Love his earlier work.
Don't care too much for some of the film scores though.

I listened to some of his works : 'opera sauvage', 'chariots of fire' and it didn't click with me. Unhappy

I like his 70's solo works, which are superb progressive electronic, with some experimental moments (Hypothesys, Beauborg) and symphonic moments (Opera Sauvage, Heaven and Hell).

In the eighties, their works are good, but not so good at all, since they are more leant towards new age.

One of my early artists, I still have a passion deep inside for his work and his voice. Of splendid composing skills, of a musical ear that shouldn't be diminished by failures, of a clear tone within music, whatever the case may be.

The early period isn't satisfying, barely promising. The real things starts directly by the masterpieces of Heaven and Hell, Albedo, Spiral.

Small cliches continue, other break in and set the pace.

The tranquill '80s just have their rhythm precisely developed (though the contrary happens).

The experimental Vangelis, by the two albums of 1979 and 1985, are shamefully neglected or even considered brutal maneuver. geez...ShockedCry

The Chariots Of Fire award isn't fair. Not the best soundtrack. Nothing truly special.

The late 80s get much better. Mask has fascinating moments, Direct is one of my favourite albums by him. The City flops.

New age never gets past tense. Argumented or not, doesn't matter.

Masterpiece within 1492. What a bliss!

The 90s are rusted, but for me work fine. Voices is a parallel towards good music considered too easy. Oceanic is often the easy music considered good.

The contemporary years are also something slightly left over, though fantastic. The compositional avengure is at height, the valences of touching classical within the "digital" are well-done. El Greco, masterpiece. Mythodea, not bad at all.

wow, how long I got into talk. how short I said it all.

I like him very much. A recommended artist in its overall. A recommended musical collection, in its best features.

Vangelis was excellent in the 70's with 'opera sauvage', Heaven and Hell, Spiral and China to name a few. His collaborations with Jon Anderson particularly the first two albums were great. ' Short Stories' for me the best of those

I think 'Direct' and 'The City' are both equally good works and in the 90's he had a resurgence with the masterpiece ' El Greco' and ' Oceanic' was his last non opera type studio work.

He is a genius of that there is no doubt. If you can " Hook" into ' El Greco'....it will take much effort but after that you will be spellbound about the depth of that work alone.

He’s my favorite electronic artist. His 70’s era electronic experimentation on albums such as Heaven and Hell resulted in some amazing music. During the 80’s he went all commercial with Chariots of Fire, not bad. Conquest of Paradise is one of his greatest works since the 70’s.

I've got most of his albums. He has been criticised for going ''New Age'' on albums like Soil Festivities and Oceanic which is apparently a great crime and I suspect why some snottily dismiss him.

Best progressive work - Direct/Spiral/Heaven and Hell/Albedo 0.39
Best New Age - Opera Sauvage/Soil Festivities/Voices/Oceanic
Best experimental - Beauborg/Hypothesis/See You Later
Best classical - El Greco/Mask/Mythodea
Best Film Soundtrack - Blade Runner/Antarctica/Apocalypse Des Animaux/Ignacio
Best of all worlds - China
Best album to avoid at all costs (!) - Invisible Connections

I have Spiral on mp3. It's a very good album! I have also heard 1492, though I can't exactly remember how it is.

Some of his earlier albums are definitely on my "to buy" list.
