Of those listed I voted for 'The Red And The Black'. Though my favourite BOC song is the fabulous live version of 'Then Came The Last Days Of May' from 'On Your Feet Or On Your Knees'. A wonderful song.

*GR genuflects*

"Veteran ..." is one of my favourite songs of ALL TIME - the version on ET Live is just out of this world, with a blistering solo by the criminally underrated Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. And the lyrics are great too... "And I've used up my weapons, and I'm helpless and bereaved...". I used to relate to this song quite a lot in difficult times of my life (not any longer, thank heavens!). Other firm favourites of mine are "7 Screamin' Dizbusters", "Quicklime Girl", "Divine Wind" (my current sig), and of course guitar tour-de-force "Last Days of May". Out of this list, though, I voted for "Black Blade".

Oh God! What could I say? Astronomy and Flaming Telepaths since are both from my favourite album Secret Treaties.

Nevertheless, all the songs above mentioned are great. We fans of Blue Oyster Cult should have a special place in our heart for each one!Heart

What a pity for the absence of Veterans of the Psychic Wars....

The Seige & Investiture Of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle in Bavaria... or something or other... quite cool, but not heard it in 15 years!!

I also like very much the opener of the 1983 album Revolution by Night. It's titled Take Me Away and is really one of the best there along with Shadow of California and Dragon Lady and Light Years of Love and ...

Monsters/Black Blade (I only saw Black Blade after I'd already voted for the Spinal Tap-esque Marshall Plan, which was the song that finally got me into BOC; "It's gonna sound like... it's gonna sound like... ").

Of those, Black Blade (yes, believe it or not) and Burnin' For You.Cool

I'm a big Moorcock/Elric fan, so that makes the first extra cool, and I just find my second choice to be a very catchy R&R song. (It's worlds away from their old sound though.)

I used to LOVE BOC -- had lots on vinyl -- but I seem to have largely outgrown them.Ermm

(And Rainbow, and Alice Cooper and Sabbath.... Not Zeppelin or Purple though -- to me, they had more depth, and have aged better in my collection.)

hmmm, the most part of the songs from their first album is missing. OK, Cities on Flame is the most rapresentative, but how about the wonderful opener "Transmaniacon MC"???

Almost all the tracks there are BOC's classics.Wink

You're right, Andrea... "Last Days of May" should be there at the very least! And "Transmaniacon" is great, I agree about that! As well as some more tracks from "Cultosaurus Erectus" and "Fire of Unknown Origin".

Raffaella, what do you think of Spectres?

Which is the most "prog" there in your opinion? The Golden Age of Leather or Nosferatu?

Both are wonderful? I love that album more than the previous Agents of Fortune...(which is great, don't want to be misunderstood...Embarrassed).

HUGE BOC fanatic here... I have all their albums, and that includes that pre-BOC St. Cecilia Recordings reissue that was released a couple of years back.  I'm seeing them live (for the first time believe it or not!) in January... I can't wait.  Because I'm such a dork, I'm going to list my favorite BOC songs per-album...

BLUE OYSTER CULT - Transmaniacon MC - Cool, lo-fi rocker with almost-whispered vocals, an eerie vibe (as was par-for-the-course of their early material) and check out the neat guitar line during the chorus!

TYRANNY AND MUTATION - Wings Wetted Down - Most people favor the hard-rockign first side of this LP but I'm in love with the moody pieces on the second side, particularly this gem!

SECRET TREATIES - Flaming Telepaths - Wacked-out sci-fi rocker (the first of many) that I put as the climax of this album before Astronomy lulls you back into a relaxed state... the synth solo is amazing!

AGENTS OF FORTUNE - Revenge of Vera Gemini - You have to be a total BOC dork not to rate Reaper as your favorite cut on this classic... I always liked this dark track, featuring guest-vocals by Patti Smith.

SPECTRES - Nosferatu - Could have easily gone to I Love the Night as Well, but I find the piano runs through this song to be very creepy, and I'm a sucker for horror movies anyway.

MIRRORS - The Vigil - Hard rocking song from a soft-rocking LP, featuring an amazing classical guitar segment in the middle... definitely their most underrated epic, it's ripe for a re-appraisal.

CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS - Unknown Tongue - Zany psycho-sexual S&M-laced track with a funny ending, this has catchy vocal melodies, some great riffs, and an overal unique sound that I've yet to hear duplicated.

FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN - Joan Crawford - C'mon, it's got to be this track...  who doesn't love a song with a chorus that proclaims that the title character has risen from the grave?  My eyes have gone the color of frozen meat...

THE REVOLUTION BY NIGHT - Eyes on Fire - Neat little piano ballad.  It's catchy.  I like it.

CLUB NINJA - Spy in the House of the Night - A lot of close-calls on this much maligned BOC album...  I had to go with this track, but it could have easily went to a couple of others as well.

IMAGINOS - Blue Oyster Cult - Slick remake of Subhuman, as it were... this is BOC's best album, so I love all the songs, but something about this being the eponymous track for the band just makes it seem like a right choice.

HEAVEN FORBID - Harvest Moon - OK, an obvious choice for once, but it's a great tune.  BOC's comeback album has some pretty good tracks... I almost picked X-Ray Eyes, as it's a return to their sci-fi schlock-rock that I love!

CURSE OF THE HIDDEN MIRROR - The Old Gods Return - A hard rocking tune on this, their latest album.  I'm not as familiar with this as others, but I recall the second side being slightly better than the first.

Been a BOC fan for years.  Secret Treaties and Spectres are definitely my favourite albums.  Astronomy is a great track, as is "I Love the Night" and "Nosferatu".

Used to give the neighbours serious grief with Extra-Terrestrial Live in the 80's.

Sorry to veer the topic off course for a sec, but seeing as how this whole poll'll probably be seen by BOC fans, I has a question:

which would be a good album to start with (or their best, whichever)

I've heard a bunch of songs of theirs, but only have one (3 chances to guess it and the first two don't count)

Thanks for the help!

Either of the first three albums are a good place to start.  I went with the debut and then went in order (T&M...Secret Treaties).  The first one is very raw and dark; production-wise, it sounds like there's five years between the first two.  They all kick a lot of ass, so you can't lose.
