Can someone give me a recommendation for ProgRock bands that use strings (violins and cellos) extensively in their music, other than Curved Air and Esperanto? Thanx for the contribution to expanding my ProgHorizons!

Apart from King Crimson with David Cross, I would mention the fantastic High Tide, with Simon House's trademark electric violin. Both their albums, "Sea Shanties" and "High Tide", are highly recommended.

Quella Vecchia Locanda has very wild and beautiful violin. Mahavishnu uses too. And of course the post-rock bands from Canada like Godspeed (GYBE!).

Lots of post-rock bands make great use of strings. Godspeed You Black
Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Sigur Ros are some of the best examples.

Bond.
They arent really prog, but they are HOT
Its a female sting quartet that does like electronica mixed with classical. but they are quite attractive

Van der Graaf's The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome is strings driven, but you'll need to like Hammill's guitar playing as well (not everyone does). If you like this, check out Hammill solo (he has a lot of albums with Stuart Gordon on violin).
Don't know any other off the top of my head.

I highly reccomend "Godspeed You Black Emporer" for some emotional progressive music that heavily utilizes stringed instruments. They use no keyboards and instead have multiple stringed instruments to add depth to their playing.

I'm starting to question your thought process if you listen to music for how they look.... It's ok as long as thats not the only reason you listen to them. It's hilarious how on guitar tab sites any mention of Evanescance *not really my cup o tea* turns into a 30 post conversation on how hot she is. Yay sexist america!!

On the RIO/Avant prog scene you could try Art Zoyd or Sotos, who both use strings extensively. Fred Frith (Henry Cow/Art Bears/Skelton Crew) is an accomplished violinist as well as guitarist, bassist, pianist etc. and Hopes and Fears by Art Bears and the first Skeleton Crew album both feature quite a lot of strings.

There´s a lot of bands that used strings as a sound sampler on Mellotron...
Too many to mention, but try to catch Sandrose (France) or Spring (UK)

Try "Once Again" by Barclay James Harvest, great use of orchestra. I don't know how much they used on their other albums though.

String Driven Thing spring immediately to mind! Their album 'The Machine That Cried' is very akin to Curved Air imo, only a bit less keyboard driven.
As for BJH, I'd say only their first album heavily relies upon orchestration, with pretty much every track (bar the below par 'Good Love Child') having some orchestra in there somewhere. 'Once Again', 'BJH and Other Short Stories' and 'Baby James Harvest' have some orchestra on a few tracks too.

Ahh... They are emotional indeed. I remember I nearly cried when I first heard 'Storm'.. There is a lot of emotion there, as well as strings.
I second :)
