Talking about positive. I Just saw Zappa play Zappa. You can't get more positive than that except I hate the venue I saw it in the House of Blues. That venue is not made for a prog rock show which what we had was the highest degree of prog. There were a thousand people crammed into this joint tonight a quarter of which could not see the stage the lower half getting a terrible mix. You couldn't breathe. Thanks corporate music business.
The show? Beyond expectations. Wait for the DVD that is sure to come. God if we could have that crowd at every show. The music was unbelivelable the musicians were exceptional. I wish I had every name and song but I am a bit tired but it was pretty musch the same as what has already been poted. If anyone reading this can go to the LA gig or SF gig do yourself a favor and do so. If I had it all over I would see Carl Palmer tonight (Thursday) in LA and then seen this show in LA tomorrow at a bigger venue. Would have been worth the extra miles driven.
It was played flawlessly by a great band led by Franks son Deewzle. The band also fronted sax/flute/vocalist Napoleon Murphy-Brock who played with The Mothers of Invention for about 5 years in the 70's. Joe Travers on Drums, Pete Griffin on Bass, Aaron Arntz on Keyboards& Vocals, Scheila Gonzales on Horns, Keyboards & Vocals, Billy Hulting on Melodic Percussion and Jamie Kime on Rhythm Guitar. While they all were outstanding playing this kind of music special kudos to Scheila Gonzales who played just about everything had an amazing sax solo and she stood all of about 5'4" tall. The amazing thing about the core band with the exception of Joe Travers and Murphy Brock and Zappa the whole band was under 30. Steve Vai also made a guest appearance playing guitar on Peaches Enregalia, Montana and Village of the Sun. Terry Bozzio was supposed to guest on drums and vocals but had a torn muscle in his arm so the drums were out. But he did take the stage over for the vocals on I'm so Cute through Punky Whips. Had a great time and if you didn't see it I am sure there will be a DVD. All in all it was just great to hear this music being played live again. hope they do this again.
