When DREAM THEATER and ROADRUNNER RECORDS Unite!

WHEN DREAM THEATER AND ROADRUNNER RECORDS UNITE!

BAND AND LABEL JOIN FORCES WITH NEW STUDIO ALBUM PLUS WORLD TOUR TO FOLLOW

ROADRUNNER RECORDS is proud to announce the signing of progressive metal pioneers Dream Theater. A new studio album, Systematic Chaos is due in June. Dream Theater will hit the road in support of the album for a world tour, including major festival appearances in Europe.

Since their first studio release in 1989, this US based five-piece has notched up record and DVD sales in excess of six million and headlined to audiences of 20,000. Having undertaken seven world tours across 42 different countries, Dream Theater has established a live reputation that has swept them to arena-status around the globe. They have appeared alongside acts such as Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Yes.

Recognized by peers and public alike for their advanced musical expertise, the band (Mike Portnoy, drums; John Petrucci, guitar; John Myung, bass; James LaBrie, vocals; Jordan Rudess, keyboards) has long held the ability to combine complex arrangements with unadulterated songwriting skills, the material often underpinned by riffs as heavy as anything in the Metallica repertoire.

"This albums got all of the elements weve become known for," reveals Portnoy. "The focus on musicianship, the skull-crushing riffs, the big progressive epics and the heart-wrenching melodies. Weve got one of the strongest and most devoted fan bases in the world, and they should certainly be happy with the new material. By working closely with the label we hope to turn a great many new heads too."

"Dream Theater and Roadrunner Records have led parallel careers on the cutting edge of metal for many years," say A&R men, Derek Oliver & Dante Bonutto, "Were thrilled to be working with a genuine market-leader, and when you add everything the guys bring to the table to the independent spirit and work ethic of the label, the results can only be exciting in the extreme!"

Prior to teaming up with Roadrunner, Dream Theater was signed to a seven-album deal with Warner Music Group worldwide. The deal commenced with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Images And Words (1992), a Gold-certified US release, and concluded, in equal style, with Octavarium (2005), a Top 40 Billboard outing. In August of last year the band issued Score, a live album/DVD (recorded at Radio City Music Hall in New York), which went straight to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard DVD charts, knocking Pink Floyd from the top!

By the following month, the five were holed up at Avatar Studios in New York, working on the new album with veteran engineer/ mixer Paul Northfield (Rush, Queensrche, Porcupine Tree). As usual, Portnoy and Petrucci chose to co-produce the project, which features seven compositions (one a 25-minute epic), and word on the grapevine is that the Dream Theater/Roadrunner alliance looks all set to kick off with a classic.

Systematic Chaos, Dream Theaters ninth studio release, arrives at a time when the band is casting a longer-than-ever shadow across the rock and metal landscape. Their influence is being acknowledged by an increasing number of contemporary, cutting-edge acts such as Stone Sour, Trivium, Shadows Fall, Opeth as their fan base continues to grow.

Touring plans will be announced shortly. Please visit http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/ - www.roadrunnerrecords.com or www.dreamtheater.net for up to the minute information.

Good reasoning doesn't necessarily  mean good title, and we don't know that DT doesn't have good reason for their title.

I remember Mikael from Opeth saying he thought DT was ok, and that he really didn't feel like they were prog, just stuck in the label for lack of a better comparison. If anything, I would say DT's new album will have some Opeth influence, since Opeth's last few albums have been of better quality than DT's.

What is prog rock ?

It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential.

No need..as I said a good reason doesn't equate to a good title.

What I mean is, if they have a good reason why would that make you change your mind and like the title?

Snakes & Arrows by itself sounds like some Viking Metal album glorifying how cool and deadly snakes are, and arrows into the mix to increase the deadliness. When you find out what the title really means, and how it relates to the album it has a different conotation is then a good title. I'm not judging title merely by how the words sound together.

Saying I don't like the name of the album isn't bashing. I believe bashing would be like, the only thing that sucks more than that name is the music.

Good call. Probably won't happen in the summer, though, because Mikael will most likely be finishing up the recording of Opeth's 9th around then.

Also, there's some overlap in the fan bases, but a lot of difference too, I think. Then again, DT once toured with Megadeth.

All we need is Pain of Salvation and Tool to sign to Roadrunner, and they can market themselves as having signed "The Four Horsemen of the Prog-Metal Apocalypse".

WTF? (what the f**k in colloquial english)

Two things:

1. Roadrunner... I'll always remember Roadrunner fondly because the first metal record I onwned (Sepultura's Chaos AD) was Roadrunner.... Today that label is much broader and with more variety (it was mostly an extreme label like Earache or Nuclear Blast - Relapse)... Today we have Opeth... But I don't like much Dream Theater to be there.... it's still a too "metallic" label... not an extreme label anymore but I just hope DT don't release another "heavy" album like TOT (which I like but not 100%) or the atrocious "The Glass Prison" song...

2. "Systematic Chaos".... atrocious title.... it kind of gets me fearful about what I just said in 1. .... But it's DT, so I shouldn't be worried. From their 8 albums and 1 EP (ACOS), I like 7and a half of the albums and the first half of the EP. So it should be OK.

IT WILL BE OK.

Update: I'm even more afraid when the label's website has SLIPKNOT as the biggest news in its portal... that band is atrocious....please.... please.... I should take a Xanax or another anxiolitic..... I'm deeply worried...ShockedConfusedShockedConfused

But then, again, is DT, so shut the f**k up T....Angry

EDIT: Oh my God... Nickelback.... so long for the "extreme metal" accusation....

Bring it on my five maestros....Big%20smile

Oh boy.

Hopefully the 'systematic' part does not amount to used-up song structures, and the 'chaos' part to a few random note solos.

I still like them quite a lot, but I expect better stuff from them, and the clicheed title and Roadrunner don't promise any better stuff, IMVHO.

I guess they couldn't think of something better since Close to the Edge and Dark Side of the Moon were taken.  Get a Life.  Who cares about the title?  Do you want a good album with a title that treads on your delicate sensibilities or the greatest title ever and an album that sucks?

Make it 5. Well, I don't actually "play" much anymore (the online stuff is too expensive, and none of my friends play it anymore, but I still collect the cards). It's the dorkiest hobby imaginable, but the game is unbelievably well-designed, and collecting is still fun.

Exactly, the same band I was thinking about when I saw that name.... It's just that Messhugah is really a systematic chaos.... a machine that plays noise in such a concentrated, exact way that makes brutality something worth listening to....DT never could play like that.... Imagine MAster Labrie singing to NO melody.... he would be screwed! Imagine him having to scream fot he whole record... man! that would suck. I'm going to agree on Johnobvious' opinion about the title: irrelevant, until further information on content (say song/track names). For instance, Train of Thought would yield a pretty progressive or somewhat intelligent label to the album, as a title...but now that we know what lies whithin, it's our very meaning of "heavy", "metal", "shred" and etc. What concerns me more is the album's structure, resembling too much Octavarium's attempt to reproduce Dream Theater's formula, in sliding soft melodies, large epics and straight-forward leanings in their metal influence. Roadrunner will sound a dubious label to promote them, with the heavier tendencies their bands mark, but it also doesn't seem "narrow-minded" - I mean, there's Opeth, right? - and there is something of an "independent spirit" mentioned. It's got all the elements that'll instigate a success, but unfortunately the same goes for the opposite, so basicly the only thing remotely significant in this post is joining Mr. Sanchez, hoping the album won't suck.

Very true. I don't believe anybody ever said "this album is going to suck because of the name"... they simply gave their opinions on the name, which is really the only thing we know about the album so far and thus the only thing that people can even give their opinions on. It's kind of odd to see people being offended by it, really, though certainly not unexpected.

As for the album, I'm looking forward to it. Another 25 minute epic? Sounds like it will, at the very least, be interesting!

And to the people who are worried about them being on Roadrunner: this is Dream Theater, they were already on a label that tried to pressure them into making a certain type of music and it resulted in arguably their weakest album (Falling to Infinity) and almost caused the breakup of the band. They've made it painfully obvious throughout their career that they won't let that kind of thing happen again, so I don't think there's anything to worry about here.

Clap At last somebody agrees with me. A good album with one of DT's best tracks ever (Lines in the sand) but a weak, almost awful song (take away my pain) and the bad just let me breathe.

I would agree Falling Into Infinity is a far better effort than Octavarium was at a more straightforward style. The only song I find to be flat out bad is that awful Desmond Child thing 'You Not Me', though perhaps there are a few too many ballads. Some work well for me though, especially 'Hollow Years'.

Fallin Into Infinity is a good album with a few really bad songs (though I like Just Let Me Breath)

I'm quietly optomistic, for the moment (later I'll be loudly optomisticLOL), that this will be a very good album.

All the heavy songs of Dream Theater have a good and intelligent arrangements, with fantastic vocals and different moods like Endless Sacrifice, In The Name Of God, Beyond This Life, Fatal Tragedy, The Mirror,Panic Attack and a big e.t.c. Heavy or not, i only expect good music in the new album.

By The Way: Systematic ChaosDead i don't like this title

"Falling Into Infinity" is one of the best DT efforts. And "Lines In The Sand" is one of their best songs.

Thanks for information, I'm really looking forward to hearing the "Systematic Chaos".

I noticed Stone Sour and other apalling stuff in the first article dedicated to DT's new album, but I hope DT will not fall down and play such music as Stone Sour do.

What about the title... quite scary... smells of Nu-Metal-Hardcore-Modern-sh*t stuff...

But "Thain Of Thought" was a very intelligent title, even art-rockish title, although ToT is DT's heaviest album... so... I don't care of the new album title.

To those of you that seem to think that this album will likely be Dt's heaviest, or very heavy-

If you guys had done some research you'd know that  Mike Portnoy himself said on Eddy Trunk's radio show that the album "has its aggressive moments" and has "lots of ups and downs" (when speaking about album mood).

Judging by MP's comments, I do not in any way think this will be as heavy as Train of Thought. I'm guessing it may be as heavy or lighter than Octavarium.

Let's analyze The Dream's history for a moment:

WDADU : let's not count this as it's the first and atrocious Dominici almost ruins it (the music is good so he didn't).

IAW: Ultra-prog metal, it's heavy but with a lot of melody, lots of mellow passages.

A:  Less prog, less melodic, heavier.

FII: As prog as A, less heavy, softer, more melodic.

SFAM: Again Ultra-prog, heavy but with mopre enphasis put to the melody.

6DOIT: First cd - heavier, less melodic, one atrocious song (Glass Prison-couldn't lose the oportunity to say itBig%20smile).
Second cd - ultra-prog, melody and heaviness combined.

TOT - A sort of return to A but even heavier. Not as prog, though. Enphasis on melody: not strong.

O: More melodic, softer but still heavy. Not as prog but proggier that TOT.

According to these awful and rushed research, we find that the time has come for another "pure-prog-metal" in the veins of IAW, SFAM or the second cd of 6DOIT. Of course, when a band starts doing things predictably, it's no longer a good band. But DT has never done that. It's not that all the heavier albums sound the same or the more melodic do so.  If you compare FII with O, both are a little more straightforward and melodic but couldn't be more different; the same can be said about TOT and Awake, which have not much in common except the enphasis on heavier riffs (actually, TOT is MUCH heavier than A, which is MUCH proggier). IAW and SFAM are both the masterpieces of  the lot but don't sound the same.

What I mean is, the group has a tendency to explore different areas in each album, and never to repeat the "general mood" in two consecutive albums. So I would discard another melodic, straight forward album like O, but I also doubt we'll get a heavy-oriented effort like TOT. I think time has come for the third prog-masterpiece. Big%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smileBig%20smile

Unless Portnoy and Co. get angry like Daniel and start going the nu-metal, mtv-oriented way...

Yeah, right. My fellows will never do that.

Now I just hope they don't ever meet Nickelback in the label meetings... (Big%20smilewtf is a label meeting??)

Do you honestly think that Awake is just as Proggy as FII, The T?

I think Awake is just as proggy as I&W, but at that point they lost their slight hair-band influence that was in the background of Images & Words.

Plus I'm not so sure that SFAM is more prog than Awake. More technical solos does not equal more proggyness in my opinion. I think the reason I dont think SFAM is their best album is because of the overly- long technical solos in the middle of the songs.

I think Awake is a more prog album than I & W as well. I much prefer Awake- it has a better production which to me sounds less sterile than I & W does to me, especially Petrucci's drum sound which I hated on I & W.

SFAM is their masterwork for me and would be considered the most prog due to the concept too, I guess.

I like Dream Theater they (as with most people) got me into Prog-metal with alil help from Opeth but they have offically sold out now, but then it wasn't going to be long before Roadrunner picked up another prog-metal band if you see they are trying to get a foothol in teh power metal market via Dragonforce now they are trying to get a foothold in the prog-market via DT.
Systematic chaos sounds ok but I agree with the otehr guy that sounds like a dragonforce record but may I add the name is a dragonforce album, listen to them they are basically systematic chaos. Kinda like Sikth but second rate.

Maybe he's right. Maybe they've been playing around with us from long ago and Portnoy REALLY is Petrucci and vice-versa..LOL

About the comment, of course I meant what I said (what would be the point in writing things I don't mean?LOL). I'll commit a crime against humanity and try to make a "progressiveness table" of DT albums: (later on I authorize you to seek me and burn me at the stake)

1. I&W
2. SFAM
3. 6DOIT (although I hate The Glass PrisonBig%20smile, but the album is very "prog")
4. WDADU (not about quality but about "progness"... this one started all)
5. A
6. TOT
7. O
8. FII

Now, to prove "progressiveness" isn't everything for me, let me do the same according to what i think are the best albums.

1. SFAM
2. I&W
3. A
4. FII ("A Change of Seasons" should be here... sadly, it's not an album, and the second half with the covers sucks)
5. O
6. TOT
7. 6DOIT (ONLY for the title track... if not it would be LAST)
8. WDADU (ONLY because of Dominici... if not, would've been above 6DOIT)

Don't know what was that all about but when I did my analysis, you can see, for me, "proggier" is not always the same as "better".

Let's just hope DT's next is both proggier and better than O (which is great anyway).

Actually, if a miracle would occur and the next album would surpass even SFAM, I couldn't be happier.

Systematic Chaos should be good (I like the title).  I'm sure Dream Theater will continue to put out good albums.  I really enjoyed Octavarium, and Train of Thought was also good (despite how long it took me to like it).  The 25-minute epic should be great!

By the way, I think The Glass Prison is an awesome song.  That song got me into liking Dream Theater.  DT helped me discover Porcupine Tree, and then got me into progressive rock.  So yes, I really like The Glass Prison!

I agree completely. Bashing would be "the title sucks but the music sucks more" , or even worse, without hearing it, "the title sucks but I'm sure the music will be a disaster". But if we stay only with the first part, "the title sucks", I don't see any problem. And you know what? For me, the title sucks. Big%20smile

If you are so shallow as worry about the album title, why should I take your views on anything else seriouslyConfused.  What exactly is wrong with the title?  If you could come up with a name for a Dream Theater album, what would it be?

I am not a fanboy and I am not defending DT.  It just boggles my mind some of the things that people in this world take seriously or dismiss out of hand with no forethought. You are bashing.  These guys don't take naming an album lightly.  They want to move units.  But you are indicting them as being failures in the creative process of naming an album.  They thought of a name, you think the name sucks.  So their ability to name an album sucks, so they must suck.  A+B=C.  Both of you could obviously do much better and should be recruited as the sixth member of the band in the "Album Naming Department."  Maybe you could play tambourines or triangle as well.  They obviously need the help.

No that's just you assuming that I've drawn those conclusions. I'm just saying I don't like the title. It sounds very stereotypical of a technical metal band to me. I don't see how worrying about an album title is shallow. The title is a sort of important aspect of the album.

If they wish to recruit me for tambourine/album namer I will gladly accept their offer.

One more time let me clarify some terms here:

I don't like it <  Differing tastes
It sucks < Bashing

No you don't. But it would be nice if you got some perspective.  The world is in the crapper on so many levels that I would hope that the name of an album would be far down the list of things that got you all riled up.  If you have a beef with the music after investing your money, then let the world know.  But this is all a little childish.

Being released by Roadrunner dosen't always mean being signed to them, Psychtoic Waltz never had a real proper record label yet there albums were released on a big label.
Im just abit disapointed with DT, I thought they would have gone to somewhere abit more, well civilised. I love some of the bands on Roadrunner but I just can't see them fitting into the same bill as Cradle of Filth, Trivium, Slipknot, Dragonforce etc, the only band they would fit in with are Opeth and even then Opeth are advertised by RR as a death metal band.
Prog/Progressive/Prog-metal is still a dirty word in the wider musical world especially at places like Roadrunner, it just doesn't feel right and something will (i fear) will go wrong.

ConfusedThat's pretty immature, judging a band by the age of its members, don't you think?

By the way people, the album was written BEFORE they signed with Roadrunner, so I don't think the heaviness of the label with have anything to do with the album.

Plus DT are known not to take influence from labels after Falling into Infinity.
I'm sure the band will do whatever they want because their albums are self-produced and would never get themselves into a Record Company situation that forced them into taking a particular musical path.
