As I reflect on the year 2006 in terms of new progressive music that was released, I'm a bit underwhelmed (as is how I voted in a poll pertaining to this same subject last week). The new Flower Kings, Frost*, and the new Saga stand out; but, when I think if this past year, I think of the old bands that I've discovered through either this site, or a buddy of mine.
Two bands come to mind: Gabriel era Genesis and Camel. I was a bit skeptical with the Gabriel-led Genesis because of all the pageantry involved--I just found it a bit goofy. Hearing everyone going on and on about Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound, I thought it was time to expand a bit...AND WAS I BLOWN AWAY!!!! I then went out and bought up the rest of Gensis' discography, with the purchase just today of Genesis Live to round out my collection. Just awesome stuff. And then there's Camel. Quickly becoming one of my favorites. I've bought up remasters of Mirage, Moonmadness, and The Snowgoose. I've also picked up Stationary Traveler, A Nod And A Wink, and Ran Dances. I'm awaiting Breathless, A Live Record, Never Let Go, and received Coming Of Age today (this one has really overtaken me). Simply breathtaking!! I've also picked up a lot of King Crimson; but, just hasn't latched onto like I have Genesis and Camel. So, my question is instead of focusing on new bands or music we discovered, are there any older bands that have really made an impact on you this year? E -------------

I had quite the opposite experience this year. Discovering old prog is what I did in 2005 (though I did my fair share of it this year). The majority of prog I listen to now I discovered this year, mostly on this site. If not I heard a song by an artist I didn't notice on here and then found out they were on the site.

This year was actually the first time in my life I have listened to progressive music. I never really listened to music very seriously until a few friends made me get stoned and watch Pink Floyd: Live in Pompeii. Echoes blew my mind, and afterwards I downloaded it and started getting into Pink Floyd. A bit later a guy I met was raving about Radiohead so I bought OK Computer. A few amazon.com "Listmania" lists later and I had learned what progressive rock was. So, the list of old bands I have gotten into this year is huge: Genesis: Amazingly good
Yes: Have only heard Close to the Edge and Relayer and think they're a little overrated but still pretty awesome
King Crimson: Sinfield and Wetton eras = excellent
Rush: Blew me away at first and couldn't stop listeneing to them, but by now I'm a little sick of it. Although, lately I have enjoyed some of their albums I initially dismissed (mostly their 80s ones)
Camel: Only heard The Snow Goose, but it rules
Gentle Giant: Same deal as Rush. After 3 weeks of saturation I got really sick of them.
Van Der Graaf Generator: H to HE is amazing, Pawn Hearts is taking some work to get into
Pink Floyd: Great band but some of the most grossly overrated albums of all time (Dark Side, The Wall).
Marillion: Fish era is great. I love Rothery's guitar style
Emerson, Lake and Palmer: Tarkus is pretty cool, if a bit cheesy
I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them right now.

Check out Moonmadness. It's wicked good. As for the live stuff, I just got Coming Of Age in the mail today and it's amazing so far. Can't begin to tell you how much I'm enjoying it. <<Marillion: Fish era is great. I love Rothery's guitar style>> I enjoy both eras; but, I will always push the Hogarth era just a wee bit more. For many reasons, but primarily for the simple fact that Brave is the best disc I own. E -------------

| I only specified Fish era because I haven't listened to any Hogarth era Marillion yet. I'm slowly working my way through their discography, and I'm sure I'll like the Hogarth era just as much as Fish, from what I've heard. |

I just really started getting into prog a year or two ago, so I've made many awesome discoveries since then. My favorites of 2006 include Jethro Tull and Hogarth-era Marillion, but I also was pleasantly surprised with bands like Magma, PFM, and Le Orme. I've been also getting into Dream Theater, Taal, Ozric Tentacles, Gentle Giant, Adrian Belew, Peter Gabriel, and much more as well but my favorite discovery of this year has to be the Flower Kings. What an amazing band! My favorite bands are probably Rush, The Flower Kings, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, and Marillion, though I definitely really like bands like ELP, Taal, Tangerine Dream and others nearly as much. The only things that slightly puzzle me (a bit off-topic but related to my TFK discoveries) are all The Flower Kings and Hogarth-era Marillion disapproval there can be sometimes, because both are really mindblowing when you give them the chance! "Paradox Hotel" by the Flower Kings has become one of my favorite releases ever. So I guess I've had a mix of both uncovering newer and older material but I'm definitely satisfied with what I've heard this year, even if it wasn't all released this year. |

Good question. I got into prog in 2005, but I only recently started appreciating some major bands. It is the case with YES and Genesis, for example. My strategy usually is to take a classic band's albums in chronological order and save their maturity issues for the end, but it went wrong this time. This suddenly changed when I switched the approach and listened CTTE and SEBTP; I was enlighted and I also started liking their other albums, a fact that I count as one of my best achievements this year.
When approaching genres that I never related to before, I go for what seems to be the highlights - either by looking for the ratings in the PA or by friends' reccomendations. This year it's the case with jazzrock: Brand X and Weather Report from my best friend's collection and Mahavishnu Orchestra from the PA. Next year it'll be modern prog and maybe some progmetal.
Oh, I don't want to forget mentioning I just got into Wetton era Crimson. I'm so Red...  ------------- "PA's own GI Joe!"

Thanks to PA I get the opportunity to discover and re-discover some bands that I left aside looking for new music and bands... So this year... Let me remember... 1. I had a serious return to Zeuhl roots 'cos I found on PA an excellent band named ESKATON... wow!! what a trip with 4 Visions... And thanks to a friend I get two Eider Stellaire albums and one by Koenjihyakkei ... So this discovery made me return to listen some amazing albums by Magma, Ruins, Runaway Totem, Potemkine, Univeria Zekt, Weidorje, Bondage Fruit, Happy Family and Dün... 2. Same with Kraut. For some long months I didn't heard nothing about Kraut but I re-discover some Cosmic Jokers, Guru Guru, Dom And Agitation Free... great stuff again and it sounds better while years pass... 3. Throug PA I discover a band named It's A Beautiful Day... Finally I get their first album and it's surprisingly amazing... The year: 1969... That's the most remarkable... Oh, and of course the returning of Kansas and Los Jaivas to my CD player... ------------- ... E N E L B U N K E R... |

This year I discovered and was highly impressed by Camel (Moonmadness, Snowgoose), Steve Hackett (Voyage of the Acolyte), Jethro Tull (Heavy Horses), Caravan (In the Land of Gray and Pink), Roger Waters (The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking), Pink Floyd (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn), and others I don't remember right now. I mean I discovered those recordings, not those artists.
"New" and "almost new" bands I discovered in 2006: Porcupine tree (In Absentia, Deadwing), Radiohead (Amnesiac), The Mars Volta (Amputechture), and......I don't remember.....I'll edit it later to complete it.

This year I started with Italian prog, with Banco, Locanda and Premiata, so I guess that would be my old discovery.

And to be honoust, I have been eyeing some 2006 six stuff, but I was so impressed with the old stuff that I didn't other to get something new so far. Great that you discovered Harmonium and that you like it . I grew up with this music in the seventies in Montreal. They were huge in Quebec and Canada, but I did not know at all that Harmonium did go over the ocean or across the border. It's really fun to know that several people in Europe ( Finland etc...) and in United States know Harmonium. This group from the Province of Quebec did stand the test of time. They are part of the history of music. Harmonium deserved to be known all around the world. ------------- C'est la vie |

There were many,but for me it was albums like "Grave new world" from a genre that's not my favourite by any means,and this record from the STRAWBS just blew me away.Another was "If i could do it all over again,i'd do it all over you" from CARAVAN,amazing record.MUSEO ROSENBACH is another one,with the mellotron and heaviness from this great Italian band.Like i said though,there were many. ------------- "The wind is slowly tearing her apart" "Sad Rain" ANEKDOTEN |

Heh, I started listening to prog in around 1988 or so, and I STILL am discovering great 70's bands I hadn't heard before (or even heard of) Harmonium being the most recent example that has popped up in this thread. Also, Comus was a big one for me along with the Refugee album. Prog Archives has had a big hand in expanding my awareness of prog both old and new. As for 2006, I have only picked up a few things. The best by far to my ears is LuxAde by La Maschera Di Cera (but I'm an Italian prog nut), and Si Parte 1 from Nemo. Other good ones were Paradox Hotel (Flower Kings), and A place In the Queue (Tangent). I have the latest Pain Of Salvation, but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I try to spread out my purchases over old and new stuff. There is so much of both I haven't heard yet that I really want to keep up with both. ../Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=1746 - |
