Although I love Genesis, Yes, KC, VdGG and many many other bands, PF was, is and will be my all-time favourite band (for their brilliant five albums - Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and The Wall). Nothing else really matters ;-)
------------- PF, Genesis, KC, Yes, VdGG, GG, Camel, Jethro Tull

A slight absence of Canterbury I fear...
Also, lack of KC, VDGG, GG makes poll invalid.

Hmm, strange list, The Beatles are the best band here but this is a strange mixture of prog, proto-prog, prog-related and God knows what.

For me it's Yes, They've got so many good albums, As do most prog giants, But Yes, For me, Are a small step up above the rest. I mean come on!
- The Yes Album
- Fragile
- Close to the Edge
- Tales From Topographic Oceans
- Relayer
To me that is a clear no questions asked run of masterpieces. 'Going for the One' comes very close also
But I can't very strongly disagree with those who say Genesis or Pink Floyd either, Prog gave us some massively great bands

My vote is for YES... I have to recognize that is a sentimental vote, because I didn't found many bands that deserves to belong to the list such as ELP, PORCUPINE TREE, PFM, CAMEL, WHITE WILLOW, SOLARIS, OSSANA, ANGE...

Also maybe i'm ignorent, but whats so good about Pink Floyd?

For me Genesis 1 ( slightly ahead of Yes because of the Lamb)
Yes 2 ( really admire them always staying true to prog but down a notch because of Tales)
Pink Floyd 3( great run from Atom Heart to Animals but found the later work nauseous)
Beatles 4
Jethro Tull 5
Mike Oldfield 6
ELP 7
Camel 8

Non-prog: Hendrix/Band of Gypsys, Be Bop Deluxe (c/b considered "prog", as in Art Rock), Derek & The Dominos, Zeppelin, The Who, Kinks, Beatles, Humble Pie,... (starting to sound familiar?)
Prog: FK, Spock's Beard, Echolyn, Transatlantic

In fact, for polls like this, the starter lists the bands HE likes most not the average ones or the best known or the most representatives...
Later, the starter simply follows the poll to check which individuals or how many people think like HIM.

Define the best... Criticly and popularity wise its obviusly the Beatles. You ask any music scholar and that would be their definite anwser. The Beatles music changed the world and still does forty years later, which is something that can not be said for most bands of the sixtys or the seventys(yes we are not the norm). With no feelings or bias involved, with a total objective veiw as a historian and speaker of truth The Beatles have no equal. Its just the facts and no one convince me away from the facts.
Without the Beatles there I pick two bands from two totaly different sides of prog that can not be compared to each other:
1.Renaissance
2.King Crimson

best band????....
Gentle Giant
what instrument could they not play, regardless of time or
tempo... and with those vocals...., so good I'd say.. they really had
no chance at big commercial success hahahah

I used to listen to Gentle Giant a lot and their talent is exceptional. I do have trouble getting into them though. The people I know that really like them are all pretty neurotic souls who love that kind of intricate playing. Incidently, most of those same people also get into Dream Theater in a big way. One complaint I have is in the production of their albums. Like so many bands of that period. It's to bad they did not hire the same people doing jazz productions back then. So much cleaner and better sounding. By the way, Steve Howe of YES thinks highly of Gentle Giant from what I here.

Pink Floyd because their emotion can range from peaceful(a pillow of winds) to hateful(One of my Turns)........relaxed(Breathe) to anxious(Sheep) and of course everything at once....ECHOES.
Rush, GG, VDGG, and King Crimson should def be mentioned in any best of prog poll.
ELP and genesis are also Incredible.
