we've done quite a few one on one band polls but I don't remember this matchup taking place.
Personally its Pink Floyd for me, much more solid albums overall: Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon are all classics.
The only Yes album that mathes up with these is Fragile.
And Pink Floyd has done far superior epic pieces Dogs > CTTE, Shine on > Gates of Delirium

Oh, I think we've done every combination, but I vote for Pink Floyd, because I think you meant to write "Marillion" but just had a few typos. Common mistake. Wink

Yes is far superior to any band, ever, in my opinion. First of all, they are far superior musicians. Plus, I really love their sound, but most importantly their ENERGY! They have such a vibrant and colorful palate. FOr instance, in CTTE, the keyboard section in the middle, with the diminished theme is simply genius! I could go on, but I think that Yes covers a lot more musical ground that Flyod does. Not to discredit Floyd, which is one of my favorite bands.

Floyd. Much more enduring. I'm a bit over Yes after only a year of listening to them. (besides Close to the Edge album and Starship Trooper). I'll listen to a Floyd album weekly or so still and its been years.

A difficult question.
I used to like Pink Floyd. I liked them many years. But now I almost lost my interest to them. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy them, but... nostalgically, so to say.
On the other hand, many years the music of Yes was "closed" to me just because of the mere fact -- I could not stand Jon Anderson's voice (and manner of singing). I still have problems with it, but, somehow, in general, I have managed to overcome the unpleasant feelings. And I have to say that the music of Yes is much more interesting and challenging for me than that of Pink Floyd.
Hence, some years ago I would vote for Pink Floyd. Today I vote for Yes.

Let's put it like this:

 Listeanability:                                                           Floyd >>>>>>    Yes
 Diversity:                                                                 Floyd >>>           Yes
Originality (Sounds, style, moods, atmospheres):           Floyd <<<           Yes
 Musicianship:                                                            Floyd <<<<<<<  Yes
Writing (Structures, creative passages):                       Floyd     <<         Yes
Feeling (Passion, emotional, true passion, conviction,
"no artificial feeling"):  Floyd >>>>>>     Yes
Longevity (Still sounding fresh after the years):             Floyd       >          Yes
Best vs. Best                                                            Floyd       >>>     Yes
 Overal                                                                     Floyd     >>>>     Yes

 Pink floyd 6
 Yes         3

This is subjective of course. However, something I feel turns the balance in favor of Floyd, is that their songs are more timeless. Whereas Yes songs have a big flaw. They use too many choruses repeated all over the place, making them somehow very memorable but also less interesting every time you listen to them again and again. Floyd's manage to be a nice backgrouond to relax and listen no matter how many times you've listened to them in the past. Take Shine on you crazy Diamond. Those touching lines are a perfect match for a drink anytime. And take Close to the edge, although it is a great song, something in my mind tells me I'm about to listen to something I could sing along because of the repetitive chorus throughout. Plus, FLoyd's songs sound way more inspired and sincere.

although i doo fell that on the level of musicianship the "dogs > CTTE" statement just doesn't add up, i feel that on every other aspect i pretty much prefer Pink Floyd

i'm not quite in the mood to listen to it as much as i did in the past, but it still beats Yes; also, in terms of being influential, a point that has not been brought in so far, the Floyds have little if any contestants [apart form Beatles maybe]

a PF vs KC poll now.... that would've been a tough choice Wacko

Where are all the Yes fans who came out in record numbers to vote against DT in the "Yes vs. DT" poll?!? I know Yes has more supporters than this...

Yes gets my vote, though I'm not sure how qualified to vote in this poll. The more I listen to CttE, the more I like it, but I just can't get into Pink Floyd. I think it just reminds me too much of classic rock radio or something...

There's no way I'm going to choose between two of my all-time favourite bands. Pink Floyd may have been more consistent in their output than Yes, but the latter's best albums rank amongst the absolute masterpieces of prog. So, it's a tie for me.

I voted for Floyd DESPITE these (and Piper at the Gates) because I don't think Floyd really started till Atom Heart Mother, when Gilmour stamped his influence on the band and Barrett had disappeared.

From then to Animals, they were consistently excellent.

Yes made good albums (CTTE, The Yes Album, Relayer) but also some poor ones (TFTO) and some inconsistent ones (Fragile).

This hasn't happened before, but, I am, so far, going to abstain from voting. It is too close a call.
These were two of my favourite three bands in the '70s, (the third being Genesis, who I still rank as my number one) and which one I preferred depended on my mood.
There are so many things to take into consideration here, seeing as the bands are totally different.

Of course, on sheer musicianship I would vote for Yes.

On atmosphere and humour I would vote for Floyd. (They do have humour in their songs sometimes, even if it's dark humour. Eg: Have A Cigar, Corporal Clegg.)

Favourite musician out of either band would be Chris Squire (Yes)
Second fave would be Dave Gilmour (Floyd)

Popularity award would have to go to Floyd. Most people have heard of them, even those who don't know anything about them, or about prog.

Of course, Floyd are now defunct, whilst Yes keep going, sort of! But they aren't the band they used to be.

Favourite album of either band overall - I can't decide to be honest.Confused

Therefore, as it stands, I have to call it a tie and abstain. If I voted for Yes today (and I have been playing lots of Yes lately) I would probably vote for Floyd tomorrow.LOL

Interestingly, my two favourite 'modern' bands are Porcupine Tree (Floydy) and Flower Kings (Yessy)!

And I can't decide between them either!

this is a bad poll. Pink Floyd's music requires a lot of patience, due to the level of ambience, spacey and psychedelia in the music. YES requires patience, but a different kind. in other words, PF will play 5 notes for every 25 YES plays. their styles are also waaaaaaaayyy different

there is no way pink floyd is better than yes. When u get down to it Yes had way more hits than Pink floyd, is more crowd pleasing and all around good. where as pink floyd is more of a simple groove band. David gilmour is good but his solos are no where near as good as steve howe's.

Of course, Yes are masters of the more uptempo happy sound.
I prefer the dark, doom-laden soundscapes of Floyd.

one has to understand that the topic is a little vauge. obviously technically YES is better than PF, but in terms of originality? they're both original. more artistic? PF is a little more but not by much. epics? thats another tough one. PF dont have as many since most of their albums are meant to be listened as a whole. Commercial success? PF had more consecutive hits, whereas YES had hits every other album or so. and Owner of a Lonely Heart is a sad excuse for a 'hit'.

this poll is too... pointless...

Yes is defiantly more complex than Pink Floyd in my experience, but for that reason Pink Floyd songs are fun to play on guitar and they look difficult but aren’t really.

I voted for Pink Floyd.
I hate The Wall, but I have enormous respect for DSOTM, WYWH, and Animals.
I respect Yes as musicians, and I enjoy CTTE. However, Jon Anderson's vocals, and their lyrics, kill a lot of their music for me.
I just can't listen to some of the gibberish they spout.
Pink Floyd is a more complete package, with good vocals and lyrics in general.

Hmm...  One group makes happy songs, the other makes dark songs.  I prefer Yes because I find the Pink Floyd "mood" to be so dark and slow that it become a little dreary and boring to me.  Yes's upbeat songs keep me on my toes.

Two phantastic bands, both however with material of an uneven quality (from superb to mediocre). I think Yes wins by the smallest of margins because they've made the best albums. No Pink Floyd album can match the overall quality of Close To The Edge and Relayer, even though Wish You Were Here and Meddle comes pretty close.

6. Atom...,

compare to:
1. Close to the edge
2. Fragile
3. Yes album
4. Relayer

For me it's 6 against 4

Pink Floyd win by 2 MILES!

I used to prefer Yes but I think I slightly prefer Pink Floyd now. Yes is easier to get into for me, I guess because they are more vibrant like Camel but I can only listen to a few songs in a row before they start to annoy me. Pink Floyd is more enjoyable because it has a nice cool sound that never gets on my nerves. Really, though, it depends on my mood. Tomorrow I'll probably just like Yes just fine :)

Much as I love the Floyd, Yes are simply incomparable. Yes, a thousand times ...
