Come on.  Be honest.  Am I the only person who learned to appreciate Prog after smoking weed?  I don't do it anymore, but I did gain an appreciation for art.Wink

It's never done owt for me. People sometimes assume I must be a drug user because of the style of my writing/art and the music I listen to, but I've never found any drugs that genuinely heighten my appreciation of anything artistic. The best art carries itself just fine and doesn't need some kind of chemical boost.

Well, in the beginning there was a certain leafy substance around. The thing is, I appreciate it even more now that I am completely intoxicant free.

You have a user name. Wink

Anyway, of course you aren't alone, though I doubt if we can say that it's a direct "cause and effect" correlation.

Good classic prog is good on its own (or else it would be no good), and not all 70s prog fans were "heads."

Most were, though, in my experience.

I learned to appreciate Prog before smoking weed, but it didn't really click until I did, a month or so later.

I appreciate great art and music without the use of any sort of drug. I have not used or tried them and I don't plan to. I'm glad it helps you but I prefer to keep my mind clean and to be high on life.

Well, I discovered prog thanks to it so thanks to it my view of what is music changed for the better. I don't do it anymore and, to be honest, I didn't used it that many times to begin with (I can count them with my fingers).  I remember listening to Gong's You... wow. I'll never look/hear that album the same way again.

Although I'm sure some people may have come to appreciate prog rock from herbal help, I was first introduced to prog when I was 8 years old, therefore being to young to associate herb with prog.Big smileLOL

My anti stance is not from political correctness. It is from experience. I could break it down for you, and not in a 'just say no' way. I lived the life of illusion. I can't tell you how grateful I am that it's over.

I was into prog long before I ever tried pot.  Granted, pot and prog are an amazing combination, but it's not necessary.

This link appears to be turning in to rehab.

There is no doubt that prog musuc can make a great evening when smoking with your friends.  As with any drug you can enjoy it socially with friends or it can take over your life.  Just remember that you don't "need" it and use it wisely.

Don't smoke, surely will never, but I've had about dozens of miraculous experiences from fantastic albums - plus I can appreciate, in ways, the art.

Only started drinking when I was 18, im 20 now, and i dont drink very often, im at college and only drink with my friends on weekends, people who drink alot drink far more than once or twice a week.

Almost every adult i know drinks EVERy night, perhaps not to a drunken state but they sure do drink ALOT.

Im also very naturally ecstatic and dont need alot to get me really excited and crazy.  I just love enjoying life to the fullest, and perhaps one day i will try some different drugs, but thats not on my list right now because i feel it will detract me from my very positive state of mind!

I discovered prog before being introduced to Cannabis. It certainly does make music more "resounding" and intense. However, I enjoy it just as much whilst not stoned.

There must have been somewhere in the region of 5000 threads relating to drugs and prog over the past few years, and they all have the same outcome Sleepy

Behold the perils of decadence! Big smile
I've never tried it, it would seem completely pointless to do it. I think some people may have a bit too much time and money on their hands, honestly.
Plus, if you want to get stoned, go ahead, but trying to make up justifications for it like "it helps me appreciate art better" is hilarious. Does it miraculously decode artistic languages, does it unravel subtle meanings of the piece of art you're contemplating? I dare to doubt that. Of course, it can make you feel special things while immersing in contemplation, but that doesn't mean any "enlightenment" is involved. I believe the only way to efficiently alter reality is through the tools of reason, and not the momentary craft of illusions.

I've never had any sort of drug beyond Caffiene.

On a semi-related note, f*** your avatar. It's things like that that are ruining American politics.

Having too many Christians with too much political influence is more likely the cause of that.

I got into prog at a time in my life when weed wasn't a part of it whatsoever. Occasionally I smoke nowadays and I enjoy listening to some albums high, especially my favorites that I have history with.

HA ha ha ha ha!!  To answer your questions, YES.  I never really understood art until I got high and saw what I had to look for.  I am not trying to justify myself, but It is what happened to me and I will not deny myself.  Be careful when you impose your thoughts if you haven't tried it.  Besides, I do find prog better sober, but weed opened the door.  Also, people have been getting high for a long time.  Those that were considered wise back in the day got together to discuss politics while smoking opium(which is a lot worse than weed cause it kills) and look where we are today.Wink

bah... anyone who needs pot to appreciate art.. is without hope LOL

seriously though...  with hindsight of 10 years since I last fired one up before I got married (a gift to myself..who like the immortal Stonewall Jackson and alcohol... I gave it up because I loved it so much).  It's not like LSD or anything like that... it just made me laugh and took the edge off a being a very shy person.  It did nothing for auditory stimulation.  Crap still sounded like crap.. and art..was still art.Wink

Changing your thought patron by using some kind of drug can work as a chamanic experience. I smoke like 2 weed cigars a year. Once, I was listening to a U.K. album and the results were fantastic indeed. But, I have friends that smoke regulary and their lives are kind of ruined, so I keep a safe distance. Chaman / wizards days are over, and few people have the selfawareness necessary to enjoy the experience without getting lost in it. Most of the times, grass smokers are just too enthusiatic and little concentrated. As a writter wannabe, I can't allow myself to loose focus.
