This is an idea I got from another forum, and I wanted to use it here, I will be keeping track of this and it will of course have to involve multiple threads. The premise is really simple.
For the next week or two, each forum member will get to choose a band with album to compete in the Prog Olympics. Only one band can be entered, and thus one album, so choose wisely.
For example, if I picked Yes - Relayer, no other Yes works would get to be chosen, and that would be the representative for Yes. This will go on a first come, first serve basis. I will update this post every so often with what is competing.
One band/album per forum member. You don't get to pick 80 different things you want, so pick your favorite album in your collection. This will be arranged similar to World Cup Soccer. We will have group play and then divide down into rounds as bands/albums are eliminated. Selections for groups will be random, and polls will be as objective as possible.
New Addition: When polls are released, in order for your vote to count, you must make a post indicating your vote. This is necessary to prevent the use of multiple accounts/IP addresses, etc. from skewing the votes in one direction or the other. In other words, the Prog Archives tally in the poll is not final, because I will be tallying votes by posts.
By doing this, I'm hoping we can not only have a good time, but enlighten others as to our tastes. This is for community fun, so let's be civil you Genesis vs Yes camps(you know who you are!)
PLEASE CHECK THIS POST EVERY SO OFTEN FOR UPDATES. Thank you!
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS WILL BE SEPT 31. VOTING WILL BEGIN OCT 1.
Let the games begin!

MOTW(Match of the week): PoS vs GYBE ended up 17-16. Very close and interesting one. Expect new polls up shortly.
Expect me to do anaylsis and predictions once we get past group play. Too many albums and too little time to break down each match as of now. Guest help is more than appreciated. :-)
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=28865&PN=1
IMPORTANT: Only votes with posts will qualify.
3 points for win, 1 point for tie
Group play will have each group face off against each other. The first and 2nd place winners from each group will move on. A winner will play B's 2nd, and B's winner will play A's 2nd in single elimination afterwards. This will go on down the line with C,D, E,F etc..
The winners of A 1st match play winners of C 1st match, and similarly winners of B 1st's match will play winner of D's first match.
Semifinals will be of AC vs BD, and similarly for EF vs GH.
This will create the final of A-D vs E-H.
Thats confusing yes, but you will get it as we go along.
It will probably take a week to get through group play, but time isn't set in stone.

Suggestions are more than welcome.
I set it up to be like world cup play, I thought it would be the simplest and easiest to understand for everyone here.
But if you guys want to see something else, we can certainly do something different for the 2nd edition.(or i could just delete all these polls i just made... )
If this goes well I'm planning on making some changes myself
For one, Albums on this one wont be allowed on the next, as a way of spicing things up so to speak.

Nah, you went standard eventually; at one point, you gave hints of genre-debates, of special-features or affinities connections to works. "Olympics" just go a little inexpressive here.
And I do hope the admins won't get irritated by so many brackets. Bit chaotic, sorry (again).

Hey! I have a suggestion for those of us with...ahem...crappier internet connections. I.e. dial-up.
Could the first line in the first post of each PROG OLYMPIC thread be the two fighting bands? That way I could ghost my mouse over the topic titles and see who's playing in that thread without having to open each one individually OR keep them all in my head (a harder task yet!)?
