Yes, another "voice" thread from somebody who unfortunately can't play, but who still loves to sing and to hear great singing. I remember there was another such thread last year, when I joined the forum, but it died very early (I don't know why, but interesting threads seem to last much shorter than band-bashing ones ).
I love instrumental music as well, but a great vocal performance can really touch me, move me and stick firmly in my memory. In prog there are a lot of outstanding vocalists, even though sometimes the best performances can come from people who are not blessed with the traditional "beautiful voice", but who can really express a wide range of feelings through their singing. As I said in another thread, I love a variety of vocal styles, and my favourite vocal performances range from dramatic, heavy rock tour de forces (or is that tours de force?) like Ronnie James Dio's in "Stargazer" to the witty, understated singing of Richard Sinclair in "Share It".
Now, what are your favourite vocal performances - and, most important, WHY do you like them?

Gentle Giant's On Reflection - the vocal polyphony simply is as good as they come. A masterpiece of rock singing, although the style is originally not rock music.

You should listen to Pain of Salvation, this vocalist has one of the most expressive voices I've ever heard, it's amazing, all of their albums show a wide range of feelings. The Mars Volta vocalist also expresses a lot through his singing, although it's mostly the same odd feeling he conjures he's still amazing. Opeth is good too, lots of expression in this guy's voice, as well as Maynard from TOOL. I happen to like Zack de la Rocha a lot too, he used to sing in Rage against the machine, his singing was incendiary, so much rage, this kind of stuff can move the masses.

Peter Gabriel - 'The Musical Box' from 'Genesis Live', emotive and sensible vocal performance.
Chris Farlowe - 'Rope Ladder To The Moon' from 'Colosseum Live' unique, powerful bravura interpretation.

Stargazer
Great ones like Gentle Giant and Pain of Salvation have been already mentioned.
If expressive vocalist are discussed Peter Hammill can't be missed.
Queen had also some great vocal performances like The Prophet's Song.

I really like Chris Farlowe's performance on Three Score and Ten by Colosseum - some might find it corny but I think it's empassioned and dramatic.
I agree with Ghost Rider about Stargazer and, talking of Rainbow, Graham Bonnet gives a incredibly powerful performance on Danger Zone.

I was really into metal music in the past so there are a lot of performers I adore and a lot of really amazing performances to point out, but for now I think there is just one song that I think everyone should have heard, because of the amazing vocal performance.
It's In the Woods - Mourning the Deaath of Aase by Synne Larsen. This song is in the album "Three Times Seven on a Pilgrimage", just to avoid any mix-up, because another, quite different version of the same song is in the album "Heart of the Ages"

"The Wall", "Reason To Be", "Carry On Wayward Son" by Steve Walsh
Actually, classic Walsh just brings back memories of my childhood. The man sounded great on anything. He just had a fantastic range, a power, but (a the risk of sounding fruity) a sweetness to it. The man could really rock out, but pull in the reins on a tender ballad.
"Surrounded" by James LaBrie of Dream Theater
I seem to always hit the 'repeat' button on this one. To me, it's all LaBrie. His voice does remind me of 80's metal at times, but the guy can flat out sing. He just really stands out on this one.
Now, the Steve Hogarth section:
Yes, I know he's not popular amongst the Marillion purists, and I know he's lambasted at times; however, I experience several 'goos flesh' moments throughout his career with Marillion.
"Easter"- Probably one of Marillion's greatest songs. And brilliant musicianship aside, Hogarth delivers pure emotion. Especially on the last section.
"Cover My Eyes (Pain And Heaven)"- OK, it's pop, but I really enjoy listening to Hogarth on this one. Great range and steady from start to finish.
"The Great Escape"- Hogarth is just all over the place on this one. One moment subdued, the next manic and angry, and lastly soaring highly. Just a great song.
"Afraid Of Sunlight", "Beyond You", "Beautiful"- I picked the more tender songs from Afraid Of Sunlight because these songs just shows a different side of Hogarth. The songs just ache, but are so beautiful. I love emotional vocalists, and the vocals here are so effective that you can share the pain along with him. "Beautiful" isn't so much a painful song, but still a plea for help and still wrought with angst.
"Fantastic Place", "You're Gone" - Pretty much for the exact same reasons as the Afraid Of Sunlight bunch. H has lost something off of his voice, but still very emotional. He begins "Fanstastic Place" a little bit down and almost sounds as if he's bored; however, he really takes it to another world. Probably one of his better vocals from their more recent albums.

Peter Hammill on The Emperor in His War-Room - the "Ghosts betray you! Ghosts betray you in the night! They steal your eye from its socket!" part is chilling and unforgettable - I doubt there's another singer alive who can do that song justice.
Also, Dagmar Krause's singing on Living in the Heart of the Beast is especially astonishing. I understand she's an acquired taste but I can't understand why!

I`ve always liked Thijs van Leer`s qiurky vocals. Probably one of the
few prog artists with formal voice training. On the other end of the
spectrum Mani Nuemeier from Guru Guru has some real wacked out vocals.
Examples : Dagobert Duck`s 100th Birthday, Atom olch, Der Elektrolurch,
Moroso (live ), Ooga Booga, Samantha`s Rabbit, Walking Eating My Hotdog

I sort of agree, but I also appreciate how they didn't over use her, even when she played a more significant role, it is not as if Amon Duul II's albums revolved around her. She was just nicely placed into the mix.
I am interested in hearing her with the few albums she did with Popol Vuh. Anyone feel like commenting on that.

Echolyn: on quite a lot of their compositions such as One voice, As the world,A cautious repose and many others. Ray Weston is one of the best vocalists i know with his clear and powerful voice, Brett Kull is also quite good.
TFK: I'm the sun, Eyes of the world, King's Prayer and also many others. Quite a few of them on Paradox Hotel. Hasse and Roine are really good at singing harmonies. Roine Stolt is also very good at singing quiet songs or passages with much feeling. He sometimes falls somewhat short if he has to sing a chorus alone, Hasse Froberg is very important here.
Spocks Beard and Neal Morse. Neal morse has a very good voice,SB harmonies are usually great especially on the Beware of darkness.

A masterpiece of vocal (and instrumental) polyphony and contrapuntal techniques. I think that GG moulded the style into Rock very well.
Great choice

Another great choice - that song alone justifies Queen's existence in the archives. There are few Prog bands that can touch it for vocals and use of tape loops.
My favourite vocal performance has got to be that on "First Utterance" by Comus - possibly closely followed by Necronomicon on "Tips Zum Selbstmord" - purely for the diverse ranges of vocal effects used, not because of advanced techniques or anything.
I prefer the "natural" over the academic

Matt Bellamy sings the whole thing in falsetto. He gives so much in that recording. His shrieks make you want to pull your hair out, and dance around with joy at the same time. 'Turn of a Century' - Yes. Andersons voice is crystal clear, and his tuning perfect. He conveys the emotional story in the song perfectly.
'And dream of sleep' - Kate Bush. Haunting and lonely, and the perfect intro to 'The Ninth Wave'
'New Horizons' - Moody Blues. Haywards pristine voice brings this simple but deeply personal sounding ballad, to life.
'Ashes are Burning' - Renaissance. Annie Haslam. Need I say more?
'Chamber of 32 Doors' - Genesis. This song is rarely discussed, so I think Gabriels very heart felt performance deserves a mention. After the cold anger of 'Back in NYC', and the comedy of 'Counting out Time' 'CO32D' returns us to the mystery and melancholy that underpins the Lamb. Gabriels vocals on this song are a big part of that.

If you mean the recording with Ian Gillan and Murray Head, that was never staged in that form. It was the concept recording, done in London - after that it was staged in the West End (with few if any of the performers on the album). The first US performance was in fact as a High School play. Only then did it go to Broadway with Ben Vereen playing Judas
I was referring to the Discs they put into stores, as i have never seen it live i could not tell you how simeler the vocals sound. But refrencing the CD, many of the performances sound very simmeler, judas as well as jesus and peter. Very informative thogh... had no clue
EDIT: what changed besides the cast? i have seen part of the play done on television, although that obviously must be somewhat different from the "Broadway" show, and it did not seem to be changed at all, at least in terms of songs, order, and structure.

The readily available versions I think are the original concept
recording (Gillan, Head etc.) and the movie soundtrack from the
mid-70's, where they fiddled with the arrangements and - in my opinion
- stripped some of its power out. As far as I know, there should be a
Broadway Cast Recording, but I have never seen one. And then I saw a
West End version on TV from the late 90's (?) with Rik Mayall as King
Herod, I believe.
Just did a quick Amazon check, and there's actually quite a few
different versions out there; 69 original, 71 Broadway, 74 movie, 89
London Cast, 96 London Cast, 98 London Cast (with Rik Mayall).
I nitpick on this because many, many people call the original
Gillan/Head album "the original Broadway recording" (including the guy
who sold me the CD version a few years ago), when it is not.

I agree with BLACKSWORD who has reminded me of Gabriels outstanding vocals on 'Chamber of 32 Doors' . 'Lamia' also carries on that wonderful mood .
I like Kerry Minnears gentler [no pun intended] vocal style in songs like 'Aspirations' where he seems to have carried on the mood shared with Phil Shulman in the earlier GG material [e.g. 'Black Cat' and 'Funny Ways' with Derek].
But I never realised what a great singer Ronnie James Dio was until I heard his work as Froggie on ROGER GLOVER'S 'BUTTERFLY BALL' back in 74.. His vocals on his 3 songs 'Sitting in a Dream ', 'Homeward' and the title song are just wonderful . In fact the whole work is very strong vocally [with others featured including David Coverdale, Eddie Hardin, Glenn Hughes, Helen Chappelle ,John Goodison , Liza Strike , Mickey Lee Soule and Jimmy Helms to name a few]. RJD is EXCELLENT however. The album is well worth a listen despite its commerciality in parts and there's a page dedicated to it on ROGER GLOVER'S web site.
AND some of you may recall EDDIE JOBSON's amazing little violin solo on the title track!

Before someone quite rightly picks me up on it , there is no title track as such for the BUTTERFLY BALL. RJD and EJ were in fact featured on the single which was released at the time called 'LOVE IS ALL'.
I've just finished reading Roger Glover's comments about the production of the Royal Albert Hall concert which has recently been released on DVD. He remains very disappointed about all aspects of the production except for the work of the musicians and vocalists and the wonderful late Vincent Price. Interesting reading!
------------- Looking still the same after all these years...

Somehow missed this but as it's about my favourite thing, singing, then I have to go for the sheer emotion of ' Soon' and the crystal clear clarity of 'Turn of the Century' but for vocal dexterity and brilliance it is ' Still Life' and I also have to add ' Rain' by Uriah Heep;Byron's vocals are just amazing.
