I thought I would try to bring some order back to the forums by doing a poll that everyone can participate in. Lately these forums have been cluttered with absolute silliness where it is even becoming too vulgar for the likes of me. ( coming from me.,that's bad) Even the more respectable ones like Peter Rideout and James Lee have joined in the chaos....when in Rome, I guess...Even Ivan been cracking jokes!!

The other type of threads are the obscure: What do you think of Dificil Equilibrio? where only 5% of the forum can even answer that seriously!!

Well this isn't Rome and consider me the barbarians at the gate as I try to plunder this silliness and bring some seriousness back to the forums!! So I present the question above and for all you old-timers who'll whine:"This has already been done" let me just say "So What!"

It seems like I set this poll up with multiple vote options. Oops. Please do not cheat so we can get an accurate read...thanks.

My top 3 would be:

1) Genesis

2) King Crimson

3) ELP

Highest in terms of what?

Personally I couldn't rate Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull or Pink Floyd above each other unless there were strict criteria.

ELP tend to be a little "rough", hence they lose points. Rush tend to be stylistically similar (a very minor quibble - but one not shared by the other 4), and Yes bore the pants off me.

So the 4 I mentioned take top place

Yes will always be my altime favourite. i like the other bands presented as wel as others not presented in this poll, But no other band has ever had so much an influence on my way of listening to music as Yes did.

I always listen to Yes concentrated and focussed on the music, whereas other bands I often use as background, while reading, watching television, ironing, cooking, working, sleeping etc.

1. Gdub:I dislike only King Crimson and Jethro Tull from that list.

I'd seen Genesis,Yes,Elp,Pink Floyd +for example Led Zep,and Purple, before you were 10.Cool (In reply to your question in the previous poll)

Rush are my favourites so I stick up for them. I have stated in other posts that I dont believe that they have been a Prog band for a long time now. They have "evolved" into a Hard Rock band with Prog sensibilities.

I have always considered YES to be the quintissential Prog Band, so they would be the Prog band who I would rate highest. Paradoxically I believe that Rush, seen over their entire career, are head and shoulders better than any of the bands named in the list. This is because they are my favourite band hence that statement is not objective.

Pink Floyd,Yes,Genesis and Elp are superb. Thanks to this forum,I developed a liking for Porcupine Tree. I have just got hold of Lightbulb Sun,Signify and In Absentia .

2.Cert! you just imagined I put something negative here about you! Yes,you are going mad!Wink

3.Lets clear up this gay thing. The only chink in Greg's armour ( apart from being American LOL) is that he is gay. When I say "chink in his armour" I mean in terms of mickey-taking- nothing else. I always feel that people who jump in to protect "minorities" are very patronising and therefore IMO probably bigoted in some way themselves. For my part I will ridicule anybody for any reason at any given moment if a) I have nothing more more intelligent to say and b) if it makes me happy.Wink

If that offends OTHERS well tough! If it offends the person it is aimed at.............

My Favs are:

1. Rush
2. Genesis
3. Yes

Lately, I've been having a hard time deciding between Rush and Genesis for the number one spot. I'd say they are likely tied.

Quote The only chink in Greg's armour ( apart from being American ) is that he is gay.

He's gay? hmm.. I really never knew that. I thought you guys were just joking before. Hmm...your learn something new everyday.

Genesis

Top three;

1. King Crimson

2. Yes

3. Genesis

Sorry Floyd, there have to be some losers in this...

A couple of years ago Genesis would have been number two but my re-introduction to prog has let me see Yes in a whole new light.

Dear me... as I can't stand Rush or Genesis and enjoy only a select few recordings from ELP and Pink Floyd, perhaps I'm barely a prog fan at all? I've never quite understood how they continue to be hailed as masters when IMHO there's simply much better music out there from less well-known bands. Oh well. Of those listed I'd say my top three would be:

1. Jethro Tull

2. Yes

And to explain, Yes recorded many wonderful pieces, but I simply find myself listening to Tull more regularly. I'm not sure why that should be the case, but oh well... And finally:

3. King Crimson

But if Gentle Giant, Hatfield and the North or VDGG were included in this poll then it'd be a completely different matter. However, for whatever reason (probably just record sales), they've never been considered to be "1st tier" groups.

Interesting thought Trouserpress (great name BTW). Both GG and VDGG sit (almost) in a 'Prog, but not as we know it' sub-genre. Pawn Hearts was a real shock to the system when I first heard it and it took me ages to understand what they were doing but finally, I found a way in and was very much the better for it.

I can't choose (between Tull, Crimson, Floyd, Yes and Where's...), but I'll have to say Genesis and ELP are behind the other choices for me. I'd put Rush in the 2nd tier as well (I'm not quite as into them as I used to be) except that they've been getting a bit trashed around here lately so I'm sticking up for 'em. Beyond that, it's all apples and oranges as some days I want to be Frippin', some I want to be Starship Troopin', etc...

Seasons will pass you by...I get up, I get down...

Rush in those golden years of 75'-80 were almost untouchable in creativity (IMO) James but sadly (and rather inevitably it seems in the vast majority of artists) they 'aint all that now.

However, full kudos to you for sticking your hand up for a band that has seen better days...

Depends on which era you look at.

1970-1973 - ELP with Yes not far behind

1973-1980 - Genesis with Pink Floyd just behind

1980 onwards - Rush (don't rate their seventies stuff so highly, but love Power Windows and Counterparts)

I voted ELP as they are my favourite band although over the last 30 years I would say Rush deserve it for sheer staying power.
