A lot of my favorite music is Canterbury.

I think all these albums are wonderful except for Gilgamesh. Because I haven't heard it yet. Some great ones are left out, I know. But I think all the classics of the genre is included. Fans of late Soft Machine and Gong will have to forgive me. As well as fans of Kevin Ayers, sorry not enough poll choices.

My vote goes to Wyatt's 'Rock Bottom'. Its one of my favorite albums of any genre. The last three songs that go together is the most painfully beautiful 18 minutes of music I know. I love Cucooland and Shleep but I chose not to include albums from after 1980.

Maybe three Supersister albums is one too many, but I love them all.

I just discovered National Health, what a fantastic band and Amanda Parsons voice on the debut is just perfect.

Enough of that. What is your favorite (and why)? Tell us:

My personal favorite would be either Third by Soft Machine or Angel's Egg by Gong.

Lots of great albums there... Anyway, I voted for perhaps the most obvious, Caravan's "In the Land of Grey and Pink". Other favourites are Caravan's second (the title is way too long!) and, of course, both Hatfield and the North's albums, especially the wonderful "The Rotters' Club".

As to "Rock Bottom", I recently bought it and did not regret the purchase for one moment. It's not easy to get into, nor is it always comfortable listening, but it's really beautiful and moving. My favourite is the opening "Sea Song".

Seems like In the Land of Grey and Pink is the most popular. No votes for 'You' yet, my second favorite in the poll.

As we seem to have a lot of the same favorites Ghost Rider, I can more of less guarantee that it will 'click', and you'll
start loving the whole Rock Bottom album even more. There is also a lot of humour and playfulness within all that misery and madness. As always with Robert Wyatt. Only one guitar solo has ever made me cry, Mike Oldfields soaring solo right after Wyatt has sung the 'In the garden of England...' part on the last song. Such beauty.

Picchio dal Pozzo is not a Canterbury album! A tribute to Robert Wyatt on the back cover dont make it Canterbury. Although their are some influences from Wyatt or Soft Machine, the music is much closer to French Progressive Electronic than anything that Canterbury produced. Actually Rock Bottom has more to do with Continental progressive than Canterbury. Supersister also, I hear influences from England and the Continent, not a CACKLEBURY BAND!!!

Seems like some Greek and Polish band make a reference to Jim Morrison from the Doors, that does not make their music american psychedelic blues rock!

I had my doubts, but when I saw Picchio Dal Pozzo and Supersister had albums among the essential Canterbury albums in the archives, I decided to include both. I don't think of it as absurd, like you seem to.

I wouldn't have put them in the poll if they weren't categorized Canterbury here, so you really have to blame the archives.

There's a lot of bands in Norway that think they are playing Americana. I guess they are all wrong.

Panzerpappa (from Norway) sounds to me like a mix between Canterbury and Samla Mammas Manna. Is that impossible?

CARAVAN has always been one of my favourite bands and at different times since the 70s I've listened to and enjoyed most of the bands and albums listed . But the album which has really endured for me and stood the test of time  is 'ROTTERS CLUB' . FINE musicianship , composition and  humour combine to create the best for me-- not to mention the 'Northettes'!

For now I'll go with the majority, In the Land of Grey and Pink.

Torn between the first two National Health albums.  But really, you can't go wrong with anything Canterbury.  It is now my favorite genre by a mile.

National Health Of Queues got my vote but it really could have been any of National Health, Hatfield, Gong, Hillage, Egg or Caravan. They've all been fav's at one time or another.

It is a very enjoyable album, and it was my introduction to Canterbury Scene music.  Hatfield and the North followed Caravan (unless one counts Camel).  I'm curious to know what the other three albums you've heard from the list are.

When I started collecting  Soft Machine Volume 2 was the only Canterbury album available in the UK from a UK label/distributor, followed by the undistinguished eponymous Caravan album if you could find it  - If I could Do It Again I'll Do It All Over You was a quantum jump for the band. Frustratingly Soft Machine's eponymous first album was only available as a US import into the UK.

From a more objective point of view: either Caravan's In The Land Of Grey An Pink or Hatfield's Rotters' Club. Caravan's album is the first Canterbury masterpiece IMHO, but Hatfield perfected the Canterbury sound and arguably they made the ultimate Canterbury - album.

Butbutbut... my favourite album is... Of Queues And Cures by National Health.

Rotters club and In the land of the grey and pink are classic remasters. Some of the bonus tracks are great. I don't care for Gong. I have Flying teapot and Angels egg and I thought they were pretty weak compared to most 70s prog

I wouldn't even know how to choose a "best", to be honest.  Ends up being a lot of apples v. oranges comparisons.

And so my friends, CARAVAN is once more confirmed as the most overrated Canterbury band ever, and SUPERSISTER as the most underrated band in both canterbury and general prog terms.

... and where is matching Mole's second album?

           Kind regards.

I hadn't heard Matching Mole second in 2006, Cesar. I guess I prefer it to their debut now that I have. Rock Bottom is still my favorite. I would have made place for Cos (one of my favorite bands, for the two last years) and Moving Gelatine Plates as well.
