I've never listened to anything from FRANK ZAPPA...but I am interested in "testing the water".

I am primarily a fan of stuff along the lines of YES, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, early MAHAVISHNU, ELP, UK (etc).

Anybody out there have one solid suggestion as a starting point for me (assuming THAT even exists, of course).

Oh... I suppose I should say that I'm not a fan of "goofy" material (since he apparently likes to be humorous on occasion).

     Thanks

Get it all!  (bring a platinum credit card with you)

Seriously though, I'd start with Hot Rats then as blazno says - start buying.

There's a sampler CD that reunites 19 tracks from 1967 to 1988 by FZ. It's called "Strictly Commercial: The Best of Frank Zappa". It's a good way to test if you like Zappa's style.
