The greatest group of the last 25 years pre-poll survey

I got the idea for this poll while reading the U2 thread on these boards. I was actually stunned by micky’s comment that U2 was, in his opinion, the greatest group of the last 25 years. Has the last quarter of century been indeed so bleak? But then, after thinking about it for a while and looking at some charts I decided that he was, unfortunately, right. But that’s "out there", a popular opinion. Let’s see what the prog heads on this forum think about that.

Please submit up to 10 names of your candidates for the poll. You are more than welcome to start a discussion on the subject or to elaborate on the candidates to advance your point. I am yet to decide how many groups there should be in the poll, and you can make your suggestions of course, but I don’t think that the number should exceed 10-12. We’ll see as the names start coming in…

So, the greatest GROUP (not an individual artist), in any genre of music, based on its achievements and impact since 1980.

Well, I'll go first: U2, Metallica, Nirvana, Radiohead, REM, Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones...

Well, I know this forum is a bunch of New Wave haters, but I have to mention one of my favorite bands ever, Oingo Boingo, which catapulted Danny Elfman into the absurdly rich, highly in demand film composer he is today.

OK, let see if it makes the list.

And I myself would like to add Faith No More...

Wouldn't the bands have to have been started last 25 years for it to count? Or at least star recording albums after  That would exclude King Crimson and Rush. Not that there's anything wrong with them.

Anyone I would nominate has already been mentioned.

No, Ghandi 2, they only need to be active after 1980, and only their achievements after that year will count. Otherwise we'd have to trace every groups history, and if they started, god forbids, in 1979, what, dismiss them?

Also, although your favorite groups may have already been named here, it doesn't guarantee that they will make the cut, unless they get enough votes.

The number of entries in the poll will be limited, keep in mind!

I thought about that. I took KC off my list for that reason. But Rush, unlike KC, achieved the greatest success post 1980, which IMO qualifies them.

10-12 was the number of entries in the poll that I'm still trying to decide on. But your submissions definitely make that decision much easier! Wink

Argh. I was whittling hard anyway. There's just so much great music from the last 25 years that I don't understand people who don't find something more interesting than U2 to praise...

Alright, cut Portishead (which I listed because they pretty much single-handedly created a completely new genre) and Aztec Camera (whose second Mark Knopfler-produced album is weak).

Damn, I didn't get Prince in there! Oh, well...

OK, Teaflax, Portishead and Aztec Camera are out. But that still leaves 11.

I agree with U on U2 (heh). Not only can't I stand them, but also have a dilemma with that group right now. The thing is that I threw U2 in, along with a few other names, just to start this thread, but now have to count some of them as my personal favorites. LOL

Argh. Revised:

Squarepusher
Momus
XTC
Talk Talk
The Smiths
Faith No More
Japan
Metallica
Prefab Sprout (how I forgot them on the first list, I just do not know)
The Divine Comedy

That's ten.

Thing is, I could easily reel of one hundred bands from the last 25 years who have produced at least one five-star album.
