Until today, whenever I was at the forums default page, below the list of all the forums there appeared a short list of the most recent posts.  Today it has vanished!

I found this feature really useful but I'm at a loss how to get it back.  Can anyone help...?

It's not there, but I didn't miss it until you mentioned it. I always use the Active Topics option, to see what was going on in the last x hours.

I think they decided to remove it because now PA user have to go through

the threads to get to the topic, Like VR: 4, to post.

This allows more users to see threads that dont get a lot popularity and responses.

Makes Sense.  Creates more exposure for more threads.

Yeah I noticed a lot more threads and have posted in them. I wouldn't have noticed if I could have just gone to the thread I originally wanted to go to.
