Hello to all here. I'm relatively new to the prog experience. Actually, I started getting into this style of music in Dec '05 when my bro forced me to listen to  Dream Theater - Awake album. At first I thought, "Another rejected metal band" but after another listen I though, "Holy #@!* these are good!"  And since then, I've tried to create a small prog-metal 'dictionary'  As far as the collection goes I have...

Band                                   Album
------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater                     All the albums (inc live, bootlegs, fan stuff, promo and all related DT Cd's)
Tool                                    All the albums
Queensryche                        All the albums
Threshold                            All their studio albums
Evergrey                              In Search Of, Recreation Day, The Dark Discovery
Pain Of Salvation                   12:5, Entropia, Be, The Human Equation
Poverty's No Crime                The Chemical Chaos, Slave To The Mind
Symphony                            Symphony X
Riverside                               Out Of Myself, Second Life Syndrome
Opeth                                  Ghost Reveries, Still Life, Blackwater Park
Psychotic Waltz                     Into the Everflow (and seeking the others, desperately!)

So yeah, for 9 months hard work and careful spending, I've successfuly build a small collection. Although, to be fair I do listen to the likes of Porcupine Tree, Rush, Wishbone Ash, RHCP and the likes... But yeah, here I am.  Any comments regarding the collection or any that I should look into would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.  Big smile

Well ... you should definitely try to complete your PM collection:

- buy more Symphony X albums (you have their weakest one). Look for Divine Wings of Tragedy, V or The Odyssey
- You listed The Human Equation (Ayreon) as a Pain of Salvation album. If you like THE you should definitely try to get Into the Electric Castle. The Star One: Space Metal album is also a must have for any serious Ayreon fan with an affinity for metal.
- You *must* get the other Pain of Salvation albums - TPE 1 and Remedy Lane are masterpieces!
- Shadow Gallery! All their albums (except the debut which is a demo, technically) are great!

OK, um, where to start...
Um... right, now I got it...

To 'King of Shiam'  -  I'm checkling into DeadSoul Tribe as we speak... Big smile

To 'WayWard Son'  -  OK, I think I get your point... I see Amazon selling it so I'll buy it anyway else I fear you may hunt me like a fox and gut me like a fish... LOL

To 'Australian' and 'Oniric'  -  I actually forgot to mention ELP. I have 2 of their albums, I just didn't remember as i typed. One is Tarkus and the other is Brain Salad Surgery. As for the others, I spotted a Camel CD a while back and remembered that a friend recommended them, though I've never heard their stuff... And the likes of Floyd, Genesis and Deep Purple - Are they prog? I didn't even know. Confused  Oh, and Transatlantic, I'll also check them out.

To 'MikeEnRegalia'  -  I was looking to getting the other studio albums and perhaps live ones by Pain Of Salvation, Ayreon and Shadow Gallery. However, as far as Symphony X went, I heard of them, got the first album I saw and hated it so... yeah, stopped even thinking of it. BUT. . . . repeat, BUT! If you say the rest are worthwhile, I'll check them out.

And finally, I thank you all for your kind suggestions. Keep 'em coming and I'll see all  y'all around.

You should definitely check out Enchant. And also the projects featuring Jorn Lande on vocals (Ark, Beyond Twilight, Masterplan - there are more, but that's all I know). Also Nightingale (a Dan Swano prolect).

To 'Cristi'  -  I had heard of the band 'Masterplan' but never actually bought anything so, I'm checking them out now.  And, Beyond Twilight is already on my "seeking to buy" list. Specifically their album, "For The Love And Art of Love Making"  But I'll have a look into the others as well.  Thanks.

You may also like "Cynic", "Fates Warning", "Watchtower" and maybe "Meshuggah" (Extreamly heavy and complex band).
I don't own a single album by those bands, i've only heard samples.

Camel, especially if you are an Opeth fan.  Grab 'Mirage', 'MoonMadness' and 'Music inspired by The Snow Goose'.  Camel are one of Akerfeldt's biggest influence, and an AMAZING band I discovered lately and can't get enough of.

Welcome to PA !!!

I noticed you are a Threshold fan, so you should get their live DVD 'Critical Energy'.

You also may want to find out about Enchant.  For a nice way to discover them, I suggest the live album (or DVD) 'Live at Last'.  A great compilation and a great show!

Symphony X have a strong Power Metal influence ... if you don't like that aspect, then you should listen to them more before you decide to buy an album. Speaking of samples: http://www.symphonyx.com - http://www.symphonyx.com . They have many full songs available for download! All of them are quite representative of the albums.Smile

So, thanks again for everything (inc. the laugh Smile ) and I'll be around. Thumbs Up
