A weird thing occured today. I was once again talking about music with my friends. Like normal I said that "wow that solo by so and so is so emotional and gives chills to me every time" and "Peter Gabriel sings really emotionally in that Genesis song" etc... Well all of a sudden one of my friends says that he doesn't know what I mean by emotional. I tried to explain, but he didn't get it. He listens to pretty much only DT so that might explain it . (no offence to our DT fans, I like 'em too ) Well anyway I think he's really missing a lot of great music and I'd like to show him some emotional guitar solos, emotional singers, etc... I'm not saying that music has to be necessarily emotional, but there are a lot of great emotional moments in prog and I'd just like to show some of those to my friend.
So any suggestions for any emotional parts of songs or solos or singing or whatever? Just don't give me band names, because I know what bands are emotional and what aren't. I just don't feel like thinking too much right now.

I was trying to beat E-dub to the punch. Never know when he'll pop out of nowhere and praise Marillion.
Seriously, Easter is probably the best song ever.

ROTFLMAO!!!! My reputation preceeds me.
In terms of solos, you really can't top "Easter". I think I had heard when H presented that song to the band upon joining, Rothers nailed that solo on the first take. H happened to have his tape recorder running, and we should all feel fortunate. The solo on "Fallin' From The Moon" from "The Great Escape" is up there, too.
Vocally, I'd say "Living With The Big Lie", "The Great Escape", "Afraid Of Sunlight", and "This Strange Engine" (especially live) give me the chills.
Outside of Marillion, Neal Morse's "Oh To Feel Him" from Testimony and his final moments on "The Great Nothing" are spine chilling, too.

Marillion - Sugar Mice. Works for me every time.
Yes - Turn Of The Century. Superb atmosphere, melody and, for once, understandable lyrics from Anderson. He sings it wonderfully well!

I'll go a long way with Stonebeard and E-Dub here. For some variation you may add
A little too far New York City don't mean nothing Somewhere in time Believe
All of those can be found on Streets by Savatage.
There's more to mention I guess, but this immediately popped up since I'm doing a review on the album.

Alex Lifeson's solo in the middle of "La Villa Strangiato" on Rush Hemispheres.
Gilmore on many songs such as "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", "Dogs", "Comfortably Numb"
For non-prog, Neil Young has very emotional guitar solos.

Well, theres different oppinions about this but The guitar solo in 21st Century Schizoid Man by KC. Its a chromatic solo therefor it might be a little weird the first time you hear it, but often it shows that either you hate it and think it sounds like ****, or you really like it and find it both emotional but also extremely creative and skillfull... I dont know what your point of view on it is but mine is deffinately Emotional master solo!!

You know, a lot of McLaughlin's solos in Mahavishnu Orchestra are pure emotion. The raw, firy intensity has some sort of emotion.

Marillion's Steve Hogarth sends shivers up and down my spine when he sings "Beautiful", "Afraid of Sunlight" and "King". Steve Wilson does something similar with "Trains", "Heart Attack In A Layby" and his vocal interlude in "The Sky Moves Sideways - Phase 1". These guys sure no how to turn on the emotional taps.!

Quite honestly, the one that gets me the most is Pink Floyd's 'The
Final Cut' (the song, not the album. When he's singing the refrain
"would you send me packing... or would you take me home" and his voice
breaks on the final note... moves me every time. In addition, it
features one of Gilmour less showy, yet most powerful solo. I really
feel that it encapsulates his sound perfectly.

To stay with Pink Floyd, one of the most emotional songs I've heard is "When the Tigers Broke Free", in which Roger Waters relates the circumstances of his father's death at Anzio during World War II. His singing there is utterly heart-wrenching, especially the last line when he sings "and that's how the high command/took my daddy from me". Brings tears to my eyes every time.

Well, emotional solos are a Neo progressive affair.

roger waters - wghat god wants pt3, the 2nd solo: ..."Christ it's freezing inside"...
anyone's daughter - adonis (the solo at the end)

Afraid Of Sunlight is full of emotinal moments as well. I mentioned "Afraid Of Sunlight" (especially "I've been in pain for so long. I can't even say what hurts anymore". Lyrics that simply ache.)
"Beyond You" - the section that starts with, "If I was a child, I would refuse to leave," and you have that Spector 'Wall Of Sound' image.
"Gazpacho" - Immediately following the section of "...you can tell it to the ocean" and the band simply explodes. I'll have that on in the car and when that moment arrives I can literally see the back windshield vibrate.

Slow emotional solos are my favourite, here are a few:
Pink Floyd - Comfrtably Numb, On The Turning Away
Genesis - Firth Of Fifth

Roger Waters - What God Wants, Part 3
Dream Theater - Lines In The Sand, Finally Free, Razor's Edge (Octavarium), Another Day, Goodnight Kiss, Hell's Kitchen, Hollow Years (Live @ Budokan), Through Her Eyes (Live Scenes From New York), Spirit Carries On
Liquid Tension Experiment - Freedom of Speech, State Of Grace
Queensrÿche: Silent Lucidity
Spock's Beard - She Is Everything
Neal Morse - God's Theme 1
A few emotional singing which pops into my head:
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, Hey You, Mother
Marillion - Seasons End
King Crimson - Epitaph
Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest, Anna Lee, Through Her Eyes, Spirit Carries On Porcupine Tree - Lazarus
Spock's Beard - Carie, She Is Everything
Neal Morse - Oh, To Feel Him
As you can see I'm a big DT fan.
