SB's "Carie" from Snow is awfully pretty.
Marillion consider "Easter" to be a love song dedicated to the people of Ireland. The song that really turned my head when I first heard it. I'm also a big Al Jarreau fan (KC drummer Pat Mastelotto even performed on his High Crime CD), and he's known for some beautiful songs. "After All", "Teach Me Tonight", "We're In This Love Together"...just gorgeous songs. I also enjoy Toto's "I'll Be Over You" and "I Can't Hold You Back". E -------------

I have to agree, not what your mind would first turn to when thinking of a love song, and certainly not carrying the cliché associated with them, but the album really is beautiful and simply amazing. Have to mention "Second Love" and "This Heart Of Mine" as the more traditional love songs on the album.

I think most great love songs are to be found outside prog. I don't mean slushy AOR ballads, of course (I hate them with a passion) - for this girl, the best love songs belong to classic hard rock bands. Some examples? Deep Purple - Mistreated, Soldier of Fortune Rainbow - Rainbow Eyes Gary Moore - Empty Rooms, Still Got the Blues Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You Gillan - For Your Dreams They're all quite sad songs, but I don't really like the happy ones too much...that with being terminally unlucky in love! |

Hmmm, well I'm not into love songs really, so my list is mainly depressing stuff! Van der Graaf Generator - Lost Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World (I class this as a love song, of sorts) Gov't Mule - Beautifully Broken And one slightly cheerful one, but not because it's an amazing tune as such, but because it holds a lot of memories for me: Guns n' Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine (my best friend's favourite love song, she loves it and we always dance to it, it's our song). -------------

Alright, for the prog purists I'll mention some prog love songs I remember:
Wondering aloud - Jethro Tull
VDGG - Lost
Yes - Sweetness
Requiem - Jethro Tull
There are a lot more corny songs but I don't remember well. But again, I got the feeling that prog is too cold to talk about love the way other genres do, and this is IMHO.

The greatest prog love song (besides Script by Marillion or a good portion or MC by Marillion) is Turn of the Century by Yes. Well not the greatest or the best, but it is beautiful. The best is Lady Fantasy by Camel.

Script... a love song? It's one of the most depressing pieces I've heard (although there is an undertone of unrequited love, but it's far too late for him to get love back). As for MC, besides Lavender, I wouldn't really call any song on it a love song (and Kayleigh isn't really a love song if you look at it). -------------

I'd second (or third, or fourth ) almost every song mentioned from the "golden era". yet, among these, Lady Fantasy stands out as my fave (despite being a suite rather than a song...)
Non prog: the first thing that came to my mind is "I don't know how to love him" from Jesus Christ Superstar. Also Gethsemane is another good love song (it indeed is! check out the philosophy behind it
 ) from this album.
if there's anyone who thinks there might not be love songs in prog, I'd recommend Peter Hammill's album with the same name !------------- Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!) |

Script is most certainly a love song. It's actually about having a broken heart from his love leaving him for another man and then she gets married. It's about true love meaning that you want them to be happy more than you ("so I hold my peace forever, when you wear your bridal gown"). Lavender is a children's love song. The "Lavender's blue, dilly dilly" is taken from an old children's love song (well, sort of love). The song demonstrates the innocence of the love of children. Also, Kayleigh is definitely a love song. The song is about realizing how much he loved his girlfriend(s) after they leave him (or he leaves them). -------------
