Vote for whoever you consider better. Your consideration can be a mix of skill, influence, style, or anything you think creates a good guitarist.
My vote goes to Andrew Latimer, although both are undeniably virtuosos. Gilmour was influential in his use of tremolo, but in the end Latimer gets my vote.

Gilmour was influential not just for his use of tremolo, but for his enormous tone and his blues-raised-to-glory phrasing.

Andy is a musical genius!! Sure, Gilmour is amazing in his own right, but in my opinion Andy was more consistently excellent!

I'd agree Latimer is the superior player, but not the superior artist.

Gilmour was more innovative (created many commonly used guitar effects) and had his moments of brilliance on the guitar, but overall, Latimer (as the best Symphonic guitarist - yes even better than the precious Hackett) has better soloing chops and has a better ear for melodic lines.
Gilmour is a marginally better singer though - Vote to Latimer

I agree with the general consensus; Gilmour was a better stage act, a better artist, but as a guitarist, Latimer has him beat

Gilmour by a hair. He's more original and influential than Latimer and I prefer his solos by a small margin.
On the other hand, Latimer is more technically skilled, slightly more versatile/creative and has a slightly nicer tone.

I forgot, Latimer is also a very good flautist

Both are fine guitarists but I wouldn't elevate them into virtuoso status.
Anyway my vote went to Gilmour.

Latimer for me, though I love Gilmour too.

Ouch - that most rare of things, a really, really tough poll.
On the one hand, we have Gilmour, with the most recognisable tone and most magnificent lead melodies in rockdom, and on the other, we have Latimer, the only man who can make a single note sound like an entire symphony, and with a wider variety of styles and techniques in his general arsenal than Gilmour, that he puts to stunning use in creating leads of a more quixotic and less immediate nature.
Therefore Latimer - but only just.

Gilmour is no virtuoso, that's for sure.. neither is Latimer but he's closer... anyway, Gilmour for me too... cause even though someone said that Latimer could make a single note sound like a symphony but Gilmour's single note could give you the goosebumps for a week!!!!!

Latimer is very good indeed, and in some quarters, sadly underrated.
But I have to vote for Gilmour - at his best his tone is superb.
(Though he isn't in my top five though!)

Agreed. Saw Latimer live with Camel in 1978 at UC San Diego campus (while a student there) and compared to seeing footage of Gilmour (never seen him play live - my loss), Gilmour is a guitarist-artist par-excellence...

David Gilmour vs. Andrew Latimer is glory against emotion. Personally I prefer emotion over glory. So My Vote goes to Andrew Latimer, as the only man who can make the guitar cry.

I must also keel towards Andy , mainly because on top of his amazing playing, he is fighting ill health with such class. Let's give him a nod and a wink.

Both are brilliant musicians but I have to give it to Andy Latimer, the nicest guy in the music business. Both play with a lot of emotion, but Latimer is possibly THE definition of emotion in music and he's more versatile too... not to mention his flute skills.

Mr. Gilmour by faaaaaaaaaaaaaar. I hate blues, and yet love the guy's guitar workings (at least in Pink Floyd), so that should say something!

I went for Mr. David Gilmour. Pink Floyd was my first band, and it's probably important to my vote, but no other person in the world can mix my emotions with the guitar playing as David Gilmour does.
But Andrew Latimer is surely in my top 10 guitarists of all time and he was very underrated. Talking about other things, his flute playing is amazing, and Gilmour has the good voice that Latimer doesn't have. So, for me, the difference is just on this very subjective argument of emotion and feeling when playing the guitar.
And they are guitar virtuosos, because playing with emotion and feeling every sound that comes out of the guitar is playing well, and is advanced technique, thus virtuosism.

Latimer by a small margin.
Slightly more technically proficient, slightly more emotional.
But both are amongst the very, very best.

Yeah and sometimes history is overrated (I'm so proud of myself for not dropping any anti-Floyd smears in here). Latimer most certainly kicks more ass.

I find it interesting how many people at this site have a thing for Camel. Just an observation. I can remember the 70's and Camel was considered a fringe band at best. We hardly ever listened to them but we knew about them. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the band, but they seem to fit the classification of 'elevator prog' or 'easy listening prog'. Not that that is bad thing, hmmmmmmmm.................maybe I should give Snow Goose another spin and see or better still, hear if I am missing anything.
As far as guitar players go I will have to side with Gilmour for his ability to move the soul.

A tiny vote for Latimer here. Mostly because of Lady Fantasy and that absolutely stunning explosion for the final part. Floyd are mostly a lyrics/ideas band for me, so I perhaps tend to unfairly overlook Gilmour's input. Neither are particular favourites of mine, really, since I tend to prefer something slightly faster.

So far those are my thoughts on Camel as well, just a tad nicer . But I just don't get the hype.

As much as I love Andy Latimer (and obviously so do many people - just look at the results), it basically comes down to one critical question: which one of the two is responsible for one of my favourite guitar solo's ever, namely 'The Final Cut'? And the answer of course is David Gilmour. So there you go.

Well said. I donīt dislike Camel either and I think Latimer is a very good guitarist but he sure sounds as Maestro Gilmourīs aprentice.

Latimer gets my vote, although is hard to say who is the best between the two. The Snow Goose is my favorite album and there Latimer was at his top For my taste, the top of Gilmour was when he played together with R.Waters.

I like Camel better than I like Pink Floyd. But I have to admit that Gilmour has been more innovative. (But hell, Latimer kicks his ass on flute!)
