Can anyone recommend any albums where I can find intelligent, surprising, well thought and devised vocal lines? Just in case, I'm already familiar with any Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Conception and Pain of Salvation. It doesn't have to be necessarily prog. Thank you so much. |

Before any recommendation can be given - do vocal lines of the bands that you mentionned meet your criteria and description in your opinion???

Dream Theater: When Dream and Day Unite, Images and Words, Awake, A Change of Seasons.
Fates Warning: The Spectre Within, Awaken the Guardian.
Symphony X: Most of their stuff, but mainly Twilight in Olympus and V.

I would not include Pain of Salvation on the list, but I'm aware of the fact that many consider their vocal lines to meet the criteria. I mentioned their name in case anyone felt they should be recommended.
Am I wrong to think you don't agree with all this?
Anyway, all recommendations are welcome. I mean, you can recommend anything you believe meets the criteria, whether it has something to do with the bands I mentioned or not. The main reason I mentioned those bands is I already know all of their works and I thought that somebody might consider them worthy of a recommendation (in which case I would have been recommended albums I already knew).

^^^The thing is that I do not really like much of the mentionned band, except for Pain of Salvation, whose vocal lines however I find to be nothing special, but as long as you mentionned these two particular albums by Fates Warning (IMO the best they ever done), I think I understand what kind of vocal lines you are looking for. I would definitely recommend you solo album by John Arch to start with. Gentle Giant is also highly recommended. You might find Deus Ex Machina quite interesting. First album by Canadian band Hamadryad "Conservation of Mass", The Mars Volta, Italian band Areknames, and if you look for generaly good vocals you have to start to dig deep into Italian Symphonic Progressive. Hope above helps.
