Okay. I have discussed about this with few of my friends and now i ask your opinion.

What do i mean by "Boring"?

Is their instrumentation boring? You don't like how they play?
Is their sound boring, like if they mix their sound in an non-interresting fashion?
And the big one, are their compositions boring? With all the synths and almost no guitar at all?

So is their musiv boring to listen to?

I vote no. ELP does not play boring music.

(Sorry for using the whole long name, i think it sounds pretty good).

long classical-like songs (Karn Evil) may be boring to some, i admit, but not to me, as i am used to classical music and listen to it on regular basis.

ELP are not boring. They inspired so many italian prog bands during the seventies...how could I say their music is boring?

Cold and maybe too much formalistic sometimes, but never boring!

Seeing as I often mix the PA for an ELP tribute band I may be biassed.  I'd say no, they are definitely not boring.

Yes, they inspired them to copy the keyboards sections / style, and keep it as a steady component. Say, even I can mimc those short keyboard prhases (¡tun, tun, tun, tun, tuntún!). Ater one hundreed spins, and after their failure at creating something beyond their own cliches, yes, they are boring indeed.

I didn't vote because sometimes ELP are boring, sometimes they aren't.

Strange how they've divided everyone else's opinion!

overall, no, but I do have a grundge against their sometime unciseled material and, in the 90s, against the pseudo-comeback, giving 5-6 live albums of the same material (and only two studio refreshments, the first being okay, but the second being a practical joke).

Oh yes, they are sooo boring.....zzzzzz......songs like: the barbarian, take a pebble, three fates, tarkus, endless enigma, toccata, karn evil 9....pffffffConfused

One of the reasons I like them is the energy and power they have in their music(often a sort of metal-like approach to the music, which is kinda cool I think).

ELP isn't boring........dated perhaps, as a fan i'd say charming(except for that bloody Yamaha GX-1 keyboardDead ).

But their best compositions are total masterpieces in the progressive rock genre, imo.
(you have to remember that prog as a musical style(approach?) was still in 'embryo state' and ELP was one of the first bands to define that genre, so bravo ELP!)

It's just that ELP had to quit completely after the Works vol.1 album/tour imo(with that album and tour everything was said and done, musically speaking).

Now, neo-progressive that's boringEmbarrassed

ps: oh yeah and Emerson, Lake & Palmer sounds pretty cool!Smile

Take a pebble is one of the best things they've ever done(ever seen the live version from the 'masters from the vaults' dvd?, that's a wonderfull versionSmile).

they are not boring at all.
in fact, I think they are underrated. (IMO Genesis is overrated), Brain Salad Surgery should be in the top ten albums.

Errrr. NO!
Try Tarkus if you think the others are boring, it is more conventional Prog.

Their music is so complicated and there's so much cool stuff from all three instruments to listen to that it's pretty hard for me to get bored listening to ELP.

I'm bored with these kinds of polls, though....

o rly?

I used to really like them, but now I find them a bit dull. Karn Evil 9 is really repetitive, and I find it very revealing that two of the best songs on BSS aren't even ones that they actually wrote. Emerson is still a better keyboardist than Wakeman, though. :P

Their post-Brain Salad Surgery stuff is really boring, but everything before that is great.

I don't understand how anyone could say Tarkus, Endless Enigma, and Karn Evil 9 could ever be considered boring. They're so full of energy and life.

I think many ELP enemies have never heard that band...

I'll second that.

After "Brain, salad, surgery, ELP weren't the same and should have opted for retirement. That was the point when they became boring, kind of irrelevant.
Previoously though, they were the most full on and exciting outfit Prog histrory had known.

When Emerson is given too much rope, they come up with things I find rather annoying (say, Toccata, When the apple blossoms bloom..., The Three Fates, Piano Concerto and his "electric clavinet" extravaganzas).

On the other hand, I think Greg Lake is a great singer and an interesting songwriter: thus, when Emerson,Lake and Palmer produce organic SONGS, they are absoultely enjoyable (I consider Take a Pebble, Trilogy, The Endless Enigma outstanding, and also longer efforts like Tarkus, Memoirs of an Officer and Gentleman and Karn Evil 9 are great).

So I can't vote, because there are SOME things I find boring and SOME OTHERS that are not...

They're not boring.

When they're good they're fantastic (Karn Evil 9, Tarkus, Pictures, Trilogy, Endless Enigma etc.), but when they're not (Benny the Bouncer, Are You Ready Eddie etc.) they're bloody awful!

I generally don't think they are boring.

Their instrumental skills are according to me among the best there are. Their compositions are great. The only problem is that the dark and rather unpolished sound that I think defines them sometimes becomes a bit dull.

Still, I consider them one of my favourite bands, absolutely! I am often astonished by their virtuosity, mainly. And think they're just great! Wink

I would think you would need some serious case of ADD to find them boring. I could see them being too overblown for you, but not boring. Eitherway they're neither. Great band. Never will understand their detractors.

wow.... can think any adjective can be  thrown at ELP and stick... but this one... that in a perverse way is why they can never  be thought of as boring...  can blow your shoes off one moment.. or have you pulling your hair out another...

one moment want to break bad and kick some ass.... another moment you want to snuggle with that someone special and get it on.

boring ..pfff...

Boring? No. Overrated? Probably not. However, I think they have too many hit or miss compositions. Seems to me at times you had 3 large egos in sync and then 3 large egos trying to drown each other out...
They certainly deserve the kudos for expanding rock music at the time, though.

I've never neen a fan, but boring is not really a word to describe them. Tarkus, for example is far from boring! This is their finest hour in my opinion.

I generally dont find myself inspired to listen to ELP. For me, it feels like that have a some good ideas that they dont develop in a way that appeals to me. Too many ballads, too much pomp and classical influence; not enough darkness, atmosphere or ambience. It seems also that the lack of lead guitar is often inadequately compensated for by the other instruments. VDGG are a good example of how guitar can be routinely absent from the music, but not missed because of how the other instruments - mainly the sax - are used in it's place.

That said, ELP are clearly excellent musicians.

I think that KE9 could be boring to someone who doesn't "get" what's going on.  The first several times I heard it I didn't make it halfway through because there didn't to be any semblance of direction after the second part (of course I know better now)...just depends on what someone is accustomed to hearing.  ELP were so over-the-top that it's sort of funny to think of them as boring but IMO there's several bands around here that people hang the 'boring' tag on that are far more engaging than ELP while being less "in your face".

I couldn't agree more....  in fact... regardless of how lyrically the various impressions are tied together.. it is the apparent (to me.. but can always stand to be educated) musical disconnect between them that keeps me from hailing the piece as a whole on the level (other than shear display of musical....chops) of other major work by other groups.
