Ok, fellow proggers, here's the deal. I love this site, and I study its reviews and postings religiously, in search of new music.
It was my birthday recently, and I got a whole bunch of albums for it. I specifically chose the ones above because they seem to be highly respected around here. Yet, I've never heard any of these!!! And for the most part, I've never even heard ANYTHING by these bands before.
So, please vote on which of these albums is your favorite, even if there's a bunch you haven't heard. The results of this poll (assuming i get a good sample of votes) will determine what order I listen to all this new stuff in.

1. PG3 - this is underrated on this site. 2. Tales of mystery and imagination 3. Ocean / Tago Mago
didnt like the beyond twilight, mostly autumn and pallas album. Post rock is not my thing either (the album might be very good though - I have no idea). I dont know the TD albums good enough and the arena album is certainly better than most of the other neo prog stuff (which i have to admit sounds cheesy to me most of the time).

It's a bit tough this one. I had to go for PG - Melt but I could have easily gone for EITS as it is a great LP and has hardly been out of my player in weeks.

But I'm going to do it anyway.
Listen to For the Love of Art and the Making first. It will not bore you.

I know almost all of them (except Alan Parsons, Phaedra, PG and Mostly Autumn), and I have to say Contagion is my favourite - an almost flawless concept album, written in one of Arena's most inspired moments.

Well, it depends on which is your favorite genre, my analysis is:
Neo-Prog: Pallas-Dreams Of Men-perhaps their best effort, often impressive bombastic
and dramatic prog
Electronic: Tangerine Dream-Phaedra-pivotal album featuring wonderful pulsating
sequencers and lush Mellotron work
Symphonic prog: Eloy-Ocean-their most mature and compelling album
Innovative prog: Peter Gabriel 3-excellent blend of emotion, creativity and
technique (music equipment and studio-sound)
By the way, I voted TD-Phaedra

The TD and Can albums are all classics.
Eloy is one of the worst bands I know of, and from the little I've heard of Arena, Beyond Twillight, Pallas and Mostly Autumn (meaning all the streams in the band index) are not far behind. Either just boring or simply awful.
My quess I'm afraid, is that you haven't been that lucky. Seeing that you love Bitches Brew, I can't imagine you'll find neoprog & such interesting.

It's interesting... My favourite album out of those listed gets only one vote here so far - it's Explosions in the Sky, but my least likeable (if at all) albums by Can and Beyond Twilight get maximum of 6 votes each. Obviously my taste is quite different from all those who voted already.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. You all gave thoughtful answers, and there are now a lot of votes in the poll. I'm off to my college now, but when I get back, I'm going to start listening to all this stuff, in an order based on the voting. Looks like PG3, Tago Mago, and Beyond Twilight are the first up, based on what I see right now.
Oh, and yeah I do realize a lot of this stuff will take a while to digest. I'll bring an open mind to it, and listen to each album a bunch of times before forming an opinion.

Get Beyond Twilight! Now, its so good...I could not believe it... Its my newest obsession, go and buy it, the whole album/song is divided in 43 sections, and if you put shuffle you get a whole new song! And most of the times it works really good...this f**kers worked every second so good you can get infinity of possible great epic songs!!! Increidible...hehehe Im sure this guys must hear Tool quite a lot, as this is the only band I could think of would do something of this sort... For me, the best album of the year.

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you an update: I'm already completely in love with Tago Mago. It'll take me approximately 1,000 more listens to really get a handle on it, but it's clearly amazing. Even the weird noise stuff.
Also, just to throw in my two cents on the neo-prog/jazz debate that was going on in this thread: I already knew, even before getting these albums, that I like neo. Or, at least, good neo. I had an appreciation for IQ, Marillion, and possibly others I can't think of right now. I like good music, regardless of genre. Hey, there's even some rap I appreciate in the right mood.
Also, listened briefly to Arena/Alan Parsons/Beyond Twilight/PG3. All are clearly very good even on first listen.

Pfff... while I consider myself really openminded and all, I'm obviously nowhere near as open as you guys.
The only preferance I had to go by was Enteredwinter's Bitches Brew avatar. I love that album, and I can't stand the neoprog I've heard*. From that I guessed his neoprog puchases would be a major dissapointment. I was wrong. A problem for any of you?
(*Actually I rate Discipline: Unfold...a solid ***(1/2). A good, but unoriginal album...and not really neoprog. I'd rather call it retroprog)

What a lucky guy you are, to have friends to give prog albums as present!!!!
Personally, my faves are Can and Tangerine Dream pieces, but since you haven't heard anything from TD before, be careful with those two albums; no matter how big masterpieces they are, you can have hard time to digest them at first (acquired taste...). If you're into symphonic prog, I suggest you to find Force Majeure, Cyclone, Ricochet, or Stratosfear albums first. (if you like Phaedra and Rubycon anyway, you'll certainly like these)
as for Can, I don't have anything to say, since you already said you loved it...
Also Eloy album is a Masterpiece in its own right. It's symphonic prog meeting with space themes and a bit of early psychedelia! My fave Eloy album (and Eloy is among my top 20). Go for it.
------------- Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)
