canterbury is one of the less well defined prog sub genre. when someone asks me what is canterbury style, i answer it is a progressive sub genre which sounds a bit like Caravan or Soft Machine! canterbury is richard sinclair 's voice; canterbury is this feeling that slightly distorted organ & electric guitar perfectly merge together. canterbury is those tender fender rhodes notes combined with very low frequency pitched rhythmic synthesizers. canterbury is those jazzy keyboards sounding like muted saxophone solos! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH....HOLY CANTERBURY! Been to both of them (cities) and loved them both. Sloche is the greatest band out of Quebec city. For Canterbury: toss-up between Caravan and the Machine. went for Caravan because they still exist. Gong to me is also a favorite but was from across the Chunnel in Normandy. BTW , just outside St Dunstan's gate is a second-hand record shop that sells interesting stuff. Still exists nowadays ???? |

I only know Gong and Caravan from this list, I still have to listen to Hatfield And The North and Soft Machine, the rest doesn't sound to appealing to me for now (maybe if I like Hatfield and SM I'll dig deeper into canterbury). Tough fight for me between Caravan (my favourite Canterbury band) and
Hatfield And The North (whom I picked because they were also great and

Very nice hommage greenback, and few people notice how much the one and only Richard Sinclair has done for Caravan, Hatfield &Camel plus his solo records, with his voice, bassplaying and composing.

Initially torn between Caravan & Hatfield & The North - eventually went for Caravan - I guess they pretty much typify 'that' sound.
As an aside, a few years ago, the Canterbury festival was revived, initially as a one day event, then to a full 3 day-er. Over the first couple of years, it was a great prog festival, with performances by Caravan, Porcupine Tree, 21st Century Schitzoid Band, Fish, Hawkwind (both Dave Brock and Nick Turner's versions - not the same year!), Love, Arthur Brown, Jack Bruce.... The third year was to be headlined by a bunch of reformed early-1990's 'Madchester' bands; apparently, Camel offered to play, as did Caravan..... they were both told their music wouldn't be "appropriate". We didn't go! -------------
