There's a town in the north of England called Sc**thorpe, that apparently gets neutered by many unthinking censorship programmes - wonder if it'll happen here? Question

Armando Iannucci, a comedian, writer & producer, pointed out in the Observer newspaper that Bush's "The War Against Terror" has a splendid & apposite acronym.....

Hmm. Curious.

It's surprising in a way that the Web Wiz Forums software does not distinguish between "t**t" with a space character (ASCII 32) in front and after it, and "t**t" with an ASCII character in the ranges A...Z (ASCII 65 to ASCII 90) and a...z (ASCII 97 to 122) in front and/or after it.

But perhaps the software author wanted to protect against posting of non-words such as "megat**t", "t**tface", "you_t**t" and so on. Parsing software could account for those types of text strings by disallowing "<space>t**t<space>" and "<ASCII character other than a space>t**t<space>" and "t**t<ASCII character other than a space>". This would at least let strings such as "Night**tch" (N-i-g-h-t-W-a-t-c-h) through without replacing the "w" and "a" with asterisks.

More-intelligent parsing would be slower. I assume parsing is done at the time of posting rather than at the time of displaying, so I would have thought more complicated parsing would not be too noticeable.

Does anyone have any experience of other Web site forums? Does the software on those Web sites censor banned words more intelligently than the Web Wiz Forums software used on ProgArchives?
