Please explain if you say yes.

I won't vote, but I would say yes as, he really reminds me at times of Pink Floyd (musically of course).  Your insight is appreciated.

It would be nice if the two people who said yes would explain why...

Isn't he New Age? If we put Kitaro, what's next? David Arkenstone and Yanni?

No, but let me explain:

I see him as 'New Age," and new age music is not here (previous votes & threads  indicated the majority don't want it here, either).

Still, to ME, Kitaro and various other "new age" is much more (or at least as much) akin to prog than some of the other supposed "prog" & "related" stuff I hear here.

(Not to mention any one genre -- but I think the average prog fan of my generation is much more likely to enjoy Kitaro, or Vollenweider, that say ____m ______r or ____h ____l.)

No offense implied to those who like them!

Thus, until new age as a whole is deemed "prog" or "related," Kitaro does not "belong."

I think Kitaro could and would fit into a combination of categories. Go with me here; an unusual blend of progressive electronic, psychedelic/space, experimental and symphonic. You can go to virtually any music store and find Kitaro in the "New Age" section, but look a little further in the rack and you just might find Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. Tell me what y'all think.

Actually Peter there is some 'New Age' here already in the form of some Vangelis,Mike Oldfield and Tangerine Dream albums. There's also Eddie Jobsons 'Theme Of Secrets'.The horse has already bolted!Tongue

That said I voted 'No' as I think Kitaro is just very dull and has no progressive ideas whatsover.I think the likes of Stephen Caudel and Mark Isham should be considered for inclusion before him.Even Clair Hammill maybe.

Kitaro sounds very boring and repetitive to me, I often fall asleep when listening to his music, however I voted "Yes" as this site bears clear inclusive tendencies, and so many non-prog bands are already here, that it makes no point whatsoever to argue against inclusion of another one - not a bad artist at all.

i think his 70s works (and perhaps early 80s) would fall under the prog electronic category.....and do remember he was a member of Jap psych-space rock band Far East Family Band.........

No such genre here.

Do you propose that New Age <> Prog in any circumstances? Even prog related? F.ex. JADE WARRIOR has done new age oriented recordings like "Breathing The Storm".

LOL No Eetu, this is my attempt of sense of humour:
  1. New Age is not remotely Prog
  2. Kitaro is no even New Age, just plain boring music releated to this Genre created to relax stressed Yuppies.
  3. Ergo, Kitaro shouldn't even be mentioned here.

some rather mixed opinions here, i will investigate the group further. if anyone is a fan of Kitaro and can offer any reasonable arguments for or against their suggested inclusion your views will of course be appreciated!Smile

because of his involvement with "Far East Family Band" he could have a case, though his solo albums could be a different kettle of sushi !

I have seen Kitaro listed in other Prog sites, maybe each Prog site has various views on Prog I don't know??

Kitaro has contributed with the Far East Family Band, but unsure of his sure works.

I haven't heard his solo stuff!!

I think yes, to the Progressive electronic section.

Unlike many other musicians working with electronics his music is heartfelt and, as far as I can tell, very Japanese in nature.

I say no.

Kitaro is a very eloquent artist, very minimal and very concentric around every edge. his main characteristic is ambient, fixated upon the electronique technique (though there is no real resemblance of classic maneuvers and accurate such styled frames) and some new age. his music is the tranquil speech, monologue somehow, abundently serene.

with the word of ambient dominating completely, I don't believe he fit entirely the spectre of electronic and of any modality as such. let's don't mix ideas with Brian Eno, who has strong tangents with the electronic mode. Kitaro is ambient tranquillizers, made upon a form of chamber ambience and of background.

moreover, Kitaro is no such thing as a progressive music composer, alluder (sp?), or with strong intentions. his addition in PE would be a meer surface viewpoint, his addition in prog would find many pointless attributes. perhaps tradition. perhaps the spirit of doing a constant application. but nothing more.

my vote is towards no.

Rick Wakeman released:

  1. Six Wives of Henry the VIII
  2. Journey to the Centre of the Earth
  3. Myths & Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
  4. No Eartly Connection
  5. Criminal Record
  6. 1984
  7. Softsword (King John and the Magna Carta)
  8. Black Knights at the Court of King Ferdinand IV
  9. Stella Bianca alla corte de Re Ferdinando
  10. Return to the Centre of the Earth
  11. 5 or 6 great DVD
  12. Co-author of the best Yes Albums
  13. At least 20 excellent live albums

Few artists dream on releasing this number of first class releases, some artoists are included because they released a partially Prog album, we're talking about 10 excellent albums and at least 20 Live ones plus several DVD's and his work in Yes.

Kitaro only released boring music for technocrat Yuppies who liked POP but wanted to look intelligent and Prog was too much for them, who's next, Yanni?

Kitaro has not where to start with Rick Wakeman, mnot a single trascendental album in all his life.

Well, "Boring" is quite subjective characterization. I'm not a fan of KITARO, but I don't loathe him. I think he's quite similar artists as JARRE, prog related being quite good place for both.

As you use RICK WAKEMAN for comparing, for me his music is quite boring too. (Tongue)

functionally, yes. but he did released about 20 years of boring, plastic, occassionally, just occasionally succesful New Age/Disco/Ambient stuff.

I'm not implying anything, regarding Wakeman. just your phrase "New Age isn't prog" is very debatable. and Wakeman is a notorious name, coming in mind, regarding the New Age brand, no?

Wakeman New Age albums are not¨Prog, that's not the reason why he is here.

Rick is here for releasing more Prog albums than lets say 80% off the Prog artists, he0s categorized here in Symphonic for that reason as Genesis is here for their Prog and not for their POP albums.

well, thank you for the opinion, but I think that just knowing Tangerine, Schulze, Froese, Froese, Vangelis, Eno and (by the hatrid side) Kraftwerk means only that I am an electronic (optimistic) lover. like I said in my bio. the fact that every other names in the electronic genre is one empty for me frightenes me and makes me be modest. It's not about fun, it's about a "label" that means dexterity through a wide and open-minded documentation.

but hey, if an Electronic Team finally gets out of future tense and I, by my merits, get nominated as a member of it, guess there's another majority over which I can't pass. Tongue

anyway, back to the subject, enough reflection on me being specialist (though I'm surprised NutterAlert hasn't showed up till now to make his usual "Rico's da man" statement LOL). Wink

so...I don't. (starting it over again). Wink
