I'm joining: hell, I've wept like a baby listening to Script For a Jester's Tear and Misplaced Childhood, several VdGG songs, etc.

I also have silly romantic thoughts about Helen.

Plus, I write poetry.

Top that, bitch.

The "Silly Romanticist Club" shall dream about destroying you. But, could you kidnap our girls first, that would make destroying you SO much more romantic, and then we save them and slip of into the sunset.

Well, I took it for granted you would want in. Your thoughts of Helen qualify, you're in.

I qualify becuase of the silly and romantic Concept Album I wrote for Hope, sigh...
I need to finish writing the keyboard/viola parts to it so we can RECORD it! Then, when she turns 16 and I ask her out, and she says yes (which she will) I can shyly say, I wrote this album for you. She will listen to it, be freaked out a little, then realize it is the sweetest, most romantic thing anyone has done for her and be forced to fall in love with me. Then, I can write songs in my old age about enduring love while touring with the latest Prog supergroups!

The acid of love Alex, the acid of love...

Missionaries Without Monasterys will be the most pwnish Prog Supergroup I will ever be in, and I will be in many, mark my words. And through it all I will be married to Hope, and have a wonderfully talented daughter named Marucha. IT WILL HAPPEN!

I've noticed myself slipping towards naivety more these days, due to not so recent liking/more recent talking to of a certain girlEmbarrassed
they tend to do that, then you slip into a false sense of "hey maybe this is possible", and finally they whip out the "oh I had no idea" and act like liking them is betraying them, and then you can't stand to look at them for the next month....at least I'm currently in the more pleasant part of the cycle (if you can call it that)

Yes, I'm bitter, what of it, at least I'm not whining how "no girl likes me" because I don't give much of a sh*t anymore so Big smile

Well, if you stay friends for a while, things could change.

You know what's weird? Helen notices me more ever since I asked her out.

Smile I'm in.

I have silly, romantic, outdated notions about the timeless importance of love, honour, respect, equality, tolerance, empathy, etc.

I don't like "slasher" or "shoot 'em up" flics -- I like period costume dramas. (In many of my favourite movies, NO ONE gets shot!)

I been known to like slow, beautiful romantic prog songs with lots of acoustic guitar, flute, viokin, etc. (The stuff many here dismiss as "filler.") I even like "More Fool Me."

Some of my favourite Victorian novelists are -- gasp! -- WOMEN!

I like flowers, laughing brooks and little birdies -- I think smiling babies are cute.

My favourite song on Relayer is "To Be Over." On Lizard, it is "Lady of the Dancing Water."

I've never had a one-night stand, and if I took a girl out on a second date, it meant I liked her.

I don't like contact sports, and I've never been in a strip club. (I'd be embarrassed, and I think they are degrading to both women and men.)

Bands with names that refer to death, corpses, evisceration, torture, necrophilia, blood, guts, etc, repel me.

I'm a pretty good cook.

Many of my bosses and co-workers have been women, and I have no problem with that.

I live in an area where almost all the red-blooded males hunt, but I've never hunted. (I've never been hungry enough.)

I drive a small car, and walk to work.

I can understand poetry.

I have never punched anyone.

In short, I am hopeless.Unhappy

But I can chop wood, and I LOVE motorcycles! Big smile

Okay, I confess, I'm a romantic in denial (I guess no more)

I believe in equality and such and such, as Peter mentioned, I find pornography and strip clubs as blatant exploitation and degredation of women, I don't want sex until marriage (I know that's really Shocked) I also believe love should be based off of personality and compatibility and shouldn't be merely skin deep.....

I've yet to find anyone who wants to put up with this crap thoughOuch

Script For A Jesters Tear was the story of my life when it came out in 1983 (23 years ago...); hopelessly infatuated with a girl at the time (who has since become one of my longest standing close friends), I'd spend long hours gazing out of a window in a winsome manner - I like to think this was sheer romanticism, but I was a 19 year old male, so I suspect there may have been other elements at work...

I like to think I'm a bit of a romantic, and what used to be referred to as a "new-man".

I'm a pretty good cook, respect and love my wife, family and friends (indeed, am unafraid to use the word "love"), can get all dewey eyed at a nice sunset, loved 'Brokeback Mountain', I think 'Something' by The Beatles is the greatest love song ever (and probably the most perfect song ever written) - like Peter, I've never been to a strip club (and actually feel sorry for those who work in them, and pity those who frequent them), have never punched anyone, love the so called 'filler' tracks on prog albums, like "Harlequin" and "For Absent Friends" (but not More fool me - bleagh), I love our feathered and furry friends (although smiling babies make me suspicious... - what exactly are they smiling about?)...

However - I do quite like violent movies (so long as they're well made)

unfortunately i am a bit of an old cynic regarding matters of the heart, though i have always believed society/media  puts too much emphasis on expecting everyone to be the perfect couple with 2.5 children, snuggling up with the papers and tea in bed on a Sunday morning - somewhat detached from the real world judging by the Jeremy Kyle show, for instance! Though i am very romantic about the natural world, i love watching wildlife programs, appreciate romantic art and music, it's all about escapism and fantasy. Smile

I find today's youth, on the whole, to be rabidly homophobic. Thumbs Down

They are perhaps less racist that previous generationsClap, but the pendulum has really swung backward as far as accepting or even tolerating  homosexuality goes. They use the word "gay" when they really want to insult one another, tease mercilessly about it (many youth suicides result from this), and have even made "gay" into a generic put down, meaning "lame, stupid," etc. (I really hate to hear the word used that way.Angry) I think the emergence of HIV/AIDS, and its initial perception as a "gay disease," was largely responsible for this shift in attitude.

ConfusedRe the inquiry about the difference between "romanticism" and "romantism," the first is a word (the meaning is easily found in a dictionary), and the second is not. (It is the first, mis-spelled.) Geek

@Peter
I totally agree on what you said about these recent social behaviours. They make me get worried, these days.

I assumed there is an "ism" for "romantic" in English, as there is for "romanticist".
Romanticism is a cultural movement from the past, pretty well sumarised here ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism ), and a romanticist is someone belonging to that movement. "Romantic" is a person who likes flowers, music, is attentive to emotions, blah-blah; it's just a popular notion, derived from the fact that 1. "romanticism" is actually "romantism" in most european languages and 2. "romantic" is (just a soap-)version of the actual meaning of "Romanticism". The "Romanticism/t" word was actually later created in order to avoid confusion with the meaning of "romantic" in English (also in european languages "romantic" means someone belonging to what we call "Romantism" and youy call "Romanticism"). is that clear? WackoLOL

In Finnish the word 'romantiikka' is used both for the artistic movement and the thing we should be talking about here.

That's partially my reasoning, as I am one too (I have many other reasons as well from a more logical standpoint) , though I can tell by most of my peers around me that that doesn't really stop any of them (though they're not too religious)

Jim, regarding Brokeback Mountain, I probably would have thrown up during it. BUT, I am like that with any "love story" movie....again, though I don't agree with homosexuality, I am not in fear of it in any way...As Voltaire sort of said regarding a totally different issue, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," only instead of speech and what not you sub whatever it was I was just talking about I don't rememberTongue

You're not the only one to note this, it's sad but true.

I've especially noted that they "tease mercilessly about it", not only each other. I have experienced immature kids using Skype to call strangers just to insult them.

I don't think I am, really.

I'm all for the non-degradation of women and all that junk and I'm sincere in my feeling (when it's not hungry). I like nature.

But I have punched people and I enjoy shooting movies. I eat meat raw and I hunt with my own blood and bare hands.

Are you grownup enough to understand those distinctions?

Anyway, what is up with your "cowboy fun?"

What if they were in love? (As, I believe, is the premise.)

It is just the sex that makes you hate, but the sexual realm does not totally define us as people. There is more to us than what we do in bed, with another consenting adult, and such people don't just "decide" to "go" gay -- they are gay all along.

BTW, straight people in love have sex too, and find it to be "fun," and pleasurable.

But it does not define them, or sum them up as humans. They could be "saints," psychos, or anything in between.

Would you ban all divorce? That will make for a lot of kids being raised in some very happy homes, all right!

Ditch your 2000 year old book of myths, think it through, and grow up. You and society are not threatened. (See ancient Greece and Rome.)

I think what he was getting at (although worded a bit differently) is that though they may have been in love, they shouldn't abandon all previously made responsibilities for it. And about the divorce thing: do you really think banning divorce would make kids miserable? DIVORCE ALREADY DOES! My parents are divorced, and it's always a debacle going to my dad's house, they always talk badly about each other and (if you couldn't tell from some of my other posts) it's left me very psychologically messed up. And I'm not against persecution for anyone no matter what they do (except maybe serial murder and such), including gay people. Now, I  a) see it immoral for myself to do it and b) am personally repulsed by the thought of commiting such an action myself (because I'm hetero, i.e. I don't think I could "go gay" as you said before). HOWEVER, my morals are for myself and only myself, enforcing them upon others is a violation of their freedom. So, as such, whilst I don't exactly advocate homosexuality, I don't think homosexuals don't deserve the mocking, discrimination, and persecution they've been getting.

Back to the romantic thing.....I really like this one girlHeart but I know nothing's gonna happen...Broken Heart I guess that makes me more of a pessimist than a romantic, ehGeek

Hm...romance...Well...I'm romantic in a weird way...I'm a necrophiliac.

No not the kind of necrophiliac that has sex with dead people.Tongue

There are some necrophiliacs, like me, who don't take it so far with the dead.

Necrophilism is all about being dominant in a relationship, findaly having all control about it. That's why almost all necrophiliacs developed their love for the dead after a break-up that they did not expect or after relationships in wich they were being used.

In my case it comes from not having a family until I was almost 3 years old. My mother gave me away to friends at birth, they kept me for a month and then gave me to other people etc. Meaning in the first 3 years of my life I had a band with several people but they always pushed me away again and I couldn't do a thing about it.

So now, because of those problems in my childhood, I feel strongly attracted to the dead.

I have a couple of bones, human and animal, I named them, I talk to them, I nurse them, they're a part of my life. And they can never go away. I have all control over them and over our "relationship".
I'd never go as far as having sex with them, but apparently my case is one of necrophilism too.

Isn't that romantic?Tongue

you're in Tongue
No.Tongue

I love the world, I love our planet, I love every little thing living on it, I love life, I love love.Tongue

I just hate mankind for our ignorance. We're destroying ourselves and our beautiful planet with everything on it in so many different ways and most of us don't even realize or care about it.

I hate myself for not being able to save the world, I hate myself for not being able to make other people listen to me and see that we have to change our way of living if we want out childrens children to be able to breath normaly and go outside without being afraid of getting shot or run over.

I hate the fact that some people on this planet do realize what we're doing to it, yet they don't get heard. The people only think about here and now, they don't care that their children might all die in a nuclear war if we don't stop building atom bombs, they don't care that their grandchildren might all die of longcancer if we keep poluting the air. They're too stuborn to look beyond their own little lives and see the bigger picture.

That's the part I hate. (I can go on like this several pages but I doubt anyone would read it)

For the rest I'm all love.Approve

English humour maybe, Vompatti?

Visitor13 was alluding to a (I presume) fake bet between Tony R and himself, that alluded to Debby being a necrophiliac.

Then when Debby mentioned it, Visitor13 made it seem like Tony R and himself had been discussing such a thing beforehand, which, of course, was not the case.

It's the kind of subtle humour I love!

I'll quote a passage from my welcome thread:

Manunkind now works as a gardener in one of the Martian Greenfriar monasteries. He says he's found his ghak there (Martian word meaning left hand glove absent-mindedly lost a long time ago) and so he feels complete. He doesn't want to go back.

You'll have to look for him there Big smile.

Nothing to do with Astronomy... I saw a program about him, but I can't remember where he's from, but I know it sounds like a lot of fun.

Thought maybe Manunkind was there too, but oh well...

Oh, but you are, all romanticists are extremely silly and ridiculous, we just take ourselves to damn seriously. For example, I went to a Boy Scout Camporee this weekend, and my tent partner (my ASPL) and I stayed up for five hours just talking about the girls we like, and other stupid stuff like love and the like. To an outside observer, this activity looks extremly silly, and looking back, it looks silly and obsesive to myself as well, but it is not the romanticists place to look at things like this logically.

(Oh, and on the second night, there might have been poker involved, every Boy Scout's survival kit should include a good deck of cards)

Um, I was in the tent with another GUY, and I don't lean that way. So stupid, the whole troop had such a good poker game going on, then staff shut us down. Something about being "past lights out" and "disturbing the camp" or some such crap.

Lights out is never when there are cookies, coblers, and shotguns!

Sorry to come back to this subject, but I've been away for a couple of days, and was unaware of the offense I'd caused by referencing such a despicable film whose only intent is clearly to undermine society's moral base.

Just a couple of things:

1 - when the two main characters get together, they are single men with no ties - the whole premise of the movie is what happens when they go their separate ways, and meet up later when their lives have changed completely. It's an age old story about old flames meeting again after years apart, given a new (subversive, evidently) twist.

2 - the story is beautifully told, scripted, filmed & acted.

3 - it is only a movie
