle during Hammills darker lyrical moments.. the extra instruments lend a folky atmospheric air to the music. Edgy dark jazzy prog folk with gorgeous solos and a hard experimental edge ..now that id love to hear!

How many times has this thread been done now?

Posted By: Eerichtho
Date Posted: July 01 2007 at 16:49
hmmm...hmm..hm...Since I haven't yet answered any threads of this kind, I'll make an effort.

One option:
Mikael Akerfeldt - vocals and guitar and whatever instruments he can squeeze a sound from.
Robert Fripp - guitar
Mike Portnoy - drums, percussions
Devin Townsend - additional vocals and some of the weird sound he carries.
Jamie Muir - percussions and funny playin
Bill Bruford - drums and percussions
Peter Hammill - additional vocals, guitar, organ
Jean-Luc Ponty - electric violin
Ian Anderson - flute
Keith Emerson - keyboards
me (scared as sh*t by the lineup) - additional keyboards and guitar and percussions  and all kinds of weird instruments
and if possible, the spirit or reincarnation of Frank Zappa - whatever he wants to do
the reincarnation of Sid Barrett - appearance and some wailing
and behind all this the whole lineup of Godspeed You! Black Emperor heard on 'Lift Your...'
and all of them contribute great ideas which blend really well. 50% of the recordings and performances would utterly fail, but 50% be celestial and reflecting greatness and masterpieceness never seen before.
The second option:
Mikael Akerfeldt
Peter Lindgren
Martin Lopez
Martin Mendez
Per Wiberg
and me
Option three:
Robert Fripp
Bill Bruford
John Wetton
and me
Option number four:(as a live performance)
(a scene with a castle, a mean dragon and a good-looking princess)

A prog-protagonist/genius with a guitar arrives to save the princess from the dragon.
He plays a solo of 4 and a half hours. The dragon kills himself out of boredom.
The protagonist arrives to the princess' bedroom and plays a solo with all the techniques and tunes he learned in the last year of the conservatory.
The princess escapes looking for a heavy-metal protagonist.
