No surprise with The Professor way in the lead. As bombastic as some may say some of his (and his band) work may be, the guy is your typical canadian, humble & personalbe. ELP, if memory serves me correct, are often given as a synonym for pomposity & overblown importance ... (not by me, I can only talk about two of their songs - Simple Man, & Karn Evil 9, I think 0/

Peart is really the best drummer there is. Just my opinion, though.

Yawn. Another drum poll where none of my canditates gets the vote. Moerlen would have drummed circles around them, wrapped them up in aluminium foil, put them on the ends of his drumsticks and thus have given them a close experience what drumming is really about.

I sympathise because these drummers do get talked about all the time. you wouldn't get half the votes on a Vander vs. Moerlen poll and they're no less worthy

After watching various concerts (only video) of ELP and Rush I think Palmer is slightly better than Peart. His performance on California Jam 1974 was really outstanding!

I prefer Pearts drum soloing. "anatomy of a drum solo" convinced me of that. Palmer has awesome solos too but Pearts are more varied and thought-through. However, I much prefer Palmer's drumming during songs. It is incredible. Palmer gets my vote.

Peart is a monster tho...

Peart is flawless, his drumming perfectly suits to my tastes in every single moment...

Palmer is great, but there's no comparsion for me.

I'm not a drummer... unless you count air drums and I'm frickin good at that..

Palmer is far more interesing for me to listen to .... and his work on Toccata.. drumming and his creative input into bringing a monster of a work like Ginastera's piano  concerto to life,  put him above anything Peart did in terms of prog music. Not just an walking drum solo highlight.. but a prog musician.

Peart stylistically is the most balanced drummer in prog.He has Brufords control but can work up Palmer's animal like intensity when the mood takes him.Supreme drummer for me.I always vote for Peart in drumming polls despite my ELP allegiance.

Is it just me, or sometimes we just get so off-topic in polls? I mean, there are just two options here.... I know there are better drummers that these two, at least for my taste... but if the poll only has two options to choose from, and not a third one saying "other", why is it so difficult to vote for either one or the other? Peart or Palmer? The poll's name is not "best drummer ever", but Palmer vs Peart.... Now, I may be so out of this world by saying this, but if the question is A vs B, Choose between A or B, how come many people vote C?????

Anyway, I vote for Terry Bozzio.

Re : this poll - I thought the proposition was a person's preference between two percussioners whose last name starts with P. Oh well, some petty people will get P.O.d over polls. LOL . Mind you, I've always found an intriguing way of saving myself time & frustration when it comes to polls or lounges listed herein - I don't bother with them. Then with the time I've saved, I can think up my own limited choice polls to irritate people with unlimited time to spend explaining why they hate such polls. I guess it's how you bait the hook ...

Where can I find this 45 minute solo?  Vander is incredible, and I wanna hear (or better still, see) this!

My vote goes to Peart.  As much as I enjoy Palmer, and as much as I dislike the blind Peart fans, I think Neil deserves this.  However, there's still drummers out there better then Peart.

Carl Palmer because he was a pioneer of progdrumming, and one of the first drummers who used gongs, timps, bells and electronic percussion all in one.
 
Peart specialized progdrumming, but without Palmer no Peart.
Peart is more steady and maybe he has a better technique but is too clinical for my ears and not so diverse as Palmer.
 
In short Peart is maybe a better 'drummer' (certainly a better teamplayer, and better songplayer) but was never so creative as Palmer.
Oh, and Palmer is certainly a better soloist imo.

Sorry Jeremy, you must be on a bender. Without Gene Krupa, no Neil Peart. Check out Peart's Anatomy of a Drum Solo. He mentions Krupa, Baker, Mitch Mitchell, but no Palmer. And as far as judging a drummer's talent as somehow measured by the more percussion instruments used, the better the drummer, well ... give me Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck Quartet among others) with the usual basic kit of his day over Palmer any day. Or if that's your main criteria - check out John Weathers playing Glockenspiel.

And finally, just to ensure this is not taken as an attack on Palmer, I think most of the drummers such as Peart, Palmer et al, would say they still stand in awe of the "old time" jazz drummers.

And as far as judging a drummer's talent as somehow measured by the more percussion instruments used, the better the drummer, well ... give me Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck Quartet among others) with the usual basic kit of his day over Palmer any day. Or if that's your main criteria - check out John Weathers playing Glockenspiel.

What I mean with without Palmer no Peart is that Palmer made the way clear for progdrumming in a powertrio (as Rush). I'm sure Peart was influenced by him. I don't judge drummers becuase of the size of their drumkit (i myself like more the basic kits of bruford and bonham) I say that Palmer set a standard for progdrumming including megakits with all the various percussion instruments and because of that he influenced Peart (who on his part influenced Portnoy, also a 'super' progdrummer with a megakit).

For progdrumming, I would probably suggest Ginger Baker. Jazz training, plus the original power trio, plus self-indulgence (before the dam broke, and musicians totally forgot about the audience). Blues, Pop, some blues & jazz, & some would hint hint at psych & prog - ex. White Room, not extravagant or complex melody-wise, but lyrical content showed a progression beyond the standard of the day. I do agree with you, though, on the number of pieces in a kit. Some drummers, as the two you mention, are better drummers than some "mega-kit" kiddies of today. They've looked at Peart & Palmer & fallen in the trap of thinking that's where P & P's talents reside. In case there some huge Triumph fans out there, let me say that this is ust an opinion & not one that I would kill for, so here goes - Gil Levine had a big kit for a hard rock drummer, but any review of Triumph's rhythm section described them as "leaden", bar band competent, & from my listening overdrummed.

BTW, I dont hate Rush, I just dont think they are that great. in the day, they were a second tier or backup band to the big boys.

Palmer did stand in awe of Buddy Rich although Rich had a certain amount of respect for Carl's abilities as well.

Well they were/are certainly MUCH bigger than most bands you could mention,and certainly had a longer shelf-life. That remark is just plain silly.
"In the day" their albums hit the Top 5 in the main album chart both in the US and in the UK. Popularity doesnt always equate with quality, but for a "cult" band from Canada with a vocalist that is very much an aquired taste, I would say that is pretty phenomenal, wouldnt you? From Allmusic:

Well, in the circles I moved in Rush were regarded as a hard rock band and definitely not as a prog band. So maybe they were big, but among proggers they were rated as 2nd class, at least here in Germany. And don't tell me it wasn't so, Tony; I experienced it first hand. Maybe they did sell big, but NOT as a prog act.

My two cents - for the most part, Rush were considered hard rock or even heavy metal amongst my crowd.Not your typical hard rock or metal, but still in those styles. Prog at the time, in the late 70s brought to mind bands like Genesis, Gentle Giant, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd & such. Classical influences. long suites, complex tempos, concept albums - in essense rock with pretensions (whether you see thast as good or bad).
The question of first tier or second is harder. In music terms, they are arguably the following that are considered top tier - Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Led Zep, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Eagles. More modern acts that may join someday - U2, the Police, Nirvana, Pearl jam. The first five are usually out of each of argument's range. The rest are sometimes said to be the next tier along with The Who, The Clash, Black Sabbath, Genesis.  But even then any discussion soon becomes pointless as considerations such as sales, influence, career arc etc, make it impossible to really state unequivocally who's best better or good. An acquaintance of mine says if someone wants to argue, present the only objective measure is sales. He hates Britney Spears & loves a wide number of lesser selling bands, but just figures any arguing of the point is useless & a waste of time.

I agree that CP and NP were very in awe of jazz drummers but Neil Peart actually does mention Carl Palmer as being an influence in "Anatomy of a drum solo".

Palmer by a country mile!

Peart's drumming went downhill as Rush's music became less challenging. His style is like a woman's techniqie and moves his whole arms with very little wrist control. See a video of the Corr's drummer or Karen Carpenter and you'll see what I mean!

people have finally opened their ears and seen for all Rush's reknown.. it simply is child's play compared to ELP and it's wildly complex and difficult music.  Palmer was a creative force behind it.

maybe don't know or forget that is often isn't Peart who is the 'king' of prog drumming but the original master

That last comment in Micky's last post is quite funny. Carl could rip up a snare like no one else (in prog) although Ivan put forward an interesting view on another thread that his strength was on the bass drum.I would still contend though that Peart is a more complete drummer..especially when comparing his tom tom work and bass drum work next to Carl's. (symbal work is about equal)

Palmer is technically more advanced than Peart & that's probably due to his classical training. Peart's a great self taught drummer but not in Palmer's league technically.
 
Also, if you watch or listen to a Peart solo it's just all snare and cymbals. Palmer hits everything around him.

Hmm, you and I didn't see the same solos from Peart, obviously... I've been playing drums since I was 10 and I'm 32 (you do the math), so I know what I'm talking about and believe me, it's far from being just 'snare and cymbals'.  Oh yeah, right, his drumset is just for show...Confused

I have to disagree.  It all depends on what we want and like in a drummer (drummer too here!).  For example, people freak out over John Bonham, and I think he was really ordinary.  I'd take Ian Paice over Bonham any day.  Even as drummers, we can't help but let our tastes get in the way of what we judge to be a good drummer.  Same thing goes for guitarists : John Petrucci might be an extremely skilled and able player, but I prefer Andrew Latimer by a million miles, because he always sounds inspired and lets his guitar sing and cry... 
 
It all depends on what you look for in a player...
