you limit yourself on how often you listen to it, because you fear that you may overplay it and it will lose its appeal, or wont be as fantastic, or maybe you may become bored with it.  But you like it so much, that you are worried this may happen, so you hold off on it.

i can only think of a few albums at the moment, and here they are

Grobbschnitt - Rockpommel's Land

Yes - Relayer (Gates of Delirium is my favorite song, and i plan on keeping it fresh)

Camel - The Snowgoose, i have only recently started holding off, I have probably played this cd the most out of all my albums

oh, and why not, hows about albums that you thought were incredible but you played them so often that you lost interest.  I have a few of those, like

Strawbs - Grave New World

Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Eart

ELP - most of their albums

i'll add more later

Aaron

I know what you mean but I can't think of any. I do have a lot which I know so intimately that I seldom play them.

This happened to me a couple of years ago with Mostly Autumn's Passengers - I played it over and over virtually to the exclusion of all else for months, but then the fire went out and now I wonder what I saw in it.

Same for me for those 2 albums. Do you know Solar music live from Grobschnitt?  Quite different
from Rock Pommel's land (more floydian and spacy) but also outstanding.

I know what you mean...I think that a bit about Close to the Edge...I don't play it that often but when I do, it gets blsted 5 or 6 times in a row! One non-prog track I did tire of through over playing was "Stairway to Heaven" - it's lost its appeal for me now.

The Wall has always been my all-time favourite album but I have overplayed it so much along my lifetime that nowadays I play it less than once a year.

Fragile has been overplayed in my household since early 1972.  A Passion Play comes in a close second only because it came out a year or so later.

Well, this is pretty familiar!
I have had this with the Dream Theater albums. In a couple of months I bought all DT-cd's, and these days I notice I don't play them that much anymore. The fact that my collection is rapidly expanding will also be a factor here.

The last couple of weeks I have this with my Opeth cd's. Just when I thought: ok, enough's enough, let's cut down on the opeth, a good friend of mine discovered them, and is constantly playing their music. Which on the other hand is a good thing, as I'll be seeing them live in about 2 months, and ofcourse I want to know every song the could play that evening

Script for a Jester's Tear by MARILLION.Yeah,it's my favouritest album EVER,but I listen to it very seldom - I'm afraid it can lose its magic with frequent listenings!!!

'Close to the Edge' by Yes, 'Animals' by Pink Floyd, 'Foxtrot' by Genesis and ELP's first album all have that appeal for me.

I can no longer listen to 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'The Wall' or anything by Led Zeppelin or the Beatles since I played those bands to death when I was growing up.

Currently for me it's the live version of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from Archives I.  I'm trying my best not to listen to it once a week but I keep reaching for it all the time even though I got it in January.  It's so good it's like I've never heard it before.

I`ll never tire of listening to anything by Gentle Giant. The only thing that worries me is that everything they ever recorded might eventually be released. I just bought Scraping the Barrel about two weeks back and still haven`t made it through all 12 hours of it.

I find that despite the fact that my music collection is expanding at a ridiculous rate I still go back to several albums on a regular basis, but I also don't listen to several albums that I really enjoy because I'm buying so many albums.

To be honest I don't know what to do; stop buying as many albums (I've bought 7 since Saturday) or to spend even more time listening to music. Its a major dilema.

A lot of Gov't Mule stuff, 'cause I have numerous live versions of songs I love and I don't want to overplay it all.

Most of my Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill collection, I don't ever want them to their appeal, I'd be devastated!

In some ways, I'm very glad Gov't Mule have released a lot of double albums and long live recordings, it means I don't tend to play them all that often, which is cool!

I'm listening to a 4CD concert of theirs as I type this though, eep!

That's 4:07:24 worth of music!

I also don't want to overplay Comus or White Willow - Storm Season.

I have Taal - Skymind in the car and I really think I should remove it, the same with Starless and Bible Black by KC, I play either of those all the time.  Pawn Hearts is in the car as well, but I always make sure I never play it.

No dilema. Keep buying. I have so many ( I`ve been collecting them since around`72 ) I don`t even know what might be lurking in my collection. It`s always nice to find something I haven`t heard in years.

Thats what I intend to do but I have two problems; I'm a student and as such don't have much money and I've only been in to Prog for a shortwhile so I've got a lot of catching up to do.

I have a few thousand cds but still can never find anything to play - I stand in front of my racks for ages trying to decide! It's a good point though, with all my choice are there any albums to be treated rather like the I Ching. You may say - "what the hell is he talking about?" Well, many years ago I had a friend who was into the I Ching and he used to keep it wrapped in silk and only bring it out on special occasions. Well, yes, I thought he was nuts too but you get the drift.

To return to the point (I can get a bit like Ronnie Corbett), I suppose it would have to be just my favourite album "Fandangos in Space" by Carmen. I have bought two copies, one of which was the American version - obtained recently from my usual bootleg supplier in St Petersburg, Russia. This has a different cover to the original vinyl and cd release. I will only take this one in the car - the other one doesn't leave the house in case the car got stolen. I do only listen to it every so often and that is partially due to not wanting to overplay it.

I have it with my favourite album of all time: Going For The One by Yes. Most albums I listen to any time when I'm in the mood, but GFTO... Only every now and then, indeed, to keep it fresh.

I do that too, stand in front of my CDs and ponder about what to play!  I have a lot of stuff to play and I think: I really want to play this, but I played that last week and the week before that... and what do I play?  Haha, the one album I've played on numerous occasions.  I don't dislike any of my music, but some great albums get left unplayed for ages!

I had to limit The Masquerade Overture by Pendragon. I still like it a lot, but I've played it so often I basically memorized the music, so I find I don't really need to play it much.

Caress of Steel by Rush - Its awesomeness and the memories it carries from my youth are sacrosanct.

A Flame to the Ground Beneath by Lost Horizon - It's so powerful that I believe there may be dilution by overplaying it.

After the initial onslaught of finding and listening to a favoriye album of all time I inevitibly put it aside to be played only once in awhile to keep the initial rush fresh in my mind when I do play it again.
eg. Yes; Close to the Edge and Gentle Giant; Free Hand, I've owned since they were released in the early 70's. Nowadays I've only have played them about once every two years but I know them so well they are still my favs .

Fragile is being played regularly, it's so catchy, I hope I never get tired of it even though I'm not limiting my access to it.

There are a few albums I have stopped so that I won't grow tired of them like,

Animals

Red Evil Smile

Moonmadness Wacko

Unfortunetly, I have already grown tired of Red . I have discovered alot more prog since I gave Animals a break, and I was very unimpressed with it when I came back to it after about a 6 month break. It just wasn't as sharp and fresh as I once remembered it.

Are there any albums for the rest of yall that have never lost their beauty even though you play them regularly? I hate to think that every album I love  will once be discarded  after a certain amount of plays.

I'm being very careful not to overplay Ghost Reveries.

I'm not playing The Snow Goose, The Last Bright Light, Runrig's Proterra or Argus at the moment, just to give some other stuff a chance.

In a few weeks I'll go back to them and will doubtless love them more than ever. The Tain and Book of Invasions by Horslips never get boring however much I play them, though, which is very often.

I'm currently trying to get into VDGG and King Crimson and failing completely, but Gentle Giant are improving with every listen to the point where they are now amongst my favourite bands.

Tiring of my favourite albums is not so much of a worry, however there are a special few that I will only listen to occasionally purely due to the fact that they demand 100% of my attention.

The first thing happened to me with Close to the Edge when I first bought it, but it turns out it has never grown old on me even though I broke my rule of only listening a couple of times a week or something geeky like that.

The second thing did happen to me a bunch of times though (I mean loosing interest in an album I thought was amazing at first). First it happened with Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory, then with Angra's Rebirth, then with In the Court of the Crimson King and a bunch of others. One funny thing that happened was that I lost interest in Brave by Marillion but then I regained interest in it and still love it.

When I grew up in the 70s I had a phase in which I nearly got mad listening to BJH, Supertramp, Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd ( yes, me... ) all the time and I needed some distance so I can develop my own style, so in the 80s I concentrated on anything else comin' along and making me feel good, I even bought albums because they had good reviews ( and some because they were chartbreakers and had quite interesting covers/titles ! ) and forced myself to NOT listen to "Prog" for a while. It worked... I developed my own style as a singer/songwriter and I don't copy anyone, but hey, what I'm doing IS NOT prog whilest since long I allowed myself to get back to anything I ever loved and listen to it as often as I like again...

I'm just thinkin'... is there REALLY an album I love but got enough of cause i played it too often ?

Well... there were times I didn't wanna hear any of Cat Stevens' familiar tunes but later on my love became even greater and I don't think that this example is what you asked for...( No prog ) but to let you know:

I DISLIKE "Dark Side of the Moon" and if there weren't "Money" on it i'd like to stamp it "Most overrated Prog-Album of all time"... but I never really liked it so that's something different, too ( SORRY to all PF-Fans... It's great to you, I know, please forgive me ! ).

In general it's just "phases" in which I've got enough of one album or artist I usually like, the longer the pause the greater the pleasure when it's over and I'm puttin' it on again !

Signals and A Farewell To Kings by Rush;

Animals, Obscured by Clouds, and Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd;

I know there are others, but none have come to mind yet...

Albums I've lost interest in: Aqualung by Jethro Tull is the only one that comes to mind right now, but there are probably others.

I have a few albums too which (I hope) I'll never get tired of:
Animals by Pink Floyd
Thick as a Brick and Minstrel in the Gallery by Jethro Tull
In the Court of the Crimson King and Lark's Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson

There are probably a few others, but these are my favorite bands.:)
