The list includes some of the major mailto:R'n@B - R'n'B bands still active mid and late 60's (i.e. when the term actually meant 'rhythm and blues', rather than the castrated soulless soul of the current day pop charts), all the three goodfathers of British blues (Mayall, Korner and Davis), plus a few minor bands I saw (so apologies to those who remember other minor bands - but please list).

Great insight from Jack Bruce on TV last week (on the previously mentioned Jazz Britannia part 2 programme), discussing why young British jazz musicians readily turned to rock and pop:

1. Big audiences.

2. "With Cream I and Ginger could play free jazz as a rhythm section, while Eric (Clapton) played the Ornette Coleman role. However, we didn't tell Eric that!"

David Johansson's Harry Smiths (former punk and New York Doll, has turned into a great blues singer - also check out his version of Spider's Web with Gary Lucas - as opposed to the Joan Osborne version also with Gary Lucas)

BTW the Graham Bond with Sonny Boy Williamson CD sounds tasty but I wonder what the sound quality is like - btw SBW with the Yardbirds is a good recording for the times. (In the same vein did you know that is a John Lee Hooker/Groundhogs album  wasissued by the UK Indigo label)

Graham Bond is also found playing with Dick Heckstall Smith's The Story Ended and at least one Jack Bruce live album (e.g. Radio One In Concert)

I voted for Zeppelin but too be honest ive not heard of most of those bands except the obvious ones! Wow and Free now you dont ever hear them mentioned much nowdays.

Tended to be  treated as the poor man's Rolling Stones - minor hit with Rosaline - before changing radically in mid 60's, e.g. SF Sorrow, Parachute.  And I do believe they are back to the R'n'B nowadays.................

Kossoff left and then completely destroyed himself on drugs, Andy Fraser formed the Sharks with Chris Spedding (and lasted the first album, then what happened to him), Kirk and Rodgers did Bad Company (and wasn't there Box Of Frogs????). Paul Rodgers did that masterful  tribute album  Muddy Waters Blues at the end of the 80's - which proved to me Dave Gilmour was a good guitarist; (I'd long known jazz fusion guitarist Dave Gilmore was)

Reasons why  Free are coming back into vogue? Paul Rodgers fronting Queen.  Check out the stripped down blues of the Black Keys, whose vocalist keeps reminding me of Rodgers, and (a real long shot) perhaps the inclusion of Black Cat Bones (post-Kossoff and Kirk) track on the Legend Of A Mind sampler, but still  sounds so Free.

All the while recording a solo album and forming Back Street Crawler and touring in John Martyn's Band circa
Live at Leeds then being thrown off the tour for being more out of it than John Martyn and Danny Thompson put together.
