I bought these really nice sony MDR-XD400 headphones less than a year a ago.  Obviously they are stereo, but a couple months ago they started playing in mono.  Both channels are coming through both sides, and its really pissing me off.  I opened them up, but i couldnt figure out how to fix them.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  It sucks listening to prog. with mono headphones...

Real strange. and are you sure it doesn't comes from the source?
Have you tried the same source with other headphones?

This is most likely a problem of the jack (plug) ... any stereo headphone jack (small/big, doesn't matter) will default back to mono if it isn't plugged in all the way ... or if there's a problem with the contacts.

You know what, my Sony headphones are acting funny, too. I have the MDR-XD200 series and it sounds as if the left side dominates the right side. I've tried plugging and re-plugging and it still does it. It's got one of those attachments that you put on the smaller input to make it fit the bigger, so I wonder if that's the problem.

I've got the attachment off and listening to Marillion through iTunes and it sounds fine. Could it be that little attachment, I wonder?

Plug contact problems are classic on cheap headphones.

no i've tried the headphones with several computers, an ipod, and an old CD player and it't the same for all of  them, and I have different paid of headphones that work just fine in all of them

it's really strange, since sony won't refund me or send me replacements, I opened them up to see If i couldn't fix them myself, but no luck yet.

I have a Sony MDR 750 (I know the first number is right) and it never gave me a problem. But that was anything but a cheapie. I was set to buy an outstanding pair of headphones and it sounded almost better than the AKG 600, but comfortwise, this one won hands down.

My other pair is a Seinheiser
