Taking as "the ones": GENESIS, YES, PINK FLOYD, JETHRO TULL, KING CRIMSON, VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR and GENTLE GIANT...

...Then here are "the others"( 3 or more votes on the part 1of this poll... )

" Sorry in advance if the ones I choose in your opinion don't fit in the poll or are unfair...I just tried...Maybe for the most of you a poll like this does not make any sense, but for me, at first steps in this musical world, it is very very interesting...Please vote a lot... "

1 vote for CAMEL was mine...

Assuming that you mean by "the others" groups as powerful, influential and crafty as "the ones" you've mentioned, I'd say "Other". It may be Caravan, for example, or Soft Machine...

At least they were first generation rather than 3rd or 5th

So hard to choose...I love Rush and PT is ok in my books, not to mention Marillion, who have done some great work, but for some reason Camel is dearest to my heart...I'm rooting for A. Latimer, my favourite underdog.

Very close between the first three listed here. I could have voted for any of them!
But in the end I chose Porcupine Tree.
They are a band of the future, and will be highly regarded in years to come.
(They are highly regarded now, of course!) :)

Porcupine Tree comes close, but I'm going to have to go with Zappa. I've heard nearly all of the PT albums and enjoyed them all. However nearly all of the Zappa albums I've heard are great as well, and there's still a lot of Zappology I have yet to get into.

ELP are definitely one of the mega-Prog groups... both influential and had huge mainstream success.

I seem to remember that the "big seven" classic Prog groups according to this site were King Crimson, ELP, Yes, Genesis, VdGG, Gentle Giant, and Pink Floyd.  Or was Rush in it?  I would think possibly not as they (as in the band members) were not British and it was not one of the original Prog bands.

I would have thought GG not nearly as "big" as Jethro Tull (same goes for VdGG).  That they are very popular amongst many Progheads here, and considered one of the best by many, is by-the-by.  I had never heard of them before getting back into Prog, so discovering the band was revelatory (my favourite of those big Prog bands and one of my favourite over-all).  Not that well known outside of Prog circles (at least not in my part of the world from my experience).

Under the definition of Prog rock at this site, it cites the, "the major acts that defined the genre in the 1970s [as] Yes, Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Rush and King Crimson..."

If one takes a somewhat revisionist attitude towards Prog, then my favourite band (with many albums) is probably MAGMA.  But Zeuhl (along with a great deal of music from other categories here such as RIO) were more like parallel to Prog movements making progressive music.

So, I might offer, for instance, Focus, PFM, Banco..., Le Orme and Gryphon as other possibilities.  Then there's (sticking with classic bands) the Canterbury scene music such as Soft Machine, Hatfield,,,, and Caravan etc. etc. And then there's...

Suffice to say, there are so many great bands from so many categories.  Most of my favourite bands and albums happen to be less mainstream in prog circles, but relatively obscure artists would not be appropriate for this topic even if one personally finds them more satisfying, or better, than most of the big names.

And I may not care for it, but Kansas is worthy of note.

I'm surprised at how few votes "other" has.  I suppose that I consider Zappa the most important of those listed.

I'll vote for MAGMA as it's a very important band to discover when going on a  Prog Archives musical journey, and has opened up many ears to off the well-beaten path progressive music.

ELP was actually one of the hugest bands in the world in the 70's selling more records than the stones or the doors but if you call them an "other" band I definetly vote for them!

I don't really see what your division in terms of "the ones" and "the others" is based on.

Just looking at this second poll, I don't understand how anyone in their right mind could compare a prolific artist like Zappa with a rather lame second- (or third-) division prog band like Camel.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with Camel per se; I enjoy a little MOONMADNESS every now and then...

But surely anyone who's got EARS will be able to tell that UNCLE MEAT, APOSTROPHE, ONE SIZE FITS ALL, ROXY AND ELSEWHERE, LATHER, CIVILIZATION PT. III and a few dozen other Zappa albums are far more adventurous than anything Camel ever did?

(And please don't get me started on Rush!)

At the risk of dating myself, in my day, ELP was considered one of the big ones. They were certainly one of the more visible bands on the scene and seemed to have a lot of followers, myself included. Funny thing is though, I grew tired of them quite quickly. I guess I'm not surprised they are not viewed with as much reverence as they once were.

...To give the poll voters point of view on ELP discussion...

Choosing "the ones" and "the others" I have only cared of the ones that seem to be the favourite ones...No others criteria here...
The same poll with different questions could end up in a different way and it would be probably more interesting for me too, but here was just about favourites...

Others: CARAVAN - 1 vote
              SOFT MACHINE - 1
              THE FLOWER KINGS - 1
