OK, this is about the only aspect of our lives I don't think has yet been covered - we've had hobbies, jobs, food, drink, cars......

Not having kids, my wife & I concentrate on pets (generally cheaper, & you can bugger off for the weekend, leaving friends to feed them....... yes, I know, hands up, I admit it, I am selfish) - so, in no particular order......

Baggins - black & white dynamo of a cat, 6 months old (& if he keeps waking me up at night, he may not get to 7 months!)

Dweezil - 8 year old silver tabby (name usually shortened to either Thug or Bastard)

Buttercup - 5 year old Californian kingsnake

Dylan - 8 year old Australian Bearded Dragon (the coolest and most laid back lizard.......)

Topaz & Tarkus - 2 9 month old Leopard Gekkos

So, there you have it - any other pet owners out there??

Yo

I agree that pets are much better and easier than children, as I am not much  more than a child myself, being just 16 years of age. I too own pets.

I own 2 Cats and 2 Guineapigs. I'm not sure what breed the Cats are as  I got them from a rescue home. These pets are easy to look after, all you need to do with cats is give them food and they're happy, but i do supply them with alot of attention aswell. Guineapigs are also relatively easy to look after, I just have to move them into there outside run during the day and into the inside run during the night. Guineapigs drink about 10 litres a day (slight exageration).

Your Cats have cool names my Cats have boring names; Sabrina and Sophie.

Whoa Jim! Sounds like your place is a regular Zoo! Tarkus the Gekko Cool! I wanted to name one of our dogs Robert Fripp ! We have two very very hyper Australian Cattle Dogs, Harriet and Ozzy. They like to chase everythig from frisbees to rollerbladers. I've been trying to teach Ozzy to go to the fridge and get me beer but it's not working too well since there are other more interesting things for him in there such as FOOD!

Is he epileptic ?

We have two cats in addition of our two children

their names are :

(not my children, but the cats )

Zorro, a 12 years old ,totaly black gentleman and Bilbo his new friend, white with small black spots (we have checked, he is not a dalmacian).

Gremlin, the brother of Zorro hunts now the clouds.

To the same question about pets, in our garden some frogs (yes we are in France !), hedgehogs, lizards and various birds could answer you "we have four humans"

In the past I've had a couple of boa constrictors; Bal (boa..ha ha) and Bosely. Caiman's (Crocodiles). Stashu and Baishu. Assorted other creepy crawlies and FISH. Bunches of FISH.

I've had aquariums for ages. I'm planning a new tank soon. Saltwater.

Are you sure to like Prog ?

Maybe you prefer 'Variations Goldberg" - J.S. Bach ?

If you like pets, have you tested canine balls ?

We have a brown and white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (toy spaniel) named Wellington, after the English Duke who defeated (OK, helped defeat) your Nappy at Waterloo (the battle, not the awful BLABBA song!) I figure a small dog needs a big name!

He's cute, in a bug-eyed, constantly shedding, barking, cringing, clinging, pooping, foul-breathed kind of way....

Jim, anyone who owns more than two pets is certifiably wacko! (It's been scientifically proven.)

You'll be eating cat food next, and willing all your money "to my beloved Fluffykins."

You sad, sad man!

(And you guys with snakes are compensating for something!) Wink

Spoke too soon - got home last night & Buttercup had passed away............. causes unknown; gives one pause for thought; my wife & I have decided no more snakes, this brings it home that we evidently knew too little about the species - how do you tell if a snake's ill??

I have a plant (one small plant, in a little pot).  It's 3 years old.

Every few months it gets all yellow and almost dies, because I begin to forget to water it as I walk around in a daze thinking about music all day.  Then I see my ailing buddy, freak out, feel immense shame, and nurse it back to health.  Then I repeat...

Posted By: corbet
Date Posted: March 18 2004 at 06:54
oh, and  about your snake, Jim.  I'd be crushed if my little green (yellow) buddy died -- I can't imagine if it had a face, and moved, and stuff..

My Boa, Bosley, was injured by a rat during a feeding session. The small cut, nick actually, near Bosley's mouth became infected. Bosley went to the Vet and they refused to treat him, "We don't treat snakes here." At the time I was living in Upper Michigan and there was only the one Vet in the area. Bosley died days later. I tried anti-septics and other home remedies to no avail. Alas, poor Bosley, I knew him well.

That's the problem with so-called 'exotic' pets; the lack of local vets with the necessary knowledge.

This is a shame, as many captive bred lizards (Australian Bearded Dragons, Leopard Gekkos, Skinks etc) make excellent pets; very little specialist knowledge required, easy to feed, they don't bite - as long as you get their environment right (which is much less of a hassle than, say, tropical fish), you shouldn't have too many problems.

Sorry to hear about your snakes guys. That is the only downside of pets eventually they pass-away, usualy before their owners.

I've got a sister (15 years old) and a cactus. The first pet is very noisy and the second is quiet. Once the second bit the first... that was very funny!

Jim, it seems that my "poke" at you snake owners (meant only to get a "rise" out of you, and to provoke a humourous shot back in my direction) was a case of extremely unfortunate timing. (Once again, my sense of humour has "landed me in it!")Ouch

You have my genuine sympathies for the sad loss of your pet. I know that I too would be downcast if our dog were to suddenly die before his time.Disapprove

I hope that things are otherwise well with you, and again, sorry for my seemingly callous remarks.

Sincerely,

Peter

Whoa Petey-boy......

No worries - I know you weren't being callous; we're all the victims of bad timing at some point or other.

I am fully aware there was no offense meant or implied and I assure you there was definitely none taken.

Peace

You only need licenses over here to keep animals known to be venomous or dangerous.

We've had Dylan for 7/8 years now - he was about the size of my thumnail when we got him from the breeder, & he's now about 18/24 inches long, as dim as the working day is long, totally laid back & an absolute glutton for locusts & any green vegetable (except apples, they seem to upset his constitution..... with very smelly results )

JIM: i had a large enclosure in the backyard of my parents house where i kept all sorts of lizards, bearded dragons, blue toungues, stumpy tails, legless lizards(man, could they knock back the booze) blind snakes, barking geckos(they really do bark, they also shoot out a smelly brown oil from thier tails if disturbed) i think you would have found it very interesting. We used to feed them live fieldmice and i think you would find the Bearded Dragons hunting method a little more lively than "laid back" (do you hand feed the locusts or let him catch it himself) i wanted to be a herpatologist once and still have a big interest in lizards and snakes

She would have loved the PROG ARCHIVES site and would have been great with her sly sense of humour and would have given all of us a run for our money.......i miss her  and love her dearly!! ...there are not enough hearts....

A moving post, Uncle Dude. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Life is fleeting -- love is eternal.

It's all about love. Treasure and nurture your little nephew! Lead by example.

Sometimes, just watching my kids play, or even when thinking along the lines of: "Wow! I'm a father!" I am moved to tears of joy.

A life can be empty if there's no love in it. I am fortunate to have a spouse/soul mate whom I dearly love, and two terrific kids, therefore I am a wealthy man!

My solid inner foundation of love and happiness means that I simply can't relate to to much angry/alienated music, as I could in my youth. I crave and respect love, truth, beauty (not simply of a physical nature), honour, honesty, goodness, hope, loyalty, compassion, humour, etc. These are the eternals that enable me to deal with this screwed-up world.

"A time when honour meant much more to a man than life, and the days knew only strife to tell right from wrong...."

My personal philosophy: Try to be an overall force for good. Put back more than you take.

If, when I die, people can honestly say of me 'He was a good man," then I will have lived a meaningful and good life.

Live, love, learn,Smile

Peter

Hey Dude

What can I say? By the age of your nephew, your loss must have been fairly recent; you have my utmost sympathy, empathy and support. The loss of a family member, especially a sibling is wracking to the heart - to maintain your sense of humour, as evidenced in your recent posts is a real achievement.

Big respect, Dude!

J

Dylan is laid back until it comes to feeding time, then it's frenzy time.

We don't hand feed him, just release locusts into his vivarium & he goes as mental as an Australian the wrong side of a locked pub door.

I spent a year in Oz a few years back doing the backpacking thing, but never saw a beardy - mind you, I did wake up one morning with 2 redbacks on the ceiling above my head........they died..... violently!
