I have recently brought a double album on vinyl one half is Procol harums first album then if you turn it up side down the other side is their Salty Dog album.

Does anybody know the history of this album i.e. when it was pressed, if it is rare.

I don't know much about the history of it, but there are a lot of those from the early 1970s, including T-Rex and Joe Cocker.

They're not particularly rare - I believe they were a budget way of getting two re-issues for the price of one. The quality is better than the horrible MFP later releases, tho'

The Regal Zonophone pressings are the rare ones

There was a a compilation album called "A Salty Dog" released in 1972 the MFP label, but it is not the real "A Salty Dog" album. It has some songs from that album, and it also has songs from other albums ("Shine on Brightly", "Home")  and stereo versions of "Conquistador", "Homburg", etc., that were not available at that time in any other album (their first album was released only in mono; it is rumored that the stereo version of "Homburg" has original members Bobby Harrison and Ray Royer instead of B.J. Wilson and Robin Trower). I think that these stereo versions were released in a Boxed Set in the late 90s.

One cousin has an album called "Relics" by Pink Floyd. Side One of this copy is really Side One of "Dark Side of the Moon", but the label and the cover are from the "Relics" album. Side Two is the correct Side Two of the "Relics" album. For some time we thought that this album was the "real" "Relics" album, but when we listened to the real "Dark Side..." album we knew that his copy of "Relics" was wrong.

In general terms, wrongly pressed or labelled albums are not that valuable. it's not like stamps or coins, where an error can be worth thousands of pounds. The quality controls are different for LP and CD manufacturing.

You may find ardent fans who are interested in oddities, but most will be far more interested in genuine rareties.

I have an L.P. copy of  The Who`s "Who Are You", which I bought in late 1978. My copy has two labels on Side One,  one of them was not glued very well, so I can see the other label behind it!

I bought King Crimson`s "Lizard" album in 1981. In Side One there is the correct label for this record (Atlantic SD 8278). But in Side Two it has a label of an album called "The Best of Sam & Dave" (Atlantic SD 8218).

Apart from these mistakes, the records play very well.

I don`t know if in e-bay.com some of these albums with mistakes are sold.

There was a copy of that in our local library in the late 70s - I think it was originally released as a low priced twofer, but I can't recall ever seeing another copy, so it may have some scarcity value. I recorded it onto a C90, long since vanished.
