Some of you might know the website http://www.cdbaby.com - cdbaby.com ... in the next few weeks I'll post some recommendations of albums which are available on that website.

NOTE: Instead of most other online cd shops cdbaby.com offers extensive high quality samples ... simply click the "play all files" button in the left sidebar of the album pages ... that's one of the reasons why I chose to create a thread about this particular shop: You can listen to my recommendations. The other reason is that cdbaby.com is a really fair company in regard to the artists ... at least I have heard nothing but good things about them.Big%20smile

You can also have a look at a dynamic chart of cdbaby albums on my website: http://progtology.com/home/charts.xhtml?chart.source=cdbaby - http://progtology.com/home/charts.xhtml?chart.source=cdbaby (currently that list is not very long, but it will grow and then the filter options of the chart will come in handy)

Let me begin with this album:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/beyondtwilight3 - Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making (2006)
Brilliant "prog metal for people who don't like prog metal".Smile

Another one:

also quite heavy, but rooted more in the Fusion domain.

http://cdbaby.com/cd/anglagard2 - Anglagard - Epilog (1994, re-released 2003)

For those who don't know Bryan Beller: He's best known as the bassist of Beer for Dolphins and the Mike Keneally Band.Big%20smile

cdbaby is amazing.  You can get somewhat well-known bands, as well as the most obscure stuff possible.

My roommate recorded an album in his apartment studio last summer, and it is available at cdbaby.

Not entirely prog, but check it out if you like Satriani-style guitar stuff.

Well, speaking of bands on CD Baby who sound like Porcupine Tree and Radiohead, I'd check out http://cdbaby.com/cd/ambo - Ambo .  One of the two guys in the group composed the soundtrack to the computer games Myst and Riven.  Also has a slight country coloration to it.

Just bought the following from CDBaby:

Afenginn - Retrograd
Afenginn - Akrobakkus
Invert - Invert
Invert - Between the Seconds
Invert - The Strange Parade

Not cheap, but not expensive.

Oh another album you can get from there is:

Astrid Proll - Astrid Proll (but I got my copy direct from Noisex Records).

I also like the fact I can use PayPal on there, it saves all the hassle with debit cards.

Haha, this thread's gonna make me go broke. I don't know whether to Cry or Big%20smile

I recently found out about this fine website, my first order of 5 CDs came about a week ago. Here's some stuff to check out:

Skywhale - World at Mind's End (remastered in 2006)
http://cdbaby.com/cd/skywhale - http://cdbaby.com/cd/skywhale
I can't get over how good this album is. Loving every one of the tracks a lot. Their description of "eclectic, soaring, melodic, progressive, jazz rock fusion" works well. Unfortunately the samples don't do it much justice, but still definitely worth a try.

Deluge Grander - August in the Urals (2006)
http://cdbaby.com/cd/delugegrander - http://cdbaby.com/cd/delugegrander
Fine album from members of the fusion band Cerebus Effect (whose three releases you can also get from CDbaby). Fusion-esque symphonic rock. Check out the reviews here.

Echolyn - As the World (1995, 2005 release)
http://cdbaby.com/cd/echolyn8 - http://cdbaby.com/cd/echolyn8
Great album from Gentle Giant inspired symphonic prog group Echolyn. Check out their other albums on CDbaby especially Suffocating the Bloom (which I've yet to hear myself) and Mei.

Black Bonzo - Lady of the Light (2004)
http://cdbaby.com/cd/blackbonzo - http://cdbaby.com/cd/blackbonzo
Nice hard rocking retro-prog. I've been told it is similar to Heep, though I've yet to hear a Heep song so I couldn't verify that. I've been listening to it this week and I quite like it.

I'll be making another order of 5 soon. Certainly I'll be getting the Astrid Proll album, if Chamberry and Geck0 recommend it then I'm sure it'll be good. I'll also be trying to complete my Echolyn collection as well as checking out the recommendations here now. Thanks for the thread, Mike.

Nice one, Speesh!  It's not quite a 5/5, but it's at least a 4, almost 4.5 for me, so I hope that doesn't put you off!

Astrid Proll will just get better I believe.  I'm greatly looking forward to their next album.

This cracked me up!

Your CDs have been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CDs and polished them to make
sure they were in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CDs into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Sunday, June 3rd.

LOL

Spleesh, I presume you mean Chamberry and my own reviews?  It is a great album, I just hope you're not disappointed.

Hahaha, you gave yourself away there, mate. Next time try to be more subtle when shamelessly promoting yourself. ;-) I also don't think you're in a neutral enough position to declare it a "travesty," which I'm pretty sure http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/travesty - you are misusing . ;-)

I wasn't trying to be subtle in the least. I AM Clay Withrow. And I worked my butt off on the CD and hope people will give it a listen. So check it out and let me know. Trust me, I wouldn't try to hide this fact. I'm about as proud as one could be.

Hi Evans.
Like Mike said, there are very good albums here, by bands who try to get a break on their own. The obscurity of it doesn't always mean it's not any good.
I'll give you one example - I posted here about an album by a band (or rather side project) called C'est Mortel and this album, is not only an excellent example of progressive rock (or even metal), but unjustifiably unknown and disregarded - http://cdbaby.com/cd/cestmortel - http://cdbaby.com/cd/cestmortel

There are more of course.

Like you said, there's this section - http://cdbaby.com/sale - http://cdbaby.com/sale  which has nice albums for cheap.

I do most of my album purchases online and while this is not my main soruce of purchase (it's usually Greg Walker, Wayside/Cuneiform, Laser's Edge/Ken Golden, Big Balloon which has closed, Kinesis, Of Sound Mind, The End Records, ReR, Indie Jazz and others) but CD Baby is a good place to look for those less exposed musicians/bands. There are good gems to be found.
There's also the convenient genre classification in there which helps scout for music.

Have fun Smile

Wow, thanks for all those other recommendations as well, i once met a guy who told me about Wayside, and i've been meaning to look it up. I'm trying some C'est Mortel right now, and i'll keep them in ming for next time. :)
But, once again, is "without plastic" recommended? Does that mean i will just get the discs with a piece of paper stuck in between or what ?

^ "no plastic" means that you'll get the regular CD without the jewel case. You'll get the disc itself, booklet and paper inlay (don't know if this is the right word) ... you just need an empty jewel case to complete the CD. this simply reduces shipping cost.Smile

Two excellent blasts from the past: Lancaster and Lumley's Marscape and Peter and the Wolf (which was new to me.)  Also all of Phideaux's catalog except Chupacambras, which I will get around to soon.

Guys- Check out this band: http://cdbaby.com/cd/helmetofgnats
One of the best instrumental purchases I've found online. I think many of you will dig it.

Also, these guys intrigue me: http://cdbaby.com/cd/gostaberlingssaga

And this band, who I befriended on myspace: http://cdbaby.com/cd/abigailsghost

And, a shameless self promotion: http://cdbaby.com/cd/milestomars
This is my band. Not prog, but spacey and melodic enough that many may enjoy from PA (at least, I hope!).

I love CD Baby! And thanks for the Ambo recommendation: http://cdbaby.com/cd/ambo

I have heard of Helmet of Gnats but haven't picked that one up yet.

I do have the Abigail's Ghost album called Selling Insincerity.  Wonderful album - a must have for all PT fans.

edit:  The Helmet of Gnats album has a great fusion jazz sound - Brand X/Mahavishnu like.

THE STRAWMEN: Saving Faded Dreams
http://cdbaby.com/cd/strawmen
Jangly guitar pop diary about love, God, and  desperation. . .not necessarily in that order.

1 -    Runaway
2 -    It's A Miracle
3 -    Cut It Loose
4 -    Can't Satisfy
5 -    Old News
6 -    Aggravation
7 -    Saving Faded Dreams
8 -    The Reason Why
9 -    Everything's Turned Blue
10 -    Innocent
11 -    Find A Reason
12 -    I Don't Live There Anymore
13 -    Amputate

This record is a catchy collection of pop tunes with just the right mix of jangle and melancholy to convince you this band plays from the heart. From the opening, "Let's ditch this haunted house and catch a bus downtown"(Runaway) to "Now that my heart is gone, I'm a harmless man" (Amputate), the songs could be a soundtrack for most of our lives.  One reviewer (NotLame.com) says "Saving Faded Dreams" is "Absolutely fantastic jangle-pop par-excellance! Imagine Del Amitri and REM-insprired Byrds jangle and you have The Strawmen. Oceans of gorgeous jangle, an army of melodic hooks and thought-provoking lyrics."

However. . .we all know there's too much BS and too many exclamation points used to sell stuff nowadays.  So, in a modest attempt to limit our contribution to that general psychic pollution, CDBaby and The Strawmen are providing MP3 samples for all our songs.  Click and see for yourself.  If they don't float your boat, go find something that does. . .life is too short to listen to music you don't like.  But if they do, then buy our CD so we can make a little money and do this again.  Either way, Peace to you and yours.

The Strawmen are:
Bill Harmon: Lead singer, lyricist, guitarist, and songwriter. . .Bill once upon a time had the rare opportunity to pitch some songs to the late Johnny Cash in person. The Man in Black didn't care for those particular tunes, but appreciated Bill's spunk (Bill had chased Cash down in an open field on Cash's property) and told him to "never put that guitar down".  Bill has never been quite sure of the wisdom of that advice.

Mark Harmon: Bassist, guitarist, songwriter, background vocalist, recording engineer, and producer. . .Mark's love for the bass shows in his lyrical approach to the instrument. If you like bass parts that contribute to the atmosphere as well as provide a rock-solid bottom end, then you'll like Mark's playing.  Check out the sample from Track 12 ("I Don't Live There Anymore") to get a flavor.  Mark and Bill are brothers.

David Leonhardt: Main guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, and hook-meister extraordinaire. . .David's inspiration for many of his guitar parts comes from Johnny Marr of "The Smiths". You can hear Dave's chimey melodies particularly well on "Can't Satisfy," "Saving Faded Dreams," and "The Reason Why."

"Saving Faded Dreams" also features:
Mike Roe: Producer, guitarist, background vocalist and relentless promoter.  Mike is on the road a lot with "The Lost Dogs" and "The 77s" and is always talking up The Strawmen.  Mike's tasteful electric and acoustic guitar work is all over the record.

Bruce Spencer: Drummer for "The 77s", Bruce volunteered to play drums on this record just because he liked the songs.  He's a musician's musician.

Scott Reams: Percussion and post-production work.

My father purchased this online in MP3 format, and it's definitely worth checking out...

Hehe sorry its been a while, I shortly afterwards moved up to university and was too busy for music for a while. But I've been listening to it again a lot lately, and I can confidently answer yes. 88MHz is just fantastic, sometimes I love it and sometimes I can't even understand it. Thanks for that one, I got it and it's very nice.  I wouldn't compare them too much to PT or Radiohead.  Stereolab comes to mind first.  One of the vocalists sounds a lot like Greg Lake, also.

I also ordered Phideaux's Chubacabras with that and just to try something new, Alitheia Chthonick.  More on the metal side of prog than my typical taste, but I liked it.

Sorry for the double post, but I just noticed this is dedicated to CD's on CD Baby.com.  So here is info about my CD:  Surfing the Solar Winds.

This album has taken me about 15 years to make.   It is inspired by older Rush (Hemispheres is one of my favorites) and synthesized J.S. Bach (Don Dorsey's version of the fugue from Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, from his BachBusters CD, is a favorite).

Although aggressive guitars are prevalent, everything is played using synths and samplers.  I believe that new technology can auger in a new generation of creative progressive rock, in particular if you are a keyboardist.

The music is more on the rock side of progressive rock (I don't love meandering slower/softer parts).

Time-space Continuum is probably the most progressive (with interesting time signatures), but please check out Trick or Treat and Surfing the Solar WInds too (or course, I would love for you to listen to the full CD).

You can stream the new album for free here:  http://www.soundclick.com/jeffreynaness - www.soundclick.com/jeffreynaness

You can pick up the album here:  http://cdbaby.com/cd/naness2 - http://cdbaby.com/cd/naness2

I think the album has been very well received.

Thanks for listening.

I got my own album on CD BABY:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/leonalvarado
There are sound snippets for each song but there are better snippets on my own site:
http://www.leonplaysmusic.com/Site/Music_%26_Credits.html

I think the CD Baby snippets happen from around ten seconds into the songs up until thirty seconds after. The main problem I had with that was that some of my songs "build up" into them and so it seems as if they are very slow. Best thing to do is to go to the address on my site first and then check out the cdbaby.com snippets to get a more rounded feel for it. Overall CD Baby is a great place to find music. More and more musicians are opting to release their material directly (this is more so the case with Progressive Rock bands), there are some very cool music on their site.

Agent Moosehead - Neil, Throw the Switch

My latest discovery, found em completely by accident on youtube. Progressive Avant-Jazz madness. Sometimes gets a little too cacophonic for my tastes but I'm continuing to listen with an open mind. I'd describe it as a mix between Zappa's great big band composition, John Zorn's avant-craziness, and Estradasphere's randomness (not to mention reverence to video game music). Check it out if you're into any of the above.

They definitely deserve to be listed on PA, though I believe they're unsigned so they might not fit the requirements IIRC. Either way if anyone involved in artist submission reads this, give em a try. I think you'll agree with me.

Checkout this new progmetal band "Floodline" I found there cd's on http://www.cdbaby.com - www.cdbaby.com    They sound like Opeth yet different, They have there own style going on. Here is a reveiew that i wrote about there new album entitled "beneath the waves", Peace.

Floodline is a very talented new progmetal band that I discovered on myspace. This is the band I’ve

been waiting to hear!!! I was first pulled in from there cover art and later found out that Ed unitsky

did the album art. Ed unitsky has done cover art for "The flower kings" "The Tangent" "Unitopia"

and many other great prog bands. Another reason I was pulled into Floodline's music is

Randy George plays keys on there new album "Beneath The waves". Randy george plays bass

with Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy for those who don’t know. Lets get back to Floodline, the

new album entitled "Beneath The Waves" is a well produced and thought out concept album that is very dynamic in the vein of Opeth. This album is in my top 10 prog metal albums for 2009. Floodline

Reminds me of Opeth yet different, They have there own thing going on. If Opeth and Alice in

Chains had a baby it would sound like Floodline. This is an amazing album from start to

finish, many twists and turns in between. I bought the cd at www.cdbaby.com but I think you

can find it elsewhere. Check these guys out at www.myspace.com/floodlinemusic you wont

regret it! Peace........

I used to be a CD Baby addict.  It starts by searching for bands you know so the site will pull up bands that (allegedly) sound similar.  I've discovered some pretty great stuff this way.

Not long ago I decided the cons outweighed the pros when it came to owning CDs so I mainly download all my music now (as long as it's high bitrate and non-DRM).  Fortunately CD Baby does that too!

I finally put my own thing out there recently.  It's currently being considered for inclusion into PA but you're welcome to check it out:
