the ultimate guitarist, just throwing that out there Favorite bands come in waves, currently it is Amon Duul II, but Mahavishnu Orchestra has just been constantly been playing, over and over. I have worked myself back in McLaughlin's work. I just listened to Extrapolation twice and was going for the threepeat, but decided to put on Devotion, which is fantastic as well. What else do I get from him in later years, or earlier. I have these albums Devotion Extrapolation Inner Mtn Flame through Visions the first Shakti, and I plan to get the rest, at least of the earlier years, how are the Shakti revisted albums come off I also have some album with him and a few other dudes playing weird jazz rock, it's okay, the album cover is a rainbow, it's sort of gay looking oh and i have On the Corner and Bitches Brew, what i mean to say is, if he contributed to albums, i would like to know about them as well in addition, anything good from the other guys would be good too, mostly just interested with the original line up though, don't get me wrong, i absolutely love Visions and Apocalypse. I wouldn't have gotten into the band without Visions. peace |

I only have Visions and really don´t like it that much... have heard Inner mountain flame and...wooow

From his solo albums, make sure you get The Promise. and also After the Rain. and The Heart of Things. and Thieves and Poets. and also get at least one of his three flamenco albums with di Meola and de Lucia. And the Shakti albums can easily be mistaken for something of divine origin - that's how good they are. Oh, what the heck? just track them down and get them all. It doesn't get much better than McLaughlin and, generally speaking, every album touched by him turns gold. If you want something somewhat like Mahavishnu, Electric Guitarist comes pretty close. He has some fiery solos, but it's a lot "jazzier" than MO. Plus, most of the first version of the band guests on the album anyway. -------------

| 'My Goals Beyond' is a lovely McLaughlin solo record with Goodman and Cobham on hand, 'Passion, Grace and Fire' the best of the Flamenco projects. And you may also like John Abercrombie; 'Timeless', 'Gateway', 'Speak of the Devil'. |

He MIGHT like Abercrombie. However, he's very spacy and not as fiery as McLaughlin. He's very... ambient. He still can be fast, but he's not as fiery and intense as McLaughlin. I think he'd like Al Di Meola a lot more. -------------

Mmm.. really depends. Abercrombie and McLaughlin are much closer to each other in style, tone and approach. Di Meola sounds nothing like either and only began experimenting outside of fusion later in his career. |

"Mahavishnu" is a very good album to have. Billy Cobham and Bill Evans (sax) joined forces w\John McLaughlin to recreate the energy of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra but with a different slightly more jazzy sound.

It should be said this album features Jonas Hellborg on bass (mostly fretless, I think), then an aspiring young talent, heavily influenced by MO in his early years, who later came to be one of the most prominent bass players in the fusion scene. let me reiterate your comments. There are a couple of boots floating of McLaughlin and Hellborg from the late 80's, made touring Germany , and the music is astonishing good - presumably the boot because of good quality was copied from radio broadcasts and these demand a legit release.
Personally I think Jonas can do very little wrong (although I can think of one stinker with his name on it) and so would recommend checking out Jonas Hellborg's DEM and Bardo Records catalogue.
Back to McLaughlin: I'm surprised how quickly I came off the boil wrt Industrial Zen, which is not true about his previous CD of different style of music/different line-up per track, The Promise.

No, Lane with Sipe or Lane with anybody else, and Hellborg are major highlights. The offending album is Jonas Hellborg & Neils Jensen's Ordinary Day. Hellborg is the producer and I don't think even even plays his bass on it - for that reason I didn't include it in PA's Hellborg discography ------------- The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS.
