Dallas:

I would strongly suggest changing it to one vote only.  I would like to vote, and will not do so on multiple vote polls, since they really aren't of any value.

Peace.

My personal choice is PFM Storia di un minuto. It has great songs like "Impressioni di settembre" and "dove? Quando?". Also it is the first prog album I ever heard and brings lots of memories to me. What, sentimentality isn´t allowed?Embarrassed

Also, I resent the absence of Il rovescio della medaglia. Perhaps they have made only one good album, but some album!

I haven't heard "Per Un Amico", but I've got 3 other PFM albums, and they're all superb - so it has to be PFM whatever!

Best album cover...hmm...definitely not self-title 'Banco', yikes!

Probably Le Orme's Uomo di Pezza or Storia O Leggenda...they look like they sound, especially Uomo...

PFM was the most "stylish" prog band in Italy. Their "Impressione Di Settembro" live in Tokyo 2000 is beautiful...

Photos Of Ghost is fantastic, but Micro is right, Istoria Di Un Minuto bring back memories...

If you havent heard anything but the top three bands
PFM, Banco, and Le Orme from Italy
I would like to make some suggestions beyond
those bands

Il Volo / Essere, o non essere
New Trolls/ Concerto Grosso no. 1
Locanda della Fate/ Forse le Lucciole non si Amano
Semiramis/ Dedecado A Frazz
Osanna/ Palepoli
Biglietto per L’Inferno/ same
Museo Rosenbach/ Zarathustra
Maxophone/ same
Il Balletto di Bronzo/ Ys

the italian versions are the best as the english is
kinda lame
Il Volo is the only one that only has one track with
italian vocals the rest is great!
1st side of New Trolls is the best suite in Italian prog
and Semiramis musically is unbelievable, different
album everytime you play it
Locanda is beautiful

you should at least give these four a try!

harder rock - Biglietto and Museo
jazzy -Osanna and Maxo
complex - Balletto

I don't have any of those albums .... am I missing a lot?

PS: My favourite bands would be: King Crimson, GY!BE, Camel, Yes, Genesis, Camel, Rush, Soft Machine, Gong, Caravan, Anglagard, Pink Floyd         & nbsp;        which of those could you compare the italian style to?

Try the mp3s on their band pages in the archives, there's one for almost all of the albums mentioned here.

 BebieM,

Yes, especially if your favourite band is Crimson - most Italian bands owe them a debt of some sort.  PFM actually covered 21st Century Schizoid Man live, whilst Pete Sinfield wrote some of their lyrics for their English album releases.

For the others see:

Godspeed - try Algarnas Tradgard (actually Swedish, but hey...) - my friend actually mistook them for Godspeed the other day.  There's a download on this site.

For Yes, try Banco Del Mutuo's first 3 albums - Francesco sings more operatically than JA, but its in his range!

For Genesis (<1974) see Acqua Fragile, and MAYBE the OCCASIONAL PFM, and Celeste.

For Genesis (>1974) what do you want something that sounds like that for?

For Soft Machine/Caravan see Picchio Dal Pozzo (who dedicated their first amazing album to Roberto Viatti).

For Camel there's a good French band called Carpe Diem ('En Regardant....') who have similar tendencies.

For Gong - again there are elements in Algarnas Tradgard.  Unfortunately, the Italians dont seem to have been as tripped out as the Gong collective.

I couldn't vote in this poll. I adore so many of those albums, it was impossible to choose.

It was hard indeed, to vote for one...

Locanda delle Fate got my vote.

I haven't actually heard (or, at least, not in a long time) all of these albums.

I have to do some intensive listening for a couple of days/weeks/months/years/lifetimes...

I have quite a few of PFM's albums.. and I've seen them live a few times in the 70s. Out of all the Italian prog bands, I think I prefer them because they've always seemed more versatile to me.  I've also a few Banco and Le Orme albums... but altho I like them, I don't play them often.

Unlike most devout PFM fans however, I prefer their English lyrics albums.  Not just because I'm a fan of Pete Sinfields... but because I just prefer understanding the words....

Like Trouserpress, I couldn't vote either: it's just too difficult to choose between such good albums.

Actually it's a good (but far from complete) list of Italian albums that Prog fans should check out. Much superb Prog music originates from Italy.

Although some people say they cant understand the English!!!!

The lyrics to Chocolate Kings are the most poigant and prophetic I've ever heard - and beautifully delivered by Lanzetti.

Of course Threefates, you know Lake performed on stage with them in Italy just after they signed for Manticore (apparently did 21st Century Schizoid Man and some others) - I would sell my house to buy a bootleg of that show....know ye of such a recording?

So glad Melos by Cervello was included - if anyone's looking for a new Italian prog LP to try they could do worse than this ASTONISHING COLOSSUS!!!!!!

This is a very good list of the best Italian prog. Many of those albums are my favourites and every single of them is at least excellent. I voted for Zarathustra.

The original Italian releases are great, but I still like the collaborative English language albums they did with Pete Sinfield lyrics.  "Chocolate Kings" and "Jet Lag" also rate  pretty highly with me.

I've managed to see PFM live twice - the Felt Foum in MSG, NYC with John Sebastian and Poco in '73 and Massey Hall, Toronto in '74.  Absolootely amazing!!  They still bring back fond memories  Probably two of the best shows of the 70's I've ever seen.  Phenomenal energy and concentration in their playing.  "Cook" barely manages to convey the feeling.  Got to get their "Live in Japan" set which I've heard is outstanding, sometime soon... and relive some of those fond memories.

I personally think that PFM's song "Is My Face on
Straight?" is the best english lyric italian progressive
song from the 70's. Sounds like an italian version of
a song that should be on Genesis "Trick of the Tale"
a year or two before that album was released.
Brilliant lyrics!

PFM - "Per un amico"

Posted By: silvertree

Voted for Campo Di Marte just because it didn't have any votes yet. All are great albums.

I must say I very much prefer the songs that are sung in the native language even if I don't understand the lyrics. I try to make an effort to translate sometimes but the music (including the vocals) is enough for me.

I hate it when non-English speaking bands sing in English... we all know it is for commercial reasons.  This is progressive rock not the pop-business world !
