I am a bass player and I do play in a prog band (progressive metal).
I currently play a 4-string bass and I have made the descision to move to a 6-string bass to add complexity to our music, I have also chosen the bass I want, it's actually Dream Theater bassist John Myung's signature model, the feel of it is similar to my old bass which I love so thats my main reasoning.
anyways it comes in two colours, a silver metallic type thing and a really dark metallic purple, I was hoping for a solid black but whatever
what do you guys think would be a better colour of bass for a prog-metal band?

Silver or purple, or better still both. Complexity can be great but don't forget that sometimes simplicity is equally good. Don't feel that every song has to have like a fancy Bach-inspired neo-classical riff in it.
It's like someone once said about Steve Hackett, "Even if he only plays two notes, they'll be really effective."

Purple is the colour of Prog! There are far too many solid black basses and guitars, same goes for silver.

Yay, another 6-string player
I would go for purple, it's more distinctive as everyone has a black or silver bass.
BTW, you can be just as complex on the 4-string but you get more range with the 6 (obviously). Nothing beets that low B though.

Purple for prog. I feel that solid black basses are too many in number. Go for something a bit different, like purple.

I'd go with silver. I think the purple doesn't look as good as the silver on this particular bass.
