IV.....it was an iconic album on its release and it remains so to this day.

I was absolutely bowled over when I first heard it,almost speechless with joy.

One of the greatest albums of all time....though,of course, not Prog...

I voted for I, cause I've known it for so long and I still can't stop loving it - it has such a unique charm... However, Presence is also a favourite, excellent in a different way, as it's a very polished and daring work, probably the proggiest of them all (since we're on PA, you know Tongue). I think by the time they recorded Presence they had bettered their instrumental skills considerably and they put much thought into writing interesting and diverse compositions. "Achilles' Last Stand" is a monster (my favourite LZ track), "Tea for One" is more heartbreaking than a ton of depressed blues players from the Mississippi Delta, and generally speaking every song has its distinct personality. Too bad In through the Outdoor wasn't as inspired and then it all ended.

III - I love the Folk influence on  many of the numbers ("That's The Way"; "Gallows Pole"; "Tangerine") plus it has one of my favourite Zep tracks - "Since I've Been Loving You" - one awesome bluesy masterpiece.

I

I remember putting my father's vinyl of that on, and I remember my jaw hitting the floor. I was 15 years old I think, and I wasn't all that familiar with Zep at that point in my life.

Special mention for III mostly due to Since I've Been Loving You, possibly my favorite Zep song.

Houses of the Holy! Closely followed by IV.

Led Zeppelin IV is one of the best albums ever to have been created IMO, so that's where my vote goes too. If I could make multiple choices I would also include I, Physical Grafity and Presence

But the live albums totally blows everything they made in a studio away. Live is where they were the real Gods of Rock. Unfortunatly they only released 2 official live albums and of course the majestic 2-disc DVD.

Presence!

Achilles Last Stand is one of the greatest songs ever. The intense drumming, the climactic builds, and the GUITAR SOLO!!!!!

Plus, "m-mm-mmonkey off my back"

After that, probably Physical Graffiti tied with II and then III tied with IV and Houses of the Holy.

I voted for Houses of the Holy, which is the album where they took a seriously Prog-related direction to their album sound.  Physical Graffiti comes really close to Houses  as an album I like (in fact, sometimes I claim PG as my fave), and not far behind is In Through the Out Door and Presence.  The first four are very good too.

They've all (except for Coda which has a different story behind it) been favourites at one time (particularly when I was in my teens).

I voted IV, but now I want to vote III, and I suspect in a few minutes I'll want to vote for Houses. They're simply all amazing - impossible to rank, if you ask me.

I, for one, am really happy to see that LZII is not getting much support.

between 3, 4 is my choice

PG, I always had difficulty of considering it as a full blown album since it is a collection of tracks ranging from 69 to 75, with only a few specially written for this release.

And I can't help but thinking thatall of the tracks that were rejected for the previous albums and salvaged here are that good.

And I can't help but thinking that all of the tracks that were rejected for the previous albums and salvaged here are that good.

Since my review was edited....again.....let me re-clarify...

The majority of the songs on Physical Graffiti (and by far the strongest material) was new.   "Custard Pie", "In My Time Of Dying", "Trampled Underfoot", "Kashmir", "In The Light", "Ten Years Gone", "The Wanton Song and "Sick Again" were recorded in 1974.

They found themselves with 53:24 of strong new material...too much for a single disc.

Apparently, the same thing had occurred during the sessions for the previous two albums, with very good material being shelved due to time constraints.

The band decided to expand the new album to a double album by including some of this material.

Thus, “Night Flight", "Boogie with Stu" and "Down by the Seaside" recorded in 1971 during the sessions for the untitled fourth album and "The Rover", "Black Country Woman" and "Houses of the Holy" recorded in 1972 during the sessions for Houses Of The Holy were re-mixed and overdubbed in order to fit in with the newer material.   (When one considers that these 6 songs are outtakes from two of the greatest albums in rock history, it puts their quality into perspective.)

Finally, a brief acoustic guitar interlude titled "Bron-Yr-Aur", which was begun in 1970 during the sessions for their third album was completed by Page and included, primarily because Page wanted to include it in the still-unfinished concert movie they were working on…

Them’s the facts.

Nasty words Mr Chantraine. LZ II is a masterpiece, not unlike Deep Purple's "In Rock", or more like "Machine Head". An absolute classic!

The commercial success of some tunes have only assisted Prog awareness, not unlike tunes of Yes, Genesis, Mike Oldfield on airplay. I voted for another album, but not at the expense of this one
which gets the 5 star treatment anyway.

LZ's first six albums are equally loved and treasured with PG ending the line of ultimate satisfaction. After that there were some nice tunes, often outtakes released, but no more classic albums.

no option for "all of the above"??LOL   having followed Led Zep avidly since first hearing LZ1 in '69 every subsequent release was savoured with breathless anticipation by myself, i appreciated every twist and turn the band made in their recordings, even LZ3 is still one of my favourites despite the heavy rock detractors - you never knew what they were going to do next - i even applauded their efforts on "Houses of the Holy" especially "that reggae track" and "Hats Off" and my enthusiasm for the band is still undiminished after all these years, even up to their last album "In Through the Out Door" which was poorly received by many, though i must agree this was not their best album, but still knocked the socks off most stuff around at the time. Led Zep raised the bar very very high and even they struggled to reach it towards the end, but they have more than made up for that with some brilliant music in the years since then - rock on guys!!Thumbs Up

Late answer... I only have The Song Remains the Same, so I don't know any live version of "Achilles" (except the fragment wonderfully played by Dream Theater on A Change of Seasons of course Smile). I'll probably try to track it down one of these days, cause I really LOVE that track.
Reading through the thread, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one rating Presence so highly - some others seem to see it as a bold, acomplished work too. After the abundance of two-star reviews it has been getting on PA lately, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me... Hopefully I am not lost. Tongue

OH NOOO!!! I just clicked on IV but as a matter of fact II is the one!!! Heard "Whole Lotta Love" at a friends place, was blown away and had to have the album - bought every LZ-album from then on as soon as they were on the shelves. I am not ashamed to admit that I love (almost) every single one, although they made it a bit difficult for me with "Coda".

i like this statement, i also think Zepp is a live band 100%. HtWWW is better (the sound, the production, the voice, the instruments, the shape, the creativity) than any other live concert of theirs with just one exception - it doesn't have the "Stairway to Heaven" from "The Song Remains the Same" concert/movie.

sorry for not seeing your answer
yes the double DVD (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=13529) contains the knebworth 1979 live version of "achilles' last stand" which is - i think - one of the greatest highlights of their career and of rock music. and about "presence" you should be more relaxed: how much do these 2 star reviews count in front of both page and plant saying "presence" is their favourite and probably their best, also?...

Physical Graffitti would have made a PERFECT single album if it had only kept the top songs.... but why? Just skip the ones you don't like, i'm happy for every song i get to hear by the band. I can't understand why it took me so long for me to realise how great they were.

I have heard all from III up to Graffitti, and i love IV the most. It has the most perfect songs, and Houses of the holy, while super duper great, has "the Grunge"... which is pretty lame. :)

Didn't vote, though, i know how some people get upset when you do that without having heard it all (or at least most of it)

I can think of very few bad tracks on PG, 'Boogie With Stu' comes to mind but that's really about it.. even the 'lesser' cuts have good moments; 'Down By the Seaside' has an awesome jam in the middle, and don't tell me you don't like 'In My Time..'  Wink

Well, i kinda dislike In the Light. I don't know what it is, it's doesn't gel with me, and black country woman is good, but not much more. Boogie with stu is good and fun, the Wanton song can be irritating, but it's not really bad either.
